Default Soriano claimed by twins

The Minnesota Twins have claimed second baseman Alfonso Soriano off waivers, according to a report in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
The report states the Twins claimed Soriano to block a trade to another team and the clubs do not expect to make a deal.

Last month, the Rangers and the Twins talked about Soriano before the July 31 trade deadline but could not come to an agreement because the Rangers reportedly wanted highly touted Minor League pitcher Francisco Liriano and the Twins were not willing to part with him.

The Rangers and the Twins have 48 hours to work out a deal. Should the clubs not come to an agreement by Monday, the Rangers can pull him back or let him go to the Twins. If he is pulled back, Soriano cannot be traded for the rest of the season.

Soriano entered play Sunday hitting .282 with 30 home runs and 84 RBIs.

It won't happen. From today's FWST:

Soriano watch

Rangers officials continue to downplay the possibility of a trade with the Minnesota Twins, who claimed second baseman Alfonso Soriano off waivers. The Rangers are expected to pull Soriano back today if a deal doesn't get done.

The Twins would give up Joe Mays, who is 6-8 with a 5.00 ERA, but the Rangers want young pitching, which Minnesota is unwilling to part with.
Beginning to think they should have taken the Twins package at the deadline. I have no faith that Hart will get market value now or in the offseason.

Much ado about nothing...and I do mean nothing at all. This is a procedural mvoe done every stinking year by 100% of all mlb teams. Every man on the roster will be revocably waived at some point after the nonwaiver trading deadline passes. It happens every year. Sometimes teams are wowed by offers and trades are made. Sometimes, a guy slips through and trades are made. sometimes, teams allow the player to go to teh other team without revoking the waiver (although that is rare for many reasons).

It's the normal process that occurs every year.

Most players who are worth anything get claimed as a procedural move to ensure that the player won't get a shot at being traded to a rival contender. In this scenario, it is most unlikely that the team who owns the player of value will do anything other than revoke the waiver.

Conversely, if a guy like Phil Nevin were claimed, I am pretty certain the Rangers would allow the waiver claim.
