Default Official 2011 Dallas Cowboys Off-Season Thread

We all know the ending to the season. 8-8. No playoffs.

Let's rewind a little bit and focus on the Jason Garrett era:

In the 2010 regular season, the Cowboys ranked 23rd in total defense (30th in total points given up). As a result, our genius front office proceeded to draft 3 offensive guys in the first 4 rounds. Tyron Smith in the 1st, Bruce Carter in the 2nd, Demarco Murray in the 3rd, and David Arkin in the 4th. Admittedly, Tyron Smith played extremely well his rookie year especially considering his age. His physical gifts/tools can potentially help him to become one of the greats IF he continues to work hard. Carter was drafted with the intentions of sitting out his entire first year (a la Sean Lee). Murray was drafted because of his value in the third round (which turned out to be a steal). And Arkin was drafted because we were letting go of Flozell, Leonard, and Gurode. I wasn't completely happy with the draft but whatever.

In the 2011 regular season, it was glaringly obvious that the secondary couldn't cover anybody. And part of that reason is because our front seven wasn't able to apply any pressure on opposing quarterbacks. We are currently slated to have the 14th overall pick. Because we haven't made any moves involving draft picks, this means the Cowboys will have the 14th, 46th, 78th, and 110th picks in the first four rounds barring any trades. I want to see who you guys think we should target.

My board - target players:
1st round
- Dre Kirkpatrick (CB from Alabama)
- Mark Baron (S from Alabama)
- Courtney Upshaw (OLB from Alabama)
- Quinton Coples (DE from North Carolina)
- Devon Still (DT from Penn State)

Also in my opinion, these are the guys on defense that play a significant role who need to go. I'm focusing this post on the defensive side of the ball because I feel like we basically skipped a year of drafting/acquiring/developing guys on defense so the front office should make a concerted effort to do so during this upcoming offseason.
- Terrence Newman
- Alan Ball
- Bradie James

I just wanted to dive deeper into our free agent situation:

Unrestricted free agents
Alan Ball - NO - He's going to want more money than he is worth.
Martellus Bennett - NO - The Marty B experiment is officially over.
Keith Brooking - NO - Just retire already.
Derrick Dockery - YES - re-sign for depth
Abram Elam - NO - He was acquired this year because he knew Rob Ryan's schemes but he has absolutely no range and we need a playmaker back there.
Montrae Holland - YES - re-sign for depth
Jon Kitna - NO - Time to move on.
Daniel Loper - YES - re-sign for depth
Mat McBriar - NO - When healthy there is no doubt he is a great punter, but I now consider him to be injury prone and he will be asking for too much from a punter.
Sammy Morris - YES - I love this guy's tenacity and how hard he finishes runs. On the older side but could be a good #3 behind Demarco and Felix.
Laurent Robinson - YES - Romo's go to guy in the red zone.
Anthony Spencer - NO - A great physical talent but he's going to garner a large contract from other teams. I will be very upset if we overpay him (Like Newman and Sensabaugh).
Frank Walker - YES - Not a starting caliber CB, but good ball skills and is very valuable with fragile Jenkins and Scandrick slated as our starting CBs for 2012.
Bradie James - No - God, no.

Restricted free agents
Kevin Ogletree - MAYBE - Miles, Dez, and Laurent are bonafide 1, 2, and 3 WR's for 2012. I would prefer a specialist as the #4 receiver (either a speedster or slow veteran, locker room guy)
Tony Fiammetta - YES, arguably could be one of the team's MVPs this year.
Chauncey Washington - NO

Exclusive rights free agents
Clifton Geathers - INSIGNFICANT - MAYBE - depth
Jermey Parnell - INSIGNIFICANT - MAYBE - depth
Jesse Holley - INSIGNIFICANT - probably keep him around for the whole fourth and long angle

I can't blame them for last year's draft. In the first round, Tyron Smith was the nice little gift that fell in their lap. They would have been crazy not to take him. In the second round they did go defense. (We'll see what Carter has to bring.) Murray looks to be an inspired choice in the third. The book is out on Arkin, but I hope you don't think that there was a defensive playmaker just sitting there for the taking.

Last year's draft, as I recall, was very light on defensive backfield players, at least where we were drafting. This year's draft seems to be better stocked.

I'll give you a name to watch out for in the 3rd round: the RB Turbin from Utah State. I'll take OL or pass rusher in the first, and then the other of those two, or DB, in the second.

Also, the teams Dallas will play in 2012 are set.

Other than the six games against Philly, New York and Washington.
Home: New Orleans, Tampa, Cleveland, Pittsburgh and Chicago.
Away: Atlanta, Carolina, Baltimore, Cincinnati and Seattle.

Not gonna be easy.

I was more upset about last year's draft because we won a meaningless week 17 game that could have given us the opportunity to draft Patrick Peterson. Tyron Smith was definitely a great choice at 9 though. Since Bruce Carter was a second rounder last year, he has to start in 2012 yes? OLB - Ware, ILB - Carter, ILB - Lee, OLB - let Spencer go, replace in FA or Draft.

Carter is definitely a starter next year, unless he just proves not up to it. That's three of the back four set, and really six of the front seven. (Someone might step up at DE, but I doubt it.) Draft a rusher opposite Ware, or get something out of Butler, and then upgrade the secondary. Please, please, please find a playmaking safety.

Remember the days of Darren Woodson and James Washington? Nostalgia...

Drive-By? Yes, yes, I do remember those days. I seem to recall Drive-By playing a big role in the Steelers Super Bowl win. Or maybe it was the second Buffalo game. My memory gets muddled.

Woodson is the one you would like to re-create with DNA. I just don't understand it. The TE position is blowing up these days, but nobody seems to turn out safeties.

I think tight end's an easier position to fill because it's about largely physical tools. That's why undersized power forwards like Gonzales, Gates and Now Graham can excel. IMO safety is the defensive equivalent to quarterback. Either you can read an offense (defense) in a split second or you can't. But can't just stick an athlete back there and expect him to make plays. We tried and failed with Awusu Ansa.

I agree with you wholeheartedly. But that still doesn't explain why college programs aren't turning them out. Safety has been a really weak class in the draft the last couple years. It's not like we are talking about fullback, which many teams don't have a lot of need for. Every defense has a need for safeties.

Re: safety position
I agree with both of you guys. This just puts more of an onus on being able to put more pressure on the opponent's QB. I mean, who are the great safeties in the entire league? You can probably count them on one hand, two hands but you'll be making reaches. They are similar to QB's--the fact that it is rare to find a good one. If you don't have a top 10 QB, you cover that up with a great offensive line, or great RBs, or great WR's, or a combination of all three. Thus, if you don't have a top 10 safety, you need great CBs, or great LBs, or great pressure up front.

They showed a statistic tonight depicting that Eli dropped back 100+ straight times against the Cowboys without being sacked. That's just embarrassing.

That's a good question, especially in light of the fact that most of the offenses in college football run passing based attacks. Could be what Alby said. On average there are a couple of really good quarterbacks that come out of college every year. Safety may not be far off from that number.

Of course this is not a perfect example since safeties don't typically regress like you see some quarterbacks do (Freeman and Sanchez come to mind). You would think there would be more dominant players.

So is there ANY chance that Garrett isn't back? Or at the very least is forced to hire a proven Offensive Coordinator?

a better question is, "Is there any chance JERRY isn't back?" Wish we could just fast forward the next few years, maybe the cowboys will be able to build a decent team. Of course Romo wont be around for a whole lot longer. He has what, 4 years left in him best case scenario? Time to start developing a good backup. But of course Jerry is in charge so this will be overlooked. Hey if Dallas manages to win a superbowl with Romo, maybe we can see McGee become head coach, right?

NOTE: this post just made a bigger positive contribution toward the Cowboys season than Terence Newman has...

If T-New were a bigger pile of crap, opposing tight ends and fullbacks wouldnt find it so easy to hurdle over him.

http://nfltraderumors.co/2012-nfl-free-agents/

Few gets I'd like to see the Boys go after:
-Laron Landry --- Injury prone, not sure if he'll be healthy especially with scary lingering achilles injury. May be a buy low kind of free agent. But if healthy, could immediately plug a gap in our secondary at the safety position.
-Michael Griffin --- He's infinitely better than Elam or Sensabaugh and one of those bums at a minimum needs to be replaced.
-Brandon Carr --- Nice young CB and good player. Could be had for a reasonable amount. A secondary of Scandrick, Jenkins, and Carr at CB would be serviceable at worst and pretty nice at best.

Would like to see the Boys go OLB, secondary depth, and G in the draft. Would be open to trying to get a nice edge rusher as well to help Ware and Ratliff a bit, but think with a better secondary, their effectiveness will improve.

I've given up on this franchise. They're still my team, I'll still watch their games, but I give up any hope or expectations. I have really no more emotions left for them.

Pretty interesting:
http://espn.go.com/blog/dallas/cowbo...takes-the-heat

For me: offense = Doug Free, coaches = Jason Garrett, defense = Terrence Newman, brass = GM Jerry Jones.

What do you guys think?

---

A pretty good read re: worst loss of the year (@ home against Giants or @ home against Lions):
http://espn.go.com/dallas/hot/?id=7419061

---

How do you guys feel about Dez?
http://espn.go.com/dallas/nfl/story/...year-offseason

Obviously, he has the talent and physical gifts to excel for a long time in this league, but does he have the heart/desire/workethic? Which "88" will he follow?
1. Nobody worked harder than Michael Irvin. Although, there was no secret with his off the field issues--he came to play every Sunday and his desire to win was contagious. You could tell that his will and relentlessness rubbed off on others on the team.
2. OTOH, I had to check Antonio Bryant's wikipedia to see what the latest was.
Check this out:
On March 10, 2010 Bryant signed a 4-year contract with the Cincinnati Bengals worth a reported $28 million, along with multiple incentives.
After the Bengals signing of WR Terrell Owens, Bryant gave up his number 81 for Owens, who has worn the number his entire career. In return for the number, Bryant requested Owens make a donation to his charity. About the number switch Bryant said: "I'm a realist," "I said, 'Hey, man, I'm not going to make no big spectacle about it. You've got a bigger legacy and a number than I do. I've been on several teams like you, but I've changed my number several times. You've had the same number."
"I don't need your money,'" Bryant said. "'All I want you to do is take care of one of my little league programs in Miami. Send them a small donation and we'll go from there.'" He wore jersey number 19 while attending the Cincinnati Bengals training camp in Georgetown, Kentucky where Chad Ochocinco, Terrell Owens, Andre Caldwell, Jordan Shipley, Dezmon Briscoe, Jerome Simpson, Matt Jones, and Bryant himself have been catching passes from quarterbacks Carson Palmer, J.T. O'Sullivan, Jordan Palmer. On August 29, 2010, it was announced that Antonio Bryant's contract was terminated by the Bengals, making him a free agent.

I'm slowly thinking Dez is falling closer to the bad "88". It seems like he is in desperate need of role models and leadership. With guys like Deion running as far as they can from him, I feel like he just has no one to look up to.

For me: offense = Doug Free, coaches = Jason Garrett, defense = Terrence Newman, brass = GM Jerry Jones.

What do you guys think?
I'm not ready to blame the entire offensive problem on Doug Free. He did alright, and will be moved to RT next year anyway. Thank you Tyron Smith. Dallas got much worse play from the Center position IMO. Remember all of those 'too hot to handle' snaps?

Secondary is entirely on GM Jones fault for being a crappy evaluator of talent/football players.

Give Dez another year before making too many rash statements. Though I think he only had 1 game this year with 90 yards or more. Thats pretty bad for ANY second WR. His off-the-field stuff is maddening, however.

I agree. I was just going off the bracket that was given. Our interior offensive line is pretty bad. And with the swap at LT RT next year, the outside should be fine. With that being said, I still think the focus should be on defense defense defense.

I am the biggest Dez fan around so I hope you are right. Going off your < 90 yard stat, don't forget he was WR#1 for a number of games this year as well.

Tim Tebow now has as many playoff wins as the Dallas Cowboys have had in the last 15 years...

Just a few facts about the Broncos/Steelers game:

Tebow threw for 316 yards (31.6 yards per completion)
Pitt's time of possession was 31:06
Big Ben's INT came on a 3rd and 16 play
Tebow's game winning target in OT, Demaryius Thomas, was born on Christmas.

Can't make this shit up. I hate Tebow so much.

I am rooting for Denver to win it all..........Odds are depressingly low, but man what a story.

New York..looking pretty good. Turning out to be interesting playoffs for sure. I dont see Denver getting past the Pats. Although Pats have the WORST pass defense in the league, so maybe Tebow can work some more magic.

I don't understand how anyone can hate Tebow. Even if they are atheists, I still don't understand hate for the guy. I am rooting for him big time.

You can't make it up, but you sure can pick and choose.

PITT'S time of possession, you say? Also, 31:06 doesn't sound like the optimal number, somehow.

significance of 316? if its a bible verse, then I would argue that literally every 3 digit number combination is also a bible verse..or just about.

The 3rd and 16 is "picking and choosing." But the other ones hardly are. All pretty significant parts of an NFL box score.

John 3:16, Tebow's favorite verse, and one that he has worn on his eye black during games before.
