Default Basketball goal or hoop?

My friend and I were talking on AIM and he said he says basketball hoop and I say basketball goal. What do you call it, a hoop or a goal?

Umm...

It's not a goal. It's either a basket or a hoop.

Goal?? Are you serious??

I would bet that in at least the context of "the official rules" that it is a "goal"

edit...thats true. maybe it's a "basket" in the official rules.

but Im too lazy to look it up and about to go to lunch.

Both/either.

Depending on context.

When referring to the physical thing, I think "basketball goal" is pretty common, and for me the most common.

"Basket" is more metaphorical, more releated to the act of scoring, or the concept of scoring, but clearly very common.

"Hoop" is colloquial, but very common; more common as metaphorical reference, but similar to basket.

They're all correct.

They use to play with peach baskets or the "hoops" of the basket.

They're both acceptable,

Generally, if I were to have one in my backyard, I'd tell someone I had a basketball goal.

If someone is driving the lane, I'd say they're taking it to the hoop.

If someone is pushed to the baseline, they are too far underneath the basket.

It all works.

I've called it both, but figured "hoop" was the correct form.

I'm going to call it a "ring" now and see if my hubby challenges me on it! Hopefully, he hasn't heard that before, so I can whip out my bball genius and show him the NBA rule book. Flaco, you better not be setting me up here!

I always thought of the entire thing (pole, backboard, net, etc.) as the basketball goal. hoop to me is more of a slang term. ex: "let's go play some hoops" or I'm 'bout to hoop it up". (gosh I'm a nerd...)

I actually have never heard it called a goal, everyone I know calls it a basketball hoop and when a shot is made it's called a basket or bucket. When someone drives the lane I say he's taking it to the hole, basket, or hoop. I have never called it a goal, and haven't heard it called that before.

Yeah I'm with Nashty on this, that's why I was so surprised. You're close to my age though so maybe older people call it a goal

Haha yeah, that's probably it. Or maybe it's just a West Coast thing? Either way, to me, goals are for soccer.

Definetly a basketball hoop, no question.

As I said, and as Mary said, if you're referring to presence of a basket at someone's house or such, I call it a basketball goal, for the most part.

Although, if it's just the backboard sitting on a roof, I might just call it a hoop.
