Mavs make offer for Artest!
http://www.sacbee.com/kings/story/1089066.html
According to a source close to Dallas, the Mavericks offered 14th year swingman Jerry Stackhouse and fourth-year forward Brandon Bass for Kings small forward Ron Artest. The Kings are not expected to entertain the offer if it doesn't include Dallas small forward Josh Howard, but the inquiry certainly reveals the level of the Mavs' interest. According to the source, Howard does not appear to be available. -- Sac Bee

The Insider "article" is just exactly what you posted, word for word.
And FYI, we're already discussing this in the "Carlisle would want to coach Artest again" thread.

Josh Howard AND Brendon Bass? No thanks. One of them and that's it. I'm sick of overpaying for players (ahem, Jason Kidd).

New idea: Kings want incoming Josh .. Mavs want outgoing Stack/Bass
Trade with Bobcats/Clippers/Kings/Mavericks
Send Damp/Okafor/Josh/Jones for Miller/Thomas/Artest/Garcia.. Kings restart with Okafor and Josh..
Send Miller/Stack/Terry for sign and trade Okafor and Richardson from Charlotte.. Bobcats don't lose Okafor for nothing, Terry is a good value for Richardson and overall the Stack added..
After all trade Thomas/Bass/Jones for Kaman + X.. LAC have Camby now become PF with Thomas/Bass?
Kaman(Miller)/Diop
Dirk/Artest/Singleton
Artest/Wright/George
Richardson/Garcia/Green/Foster
Kidd/Garica
:-) Easy going?

Dallas Mavericks say no to Artest-for-Josh Howard offer
Source: Dallas Mavericks say no to Artest-for-Josh Howard offer
01:47 AM CDT on Friday, July 18, 2008
By BRANDON GEORGE / The Dallas Morning News
bgeorge@dallasnews.com
The Sacramento Kings have expressed interest in acquiring Dallas Mavericks forward/guard Josh Howard in a trade for All-Star forward Ron Artest, but the Mavericks aren't interested, according to an NBA source.
The Mavericks reportedly were willing to offer forward Brandon Bass and guard Jerry Stackhouse for Artest. But the Kings wanted Howard included in the deal, halting the discussions.
Source: Mavs say no to Kings' Artest-for-Josh Howard offer
Because the Mavericks won't budge on Howard, a potential trade for Artest is all but dead, the source said.
Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban declined comment in an e-mail to The Dallas Morning News.
A deal for Artest would have given the Mavericks an All-Star caliber starter at every position except center and reunited Artest with head coach Rick Carlisle, who coached Artest when he played for the Indiana Pacers.
Trade rumors have swirled about Artest this summer. The Kings and Los Angeles Lakers were reportedly in talks about an Artest-for-Lamar Odom swap, but that has since fizzled. The San Antonio Spurs and Phoenix Suns also have shown interest.
Artest, 28, is one of the top defensive players in the NBA and has averaged 16 points, 5.1 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game over his nine-year career. Artest has career playoff averages of 17.3 points and 6.1 rebounds per game.
Artest (6-7, 248) is with his third NBA team but doesn't seem to be slowing. He averaged a career-best 20.5 points per game last season with the Kings.
Bass and Stackhouse for Artest would have been almost a wash in terms of salaries. Artest is set to make $7.4 million next season. Stackhouse will earn $7 million next season and Bass $826,269.
Stackhouse, 33, averaged a career-low 10.7 points per game last season, his 13th in the NBA. The 23-year-old Bass, however, set career-highs by averaging 8.3 points and 4.4 rebounds per game last season, his third. Bass (6-8, 240) spent his first two seasons with the New York Knicks.
Howard, 28, averaged a career-best 19.9 points and seven rebounds per game last season, his fifth. He was All-Star in 2007 and will earn $9.945 million next season.
Howard, 6-5, had a rocky finish last season. He went on a local radio show and discussed his off-season marijuana use during the Mavericks' playoff series against the New Orleans Hornets. And after a playoff loss, he passed out fliers in the locker room inviting teammates to celebrate his birthday at a Dallas nightclub.
But despite Howard's off-court antics in late April, the Mavericks don't seem willing to deal the versatile swingman. At least not yet.

The Mavs are playing this smart. All teams are gonna try to get Artest for fairly cheap.
I don't see what SA or Phoenix has to offer.
Pho could offer Grant Hill and Raja Bell, but I don't see it. Doubt Sacramento wants Diaw either.
SA has even less basically a bunch of junk behind their big three.

On hoopshype it mentions that Denver declined a trade of Linas Kleiza for Artest ... so I don't think a Stack and Bass deal is any different from the Linas Kleiza deal that they were willing to accept.
Bass is about the same value as Kleiza IMO.
So maybe this will actually happen, which would be sick.
Kidd / Terry / Barea
Artest / Foster
Howard / R. Terry
Dirk / Rhodes / D. Miles? <-- I think it will be ok.

Any trade is fine as long as it doesn't include Brandon Bass. Bass performs the best on the Mavericks team after Nowitzki, he just never gets the minutes or opportunity to show his value.

And he never will so long as Dirk is our PF.

If we can pull off a Bass + Stack for Artest it would indeed be sweet, but failing to involve Josh Howard in a deal may be a huge mistake.

Trade idea that would get the Mavs a Championship
I believe the Dallas Mavericks need some changes to their current roster if they hope to win an NBA title. We all know that Dirk is the superstar of the team, but besides him, there is nobody on the current team that can step up and help fill his shoes.
Please consider the following two trade ideas to help the Mavericks become an elite team:
1) I hope the rumors are true that we are trying to get Ron Artest for Stack and Bass. If we are able to trade anybody on the roster (except Josh or Dirk), then Artest can be the Mavericks number 2 scoring option. Also, he is a lock down defender that can play against the best shooting guards and small forwards in the league.
2) Trade Josh Howard and other players to Charlotte to get Emeka Okafor. Okafor has averaged a double-double every year that he has been in the league. He is an outstanding low post defender and he can play either power forward or center, thus allowing flexibility to the roster's depth. Okafor is only 25 yrs. old and hasn't even started to play his best basketball yet. He would be a great young superstar to help carry the load once Dirk and Artest are past their prime.
08 Starting Roster Could Look Like This:
G Jason Kidd
G Josh Terry (or Gerald Green if Jason is traded)
F Ron Artest
F Dirk Nowitzki
C Emeka Okafor / backup - Diop
Let me know what you think.

This trade would be flat out SWEET if it goes down.

DMN reporting that Artest was available only if the Mavs would give up JHo. Apparently the talks are dead because we wouldn't give up JHo.

Right on. Every team but Dallas seems to be able to get great players at bargain deals.
We've done the give up a lot to get a lot... it never works out for us.
No more of this crap. Yeah I'd like Artest, but he's not THAT good.
