Of the best picture category... the only one I've seen is Little Miss Sunshine. And although it is a cute movie, if that is the best I am no longer intrigued to see The Departed.
And Alan Arkin... for best supporting actor? So if you are an old porn loving, granddaughter exploiting, cussing grandpa that's oscar worthy?
Unreal. I know it was a surprise hit, but it's not THAT great of a film.

The Departed was fantastic. Probably not for everyone, but if you like Heat, I highly recommend it.

Me too.
What this list really made me realize is that it won't really mean anything to me for another year or so, until I've had time to watch more of them on DVD. By then it'll be too late to mean much, though, because I'll be wondering what are the movies on the 2007 list.
I agree with you that if little miss sunshine and Alan Arkin win, then the rest of the movies might not be as good as I was hoping. But Arkin in Little Miss Sunshine was very good. Was this Marky Mark's first nomination ever?

The Val Kilmer movie? That's like calling the Mavs Jason Terry's team.
It's the Pacino/DeNiro movie, and it's greatness.

Award shows give me me such terrible "tired head".
And especially these ones. They should base "best picture" awards on ticket sales.

After ragging on the Sunshine nominees... I would like to say that Abigail Breslin did a fantastic job.

I agree that they can be a little high minded at times, but using your criteria, the nominees for best picture would be:
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest
Cars
X-Men: The Last Stand
The Da Vinci Code
Night at the Museum
Not as bad as it could have been in other years, but still, c'mon.

Hey Im not saying those were the best pictures of the year (cars? seriously?), but its so damned subjective, and every year the list comes out, and we all go "WHAT?" "which movie?" "I didnt see half of these"
Clearly the average joe liked Pirates (myself included) better than "The Queen" and sales $'s are something no on can argue with. Where as you can say, "well if The Queen was such a good movie, why didnt more people go to see it???"
IMO there is no right way to say which is the best.

maybe if Terry's head was so big it interfered with cross-court passes between other players. Maybe it's more like calling the Cowboys TO's team. Kilmer's glare is so annoying to me sometimes that it casts shadows across everyone else.
Speaking of Val Kilmer and 2006 movies, did you know he was Moses in The Ten Commandments: The Musical. That'll have to go on my Netflix list. I can't believe it didn't get an Oscar nod.
Speaking of Val Kilmer and Heat, imdb says that the video game from the movie is in production.

First of all, nothing wrong with Cars....
Second, I agree there's no perfect way to determine it, but if you look back over the years, I think they've done a fairly decent job. Last year was bad, it was all very non-commercial movies that most people didn't see, myself included.
But I think that was more of an aberation. I'm interested in most of the movies nominated this year.

Cars is greatness...
Mater, tractor tipping, Frank, "ca-chicka"..... If you aren't annoyed by Chick Hicks something is wrong with you. After 2 minutes of him you watch just to see him get beat (and no, I am not giving away the ending). It was a great film.... now I want Pixar to work on an Incredibles sequel instead of the rat story...

The Departed was greatness.
But more like Donnie Brasco than Heat.

Agreed. The Departed is nothing like Heat. Both are good, but no where close to the same feel. Putting it simple, U2, if you like a movie w/ ALOT of testosterone, you will enjoy it. Even more if you are a Marky Mark fan.

Since Dreamgirls didn't get in Best Picture, I think it's going to be Babel or The Departed. I loved both of them...Babel is extremely well done, if you haven't seen in, & it's the kind of film you'd think would win. Departed, obviously also greatness, I thought Mark Wahlberg was extremely deserving on supporting actor.

I'm tired of Johnny Depp getting the short end of the stick. Pirates was the highest grossing movie in... forever? And it's mostly because of his amazing job with the roll. He deserves an oscar more than any actor who doesn't have one.
That being said..
The Departed should win best movie
and Will Smith should win best actor.

- Johnny Depp was not nearly as good in the 2nd Pirates as he was in the 1st one.
- I'm really upset that Dicaprio was nominated for "Blood Diamond" and not for "The Departed." His performance was the best part of the movie, though I am happy for Wahlberg, he was great as well.
-Sascha Baron Cohen was robbed. Also, 3 songs from Dreamgirls, and no Kazakhstan National Anthem? Come On!
-I've defended LMS several times, and don't feel the need to do so again, but it absolutely deserved a nomination for Best Picture, as did Arkin. Really, almost every one of the principal actors could have been nominated, and I would have been happy. I haven't seen "The Queen" or "Letters From Iwo Jima" (which I really am looking forward to
-Though I've yet to see it, I have heard nothing but universal praise for "United 93", and it probably should have gotten a nomination. However, I can understand why it wasn't. Greengrass got a nod, though, so that will have to suffice.

This is like the third straight year that I haven't seen ANY of the movies nominated for Best Picture. Weird.
All I car about is that Cars wins Best Animated Feature. That movie is greatness.

Whatcha bet they snub Scorsese again in the best director category. I hate the Oscars, Cher and Emenem both have one, but Scorsese doesn't? It's all Hollywood b.s. politics.

I agree on all these.
For a guy not accustomed to the Oscars i've seen Departed and I don't know i'm a little shocked at how much praise it recieved. I was expecting one of Scorcese's best and got a decent film. But how is Jack Nicholson not nominated but Mark Wahlberg is? Maybe i'm missing something but wasn't Mark Wahlberg in at max 4 scenes in the movie?
I thought both Will Smith and Forest Whitaker were great in their films as well as Ryan Gosling. I was a little shocked by Gosling because i've seen him in a couple of films to date and he didn't really "wow" me in anything he's been in but he seems to be a great actor. Half Nelson is a great film as well. Seems to me Eddie Murphy is the leading candidate for supporting actor. He has the hype and well the performance to win.

That is the beauty of Mark's part. It didn't take more than 4 or 5 scenes for him to completely steal the show. In the theatre I was watching in, the crowd was buzzing before the final scene.. everyone knew what was coming.

Ahhhh I don't know Mark's part seemed more like a cameo. I'll admit I didn't see the end coming. I sort of forgot about Mark's character but it did make sense because his character sort of disappeared until the end. You could sort of feel he was coming back at some point.

I agree. very cameoish.. but not to the same drum as Chuck Norris in Dodgeball. It was more defined. And he brought a great comedic relief and delivered it well.

i wish the oscars had an ensemble cast award. i always like seeing who wins those at the other awards shows. would probably be a close race with Little Miss Sunshine and The Departed. Maybe even Dreamgirls as a dark horse.

Just watched The Departed yesterday. When i watch movies, i try not to get caught up in individual performances, but Leo Decap was head and shoulders above everybody in that movie. The whole movie was greatness. And i agree with Dtown, even though Wahlberg is my 2nd or 3rd favorite actor, i think Jack should've got a nod before him.

I just watched The Departed also. Man that was a good movie. Maybe because I've seen it more recently, but I'd give it the nod over Little Miss Sunshine. I wouldn't give any of the others a chance, maybe because I haven't seen them.
I might've gone with Nicolson over MarkyMark, also as supporting actor. But what's the line between lead and support? BBL has another good idea with the ensemble award. Especially with so many ensemble movies out these days. Anyway, I really can't argue very strongly against MarkyMark on this one. He cussed a lot, and since he doesn't have breasts to show, I guess that should help.

I might be in the minority here (and by here, I mean on this forum) but I think The Departed is the best movie I've ever seen.. either that or Open Range.

Open Range is a sleeper. Robert Duvall's second to last encore performance as a rugged plains cowboy. There is no matching his performance in Lonesome Dove though. He has tried but no chance.
The problem with Open Range is Kevin Costner. He is one of the worst well paid actors today. Still relying on a role he played in Dances with Wolves, he still thinks that he can charm the audience with his deep cognitive acting style. You can only get away with that one or two times before audiences cringe at it. I feel like I am watching Forrest Gump when he acts...and he isn't trying to be like Forrest Gump which is the bad part about it.

That's one opinion.. I personally didn't care for Goodfellas (mainly because I don't like Joe Pesci) or any of the De Niro movies (mainly because I don't like Robert De Niro) but I guess I'd put The Last Waltz up there because I'm a huge fan of The Band..
