It's cool that they built video chatting right into the phone. However, I've heard rumors that they left the front facing camera closed to the api, meaning apps like Skype couldn't use it.
If that's true, that's a huge negative. Having it built into the OS is nice, but being able to video chat with anyone, not just someone with another iphone 4, is better.

I'm not going to do anything with my iPhone any time soon. I like it just fine...but if they don't have Flash support by the time my battery dies or whatever, then I am getting something else. I am tired of their stubborn bullsh$t.

looks like you are eligible for an upgrade to the new iPhone 6 months before your 2 year deal ends, etc. I guess that makes me eligible in Dec. I cant wait to hear all the whining and bitching from people on the internets about that one.

Well then be prepared to go Android buddy. They made a point during the presentation today to pimp HTML 5, talking about how much they loved it because it was open and uncontrolled. Which is the absolutely height of irony if you ask me.

Are you sure? I'm pretty sure it just means anyone whose plan is expiring in 2010 can get one when it comes out. I doubt ATT is extending the six months early thing all year.

Well they are to my understanding. My upcoming upgrade(or 2 years expiring) was to be in December and i called AT&T and confirmed I have an upgrade available right now. (hence me being able to get the new phone).

Um...right. This is what I saying. From what I've read, if your plan expires at any point in 2010, you can get a new iPhone when it's released. But I don't think they're going to extend it to the end of the year, and let people that are up in June of 2011 get a new phone in December of 2010.
But I could be wrong.

If your contract ends anywhere between today and December 31st, you can upgrade early (6/24). Any day after that you would have to wait. Say you have one on Jan 1st, you would have to wait until Jan 1st to get it and a person with a December 31st upgrade can get it on June 24th. It is only this 6 month window of opportunity.
I lucked out, my upgrade would have been coming until December 29th. I made the window by 2 days.

It looks awesome. But they release a phone every two years and for the first time they didn't introduce a single thing that another smart phone doesn't do (except for perhaps the book store).
And there are things it doesn't do that it should (Flash, no 4G until next model in two years?)
Just saying.
I AM interested in seeing what the "Retina" display is like. That could be an ace in the hole. Well that and they're selling a white one. That will get people all in a tizzy.

Three that I can think of.
I'm not saying it's not a sweet phone. Just doesn't really justify the fervor it causes when comparable phones are being released to much less fanfare.

I don't really understand why they don't do the flash..or java? I don't know the technical reasons I guess because I am not fluent in that area... but it's almost like they don't just because they can.

They have claimed that it would drain battery life. But other phones obviously support it.

The Flash thing has got to be about copyright and control, as in, Flash would cause them to give up some measure of control over what you can do with your iphone.

I agree that is what it is probably really about. You see how controlling they are with the apps.

there is going to be a firestorm of people complaining about that one. I'm still unsure of what i would do. I would probably need to see the new iPhone in person. I kinda wonder why AT&T wouldn't let people just upgrade to the new iPhone every year? It just keeps extending people's contracts which means more money in their pockets. It keeps their customer base growing. Not to mention, when someone sells their old iPhone, the person who buys that, might throw that on AT&T's network; which again is more revenue from them. Any thoughts from anybody? Yes, i realize that AT&T gives Apple > $300 bones per device sold.

I originally was like eh, who cares about 720p video. But the more i think about it, that would be awesome! I love taking videos of my dog or of me shooting guns and throwing those videos up on youtube. I also enjoy filming random stuff at parties or whatever. I usually just use my canon sd 710 (i think) and it shoots videos at 640 X 480..so it's pretty crappy. But, not that bad. If the iPhone could do a lot better, it's one less device to carry around, or one less device to pack in my range bag, etc. Genius.
I am concerned though about the iPhone having glass on the front and the back of the phone, but in the presentation, they said, the glass is 20 times stronger than plastic. So i guess we shall see.

FLASH THOUGHTS-
I've read that steve jobs hates adobe flash, because it is buggy and crashes. I've read that he thinks there are much better alternatives than flash. I'm assuming he means HTML 5. I think battery draining is also in issue too. Another thing that i personally believe is why they said no to flash is this: how many websites on the internet have free games that are embedded on the site in flash? Like a million, right? Well, what are some of the hottest apps in the app store? Games. Yes, that's right. It is my opinion that if Jobs allowed flash on the iPhone, then people could play games on web pages, which would reduce people downloading and playing games from the app store. This, in turn would/could reduce revenue for apple and also for app developers. Which probably funks up their whole business model regarding the app store. Not to mention now they have that crappy iAd service or whatever. What do you guys think?

I'm thinking of getting an upgrade on my phone for the iphone 4g, my contract is up in July . But, now i'm a bit confused. I dont know whether i should get this phone or switch over to Sprint and get the HTC Evo 4G.
