Default Dirk's numbers in elimination games

In 16 career elimination games in the playoffs:

Points per game: 30.25
Rebounds: 12.5
Assists: 2.4
Blocks: 1.3
Steals: 1.1
FGM: 9.9
FGA: 20.1
FG%: 49.4%
3ptM: 1.5
3ptA: 3.4
3pt%: 43.6%
FTM: 8.9
FTA: 9.9
FT%: 89.3

Twice he has gone for 42 or more.
Dirk has gone for 30 or more in 11 of the 16 games.
He has gone for 28 or more in 13 of the 16 games.
He has gone for 20 or more in 14 of the 16 games.

He has had 10 or more rebounds in 13 of the 16 games.
He has had 8 or more boards in 15 of the 16 games.
Nine out of the 16 games, he's gone for 13 or more boards.

So, the guy that has no heart and that's soft..and that isn't a true scorer because he doesn't bad mouth his opponents isn't too damn soft when it matters most.

People have called Dirk "soft". However, i've never heard one person say he wasn't a great player. And the only reason people call him soft is because he's a #1 option jumpshooting big man. We've been programmed to see big men dominant the interior and are not accustom to big men having jumpshots like a 2 guard.

Dtown, his free throw numbers indicate that he's a bit more than just a jumpshooter.
As for people saying that he's not great, ...well, you just haven't paid much attention to the national media over the years..... hell, even the local media.

The good news is that the stats in elimination games indicate that Dirk will be great in game 5. However, his elimination numbers aren't quite what he's put up this series... So let's hope he doesn't dip from 35 ppg on average in this series to the 30 ppg that he averages for his career in elimination games.

Well I know Dirk can score all over the court. But his perception around the league is he's a jumpshooting big man. When people talk about Dirk it isn't about his defense or his inside game. Its how amazing of a jumpshooter he is for his size.

And i've never heard anyone not say Dirk wasn't a great player. He just won the MVP award 3 years ago. They don't just give that to guys suiting up. Winning MVP alone shows how what the coaches and nba analysts think of you. Aren't they the ones that vote on that award? He's get roasted for his defense. Rightfully so IMO. And you have some guys in town that thinks Dirk is overhyped and overrated. You have people who feel the same way about guys like Dwayne Wade and Kevin Garnett. But i've never heard one person say Dirk's not a great player. Maybe question his toughness and maybe question his want but i've never heard anyone say Dirk's a bum. Even his toughest critics in the TNT crew give Dirk his credit as a great offensive player.

Dirk is 2nd in the playoffs this year behind only Lebron.

Also, Dirk has 5 40/10 career playoff games. Only active player with more is Shaq.

I forgot how well he played in that 6th game. Freaking Terry going 2-11 from three and Howard doing his usual thing killed us. Oh, and Devin indiscriminately driving right into Zo/Shaq and getting his sh*t rejected.

Some other great playoff stat they showed this season:

Dirk is 1 of 5 total postseason 25/10 performer in the NBA history.

Default Dirk usually brings his best when Mavs' backs are against the wall

We know Dirk will show up tonight..

What about the rest of the team??

--------

http://mavsblog.dallasnews.com/archi...en-mavs-b.html

Dirk usually brings his best when Mavs' backs are against the wall

Tim MacMahon

Until he wins a ring, there will always be debate about whether Dirk can be the centerpiece of a championship team.

But there's no doubt that he routinely shows up for big games.

As pointed out on this here blog on the eve of the postseason, Dirk's stats indicate that he's a premier playoff performer. His career playoff averages (25.4 ppg, 11.0 rpg) are significantly better than his regular-season numbers. He's one of five 25/10 playoff producers in NBA history.

And he's even better when the Mavs' backs are against the wall. Tonight will be the 16th time Dirk has played in a win-or-go-home game. He has averaged 30.8 points and 13.3 rebounds in the previous 15 elimination games. The Mavs won eight of those games, highlighted by Dirk's epic 37-point, 15-rebound performance to carry the Mavs over the Spurs in a road Game 7.

So Dirk putting up 44 points and 13 rebounds to in a sweep-preventing Game 4 win wasn't stunning. It'd be surprising if he doesn't have another outstanding performance in the Pepsi Center tonight.

(Follow the jump for a list of Dirk's elimination game efforts.)

2001
Game 3 vs. Utah: 33 points, 10 rebounds (W)

Game 4 vs. Utah: 33 points, 10 rebounds (W)

Game 5 vs. Utah: 18 points, 4 rebounds (W)

Game 4 vs. San Antonio: 30 points, 9 rebounds (W)

Game 5 vs. San Antonio: 42 points, 18 rebounds (L)

2002
Game 5 vs. Sacramento: 32 points, 12 rebounds (L)

2003
Game 7 vs. Portland: 31 points, 11 rebounds (W)

Game 7 vs. Sacramento: 30 points, 19 rebounds (W)

(Did not play in deciding game of conference against San Antonio due to knee injury)

2004
Game 5 vs. Sacramento: 31 points, 14 rebounds (L)

2005
Game 7 vs. Houston: 14 points, 14 rebounds (W)

I don't know what Dirk's numbers were tonight. (Actually I should say "have been," since there are seven minutes left in this beat-down we are presently administering.) But I know that that W/L is good, and I know that we get another one on Thursday, and I'm sure that the big German is going to have good memories of the last such match he played in that building.

15/9/2/2 blocks/2 steals

7-14, 1-1 fts

I'll take that while being double teammed practically every touch. SA has abandoned the straight up play the last two games and they are hard doubling him almost every touch. Hopefully Butler can continue to hit shots, because he's going to get them.

I don't know why, but that might be my second biggest memory of that series behind D-Whistle. They just owned Devin Harris all series long.

This is only the fourth elimination game in which Dirk scored fewer than 20 points, and the Mavs are 3-1 in those games.

That 8-point showing @GS is an outlier of the highest order, and yet the most overused by all Dirk haters.
