Default Dallas Cowboys @ Phoenix Cardinals (10/12, 3:15PM CST)

(STATS LLC) -- The Dallas Cowboys entered the season as the favorites to win the NFC East, but it looks like they could get more competition than they anticipated in perhaps the league's toughest division.

Though the Arizona Cardinals didn't come into 2008 with such lofty expectations, they've emerged as a leading contender in the weaker NFC West.

In a matchup between the conference's two highest-scoring teams, the Cowboys look to make a move in the loaded East standings on Sunday when they visit the Cardinals, who hope to protect their hold on first place in the West.

Dallas returned enough of its core from last year's division-winning team to enter 2008 as a prime candidate to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl. The Cowboys (4-1) are still on track thanks to their conference-leading 151 points, but they're not taking anything for granted in the league's only division with more than one team with at least four wins.

"You don't get crowned champions for being the best-looking team right now," quarterback Tony Romo said after throwing three touchdown passes in last Sunday's 31-22 win over winless Cincinnati. "We know you don't win it right now. You just continue to get better, keep stacking up wins."

Though the Cowboys have done a fine job of that so far, they're just one team in a logjam at the top of the division. The reigning Super Bowl champion New York Giants are in first place at 4-0, a half-game ahead of Washington and Dallas. Philadelphia is last at 2-3 with two losses in the division.

Besides having to contend with arguably the deepest division in the NFL, the Cowboys are also struggling to live up to the high expectations set for them before the season. Their last three wins -- all against teams currently with losing records -- have been by an average of just 8.0 points.

Dallas scored the first 17 points last week before giving up 16 unanswered to the Bengals and needing a late push to hold on.

"I guess everybody expects us to be some kind of superheroes," Cowboys linebacker Bradie James said. "I come in here on Monday and I'm trying to enjoy my win and people are, like, beating us up. So it's really tough, man. With us having so many expectations, the only people we can make happy is in this locker room, and that's really it."

While failing to live up to expectations could be particularly costly in the East, it looks like Arizona (3-2) will have it much easier in the West, which features two of the conference's three lowest-scoring offenses in St. Louis and Seattle. The Cardinals are the division's only team with a winning record, and their West rivals are a combined 3-10.

Arizona looked like a legitimate contender last Sunday, when it recorded a season-high point total while handing Buffalo its first loss, 41-17. One week after turning the ball over seven times in a 56-35 loss to the New York Jets, the Cardinals won the turnover battle with the Bills 4-0.

"We're a tough team to beat when we don't turn the ball over," said coach Ken Whisenhunt, whose team has nine turnovers in its losses and none in its wins.

Arizona, second in the NFC with 147 points, got a big game from quarterback Kurt Warner, who was 33-for-42 for 250 yards and two touchdowns after throwing three interceptions and losing three fumbles the previous week.

Warner admitted last week that an injury to receiver Anquan Boldin is one of several reasons he's contemplating retirement, but backtracked a bit after Sunday's performance.

"Games like that make you want to play forever," he said.

Boldin is out indefinitely following surgery on a facial bone fractured in a helmet-to-helmet hit against the Jets. Warner, however, still has plenty of targets, including the emerging Steve Breaston, who has 16 receptions for 199 yards in his last two games after totaling four for 72 yards in his first three.

"This is just like any other week for me, to be honest," Breaston told the team's official Web site after last Sunday's win. "When the ball comes my way, I have to make a play, be a reliable resource for Kurt."

Cowboys receiver Terrell Owens remains a reliable resource for Romo, despite his mercurial nature. After Owens caught a 57-yard TD pass in the fourth quarter last week, he ecstatically raised his arms over his head and clapped while still grasping the ball in one hand. Owens then went to the bench, bowed, put a towel over his head and started crying.

Owens has since said that emotion was stirred because of the death of a family member and a talk with his pastor, though he didn't mention either after the game.

"Last week I was going through a lot of stuff, and the previous week," he said Wednesday. "Other than that, dude, I'm in good spirits. I'm fine."

The Cowboys have won 22 of their last 27 meetings with the Cardinals, including three straight. Romo threw for 308 yards and two touchdowns -- including one to Owens -- in Dallas' 27-10 victory Nov. 12, 2006.

Here Are The Arizona Cardinals

link

IRVING, Texas - A lot certainly has changed since the last time the Cowboys and Cardinals squared off in Arizona in 2006. Tony Romo, who made just his third career start in that November game, has established himself as one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL. On the defensive side of the ball, outside linebacker Greg Ellis has made a full recovery from a career-threatening Achilles tendon injury. But most importantly, the Cowboys franchise has compiled a 22-7 record since that game and will try to add one more win to the number when the Cardinals play host to Dallas at 3:15 p.m. (CDT) Sunday at University of Phoenix Stadium.

What's Up?
While traveling to Arizona to face the Cardinals has usually meant an automatic victory for the Cowboys, winning 23 of their last 33 meetings against them since they moved out to the desert, a win this Sunday may be harder to achieve than in recent years. The Cardinals are coming off an impressive 41-17 victory over the previously undefeated Buffalo Bills (4-1) and sit alone atop the NFC West with a 3-2 record. Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner, who caught national attention lately for his thoughts of retirement, has returned to Pro Bowl form, throwing for 1,472 yards and 10 touchdowns so far this season.

For the Cowboys, it would be safe to say a 4-1 record has never been scrutinized more. After pulling out a nine-point victory over the Cincinnati Bengals this past Sunday, the Cowboys are somehow just a half-game out of first place in the NFC East. And, what's even more surprising, the Cowboys lead the league with 151 points scored. Sure makes you wonder why the sky is falling so fast.

Statistical View

* While the Cowboys defense is being praised for its fierce pass rush, it is the Cardinals who hold the longest streak in the NFL by registering a sack in 28 consecutive games. The Cowboys have the second-longest streak, bringing down the quarterback in 22 straight.

* Think Tony Romo throws too many interceptions? While he has thrown at least one in eight consecutive regular-season games, there are seven quarterbacks who have thrown as many or more interceptions than Romo's five this season. Included in that list are Pro Bowlers Peyton Manning and Drew Brees who have thrown five and six, respectively.

* The Cardinals are currently riding a five-game home winning streak, but have not beaten the Cowboys in Arizona since 2002. The Quincy Carter-led Cowboys were intercepted four times that year in a Cardinals' 9-6 victory.

* The 2008 draft class has been kind to the Cardinals through the first five games of the season. Six of their eight picks have made a significant impact already this season, including running back Tim Hightower, who has rushed for five touchdowns.

Chalk Talk
Cowboys outside linebacker DeMarcus Ware, who has a sack in eight consecutive games dating back to last season, has a good chance of extending his streak to nine on Sunday. Arizona's offensive line ranks 22nd in the league in sacks allowed, giving up 12 through five games. In two career games against the Cardinals, Ware has totaled one sack, four tackles and a forced fumble.

If the Cowboys secondary thought containing Bengals wide receivers Chad Ocho Cinco and T.J. Houshmandzadeh were a tough assignment, hanging with Larry Fitzgerald and Steve Breaston might be an even bigger chore. With Pro Bowler Anquan Boldin out with a facial injury, Breaston has logged 16 catches for 199 yards in his past two games, and Fitzgerald has compiled 467 yards and four touchdowns in five games. A deflection into the arms of outside linebacker Greg Ellis marks the only interception the Cowboys have recorded this year, so getting pressure on Kurt Warner and forcing the former NFL MVP into bad decisions will be a major focus for the Cowboys.

Connections
Cardinals wide receiver Jerheme Urban caught passes from Cowboys quarterbacks in the 2006 preseason . . . A former second-round pick of the Cowboys in 2003 and two-year starter, center Al Johnson has started 14 career games for the Cardinals . . . Cowboys Pro Bowl left guard Leonard Davis was a first-round pick of the Cardinals in 2001 and became a six-year starter there until signing with the Cowboys in '07 as a free agent . . . Cardinals offensive coordinator Todd Haley was the Cowboys' receivers coach for three seasons (2004-06) . . . Cardinals defensive coordinator Clancy Pendergast spent seven years on the Cowboys staff, first as a quality control/defensive assistant coach, then as a linebackers and secondary coach (1996-02) . . . Cardinals running backs coach Maurice Carthon was the Cowboys' running backs coach for two seasons under Bill Parcells (2003-04) . . . Cardinals tight ends coach Freddie Kitchens spent the 2006 season with the Cowboys coaching tight ends . . . Offensive quality control coach Dedric Ward played the 2004 season with the Cowboys.

Miscellaneous
The Cowboys hold a commanding advantage in the series against the Cardinals, 55-28-1 . . . Cardinals running back Edgerrin James needs just 303 rushing yards to become the 10th leading rusher in NFL history . . . The eight rushing touchdowns this year by Arizona running backs Tim Hightower and Edgerrin James lead the NFL. The Cowboys, with Marion Barber (four) and Felix Jones (three) are tied for second with seven . . . The Cardinals hold sole possession of first place in a division this late into the season for the first time since 1988, which was their first season playing in Arizona, and their last full season under head coach Gene Stallings, the former Cowboys assistant.

Pacman Set To Play
NFL Reviewing Incident; Team Not Planning Discipline

link

IRVING, Texas - After conducting and completing a full investigation on Adam Jones' recent off-the-field incident, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said Thursday he doesn't expect his cornerback to be disciplined by the club.

As for the NFL, that could be a different story.

The league has begun its own investigation on Adam Jones' altercation with his personal bodyguard at a Dallas hotel Tuesday night that left some minor damage in the hotel bathroom after a reported physical altercation between the two.

In a rare press conference with reporters on Thursday, Jerry Jones told the media he was unaware of the league's timetable on a decision regarding a possible suspension.

"I think they view it very seriously . . . very seriously," the owner said. "I know firsthand they do, because the commissioner (Roger Goodell) was counting on me. He's certainly counting on me to really manage this."

Adam Jones met with members of the NFL's security team at Valley Ranch after participating in Thursday's practice. The Cowboys are preparing for him to not only play, but start in Sunday's game with the Arizona Cardinals.

The Cowboys are not expecting any decision or final announcement regarding the NFL's investigation on the incident by Friday. If a final decision is made of any kind, the Cowboys are expecting it to come no sooner than next week.

Jones is expected to start at left cornerback in place of Terence Newman, who is getting a second opinion about his lower abdominal strain, an injury that could potentially keep the Pro Bowl cornerback out for a month, if not longer, depending on the results of Newman's latest MRI tests.

And that makes the timing of this Pacman Jones incident even more concerning.

Still, Jerry Jones opened his media briefing on Thursday stating the club had "all the facts" of the incident, and didn't feel it warranted a fine or suspension from the team, despite Adam Jones' past, which included six arrests and more than 10 run-ins with authorities during his two years with the Titans. All of which led Goodell and the NFL to suspend Jones for the entire 2007 season.

"Knowing the facts," Jerry Jones said. "I'm not, as far as the availability of the information that I have right now, we don't have club discipline in mind."

As for the facts, Jerry Jones confirmed that Pacman and his bodyguard Tommy Jones, who was not only appointed by, but is being paid by the Cowboys owner to accompany the cornerback off the field, had some "friendly banter" that turned physical in the bathroom of the hotel, the site of a party hosted by the rapper "Ludacris."

According to police reports, Pacman physically punched his bodyguard, but Tommy Jones decided not to pursue any action with the authorities and the hotel decided not to file charges as well.

Early Thursday morning, the Dallas Police Department issued this statement:

"Two police elements arrived at the call and it was determined that the disturbance was over and that some hotel employees over heard a scuffle in the men's lobby restroom. According to the reporting officer, there were no witnesses that came forward, at that time, stating that an assault had occurred. The hotel management did point out that a glass light switch plate had been broken but stated everything was OK.

Both of the men, one being identified as Adam Jones and the other as his private bodyguard, stated everything was "OK". Both parties were driven from the location by an acquaintance. The information on the alleged assault by Mr. Jones was obtained after the incident had ended and the alleged victim, (bodyguard), did not want to pursue any action stating that this issue was a private matter."

Coincidentally enough, the incident occurred in the early morning of the day NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell was in town to meet with the team about league issues.

Goodell was a guest on ESPN Radio and said the league is continuing to investigate the matter and wouldn't speculate whether or not Jones would be suspended or fined.

"We are trying to determine all the facts," Goodell said. "It's clear there was some type of incident and we want to understand all the facts. Once we understand all the facts we can make a judgment.

"There were certain things I expected of him and I think he'd understand that," Goodell said. "I guess I'm disappointed we're having this discussion."

It was Goodell who officially lifted Jones' one-year suspension on Aug. 28, hours before the Cowboys' final preseason game with the Vikings. However, Goodell allowed the cornerback to participate with the Cowboys' during a summer mini-camp and training camp. And when Adam Jones made it through the summer without any incidents, Goodell lifted the suspension, allowing the cornerback to play with the team at the start of the season.

However, Jerry Jones admitted Thursday that he has talked with Pacman about keeping a low profile in public and has even asked him not to attend certain events, including a beach volleyball charity event that featured other professional athletes.

Overall, Jerry Jones said he was disappointed to learn of a new incident after asking his player to make better decisions.

"Yeah, I am disappointed. I am disappointed in that we're having to deal with this," Jerry Jones said Thursday. "We knew from the very beginning that because of bad decisions in the past from Adam that are well documented, that some need to be resolved and they need to be resolved in clarification as to what he was and what he wasn't doing in those incidents."

Jerry Jones added that because of the recent history of events involving Pacman, that he won't get the benefit of the doubt in any situation, and didn't exactly say he disagreed with that.

"I'm well aware of every incident that he was involved in before he joined the Dallas Cowboys," Jerry Jones said. "Consequently, he has built up, before he joined the Cowboys, he built up a reservoir of doubt. He has created with his actions no benefit of the doubt. We knew, not from the standpoint of protecting him physically, we knew that if he did go out in public that it was important - because he had no benefit of the doubt left - that it was important that if he got in an awkward situation, which can happen by notable people, that they be there to protect that as well.

"Now, candidly, it never occurred to any of us that he might have an incident that would be anywhere close to being public with an individual that was sitting there to keep that from happening. But that's what we're dealing with here."

Jerry Jones said he did not expect any changes in the security staff that accompanies Pacman, including removing Tommy Jones. The Cowboys owner did state that he hoped for the overall security process to "get better."

As of now, the Cowboys aren't expecting any kind of changes. Pacman Jones will continue to practice and get ready to play this week in Arizona and no disciplinary action is expected.

The NFL might have a different view, but it's not likely that will occur before the Cowboys play their next game.

Anyone have mouthwash?

I am nervous about this game. This will be a huge test for the secondary. Hopefully we can get a lot of pressure on Warner throughout the game.

Just FYI, you should go ahead and commit the final 5 bucks.... because vbookie will give you 25 vbucks if you have zero the next time a vbookie is created. If you have 5, it gives you nothing.

Newman Sidelined
CB Undergoes Surgery; Out At Least A Month

link

IRVING, Texas - The Cowboys won't have the services of Pro Bowl cornerback Terence Newman for another month, if not longer.

Newman underwent surgery Friday in Durham, N.C., to repair an abdominal strain, or sports hernia, an injury likely stemming from a groin injury that has bothered the cornerback for more than two months.

Newman flew to North Carolina to meet with Philadelphia-based Dr. William Meyers, considered the top sports hernia specialist in the country.

Recovery time for a sports hernia is usually four-to-six weeks. With that timetable, a likely return date for Newman would be the Nov. 16 game in Washington. That would mean Newman would miss four more games, including the Nov. 2 game at the Giants, before the Cowboys get their bye week.

After going through four full seasons without missing a game, Newman missed two games last season with a foot injury, but still managed to return and get selected to his first Pro Bowl. This year, Newman has already missed two games and now after the surgery, at least four more.

Newman initially suffered a slight groin tear in the first week of training camp in Oxnard, Calif., in late July. He missed the rest of camp, all four preseason games and the regular-season opener in Cleveland after he suffered a minor setback in the week of practice leading up to the first game.

Newman returned to action the next three games, recording 11 tackles and a pass deflection before another practice setback kept him out of last week's game in Cincinnati.

Without Newman, the Cowboys are planning to start Adam "Pacman" Jones, despite his altercation this week with his private bodyguard at a Dallas hotel. The Cowboys completed their own investigation and owner Jerry Jones said Thursday the team would not discipline Adam Jones, even with his past that includes six prior arrests since being drafted by the Titans in 2005.

The NFL is still reviewing the case but is not expected to make an announcement or any ruling, which could include a suspension, until next week.

Even with Adam Jones set to start at left cornerback opposite right corner Anthony Henry, look for the Cowboys to heavily count on a pair of rookie cornerbacks Sunday in Arizona. Both Mike Jenkins and Orlando Scandrick will likely get plenty of action, including Scandrick, who replaces Newman in the slot in the dime package.

Young CBs Prepare For Warner, Cards' Offense

Anquan Boldin's nasal fracture will keep him sidelined a second consecutive game Sunday, but the Cardinals proved last week they could score in bunches without their star wideout when quarterback Kurt Warner hit nine different receivers in a 41-17 win over Buffalo.

And with cornerback Terence Newman (abdomen) out for the second straight game, the Cowboys once again must rely more heavily on rookies Mike Jenkins and Orlando Scandrick against Arizona's multi-receiver sets.

Anthony Henry and Adam "Pacman" Jones will start, with Scandrick typically playing Newman's slot position and Jenkins playing right corner when Henry moves inside in dime situations. Both young corners - Jenkins is a first-round pick, Scandrick a fifth-rounder - have been able to come along slowly thanks to the Cowboys' depth at the position.

That depth is being tested by Newman's abdominal injury. And both say they're ready to continue an expanded role.

"Every play that I get I get more comfortable, and just getting the feeling of being with those guys (on defense)," Jenkins said.

Said Scandrick: "I'm just preparing myself for everything. I'm watching film like I'm a starter. So whatever they call upon me to do, I'll be ready."

Larry Fitzgerald is Warner's primary option with Boldin injured, but last week Arizona got contributions from backups Steve Breaston (7 catches for 77 yards), Early Doucet (6 for 42) and Jerheme Urban (3 for 10).

No matter the personnel, Warner was effective using a short passing attack against Buffalo and will challenge the Cowboys' zone and man defensive looks on Sunday.

"I'm prepared for the scheme," Scandrick said. "They're more of a scheme-oriented team. Obviously they're going to try to work the ball to their guy, but it's all based on concept and scheme."

Watkins Out

After practicing on a limited basis throughout the week, Cowboys safety Pat Watkins (neck) did not participate in Friday's final full practice and officially has been ruled out of Sunday's game.

With Roy Williams (forearm) out at least another game, Keith Davis will start again at strong safety and Courtney Brown will play in nickel and dime situations. Williams did, however, return to practice this week for the first time since having a plate and screws surgically inserted in his arm last month to stabilize his fracture.

The rest of the Cowboys' injury report remains unchanged. Listed as probable are fullback Deon Anderson (knee), defensive end Stephen Bowen (hamstring), center Andre Gurode (ankle), nose tackle Tank Johnson (ankle) and tight end Jason Witten (shoulder). Johnson had been limited in practice as a precaution until Friday, but the others have had full participation all week. Guard Kyle Kosier (foot) will not play.

Felix Honored

For the third time in five weeks, rookie running back Felix Jones has been named the Diet Pepsi NFL Player of the Week for last Sunday's nine-carry, 96-yard performance that included a 33-yard touchdown run.

Jones also won the award in Weeks Two and Three, when he became the first Cowboys rookie to score a touchdown in each of his first three games.

After the regular season, five players will be nominated for Diet Pepsi NFL Rookie of the Year honors. Fans can vote for the winner on NFL.com/rookies and via Sprint wireless service throughout the month of January. The winner will be announced at a press conference at Super Bowl XLIII in Tampa Bay.

Short Shots

Cardinals defensive end Bertrand Berry (groin), starting cornerbacks Eric Green (groin) and Rod Hood (groin) and starting safety Adrian Wilson (hamstring) were limited again in Friday's practice. All are questionable for Sunday . . . With their five sacks against Buffalo, the Cardinals now have at least one sack in 28 consecutive regular-season games - the longest streak in the league. The Cowboys have the second-longest streak at 22 games . . . The Cardinals have won five straight home games and are 2-0 at University of Phoenix Stadium this year, but they haven't won six home games in a season since moving to Arizona 20 years ago.

While I do appreciate the support, I think I'll use to it buy stuff I always wanted like a jet, a Pegasus, and an iron man suit. Maybe an island too? I hear Iceland is going for cheap these days, I wonder if they are desperate enough to go for imaginary money....

I was just wondering what's the vExchange Rate right now. I was thinking of cashing out right now. I mean 184 quadrillion vDollars has to be worth a couple of real bucks, right?
