Default HOLY COW. Juan Gonzalez Traded by the Rangers

In the first of what is surely to be at least 3-5 trades before the deadline, the Texas Rangers have traded Juan Gonzalez. No details are currently available on his destination, but the story jsut broke. More details will be posted as they are available. Note that Gonzo had to waive his no trade clause and that he had said he would not waive it unless someone gave him an extension. Some early rumors were that NY wanted him, but we will soon see.

As bad as this team is this season this si the right thing to do.

Startle-gram and DMN say agreement in principle, but details not finalized. Startle-gram adds they are waiting on Gonzo's approval to waive non-trade clause.

Word is now that it will be to an NL team. The Montreal Expos maybe? The league would have to allow them to add payroll if so. He does have a great relationship with the Expos brass though. Maybe San Fran for some pitching? This is exciting.

Note: The no trade will have to be addressed. It is now clear that the Rangers and some other NL team have agreed in principle. Gonzo must waive his no-trade for this trade to go down. Also, the Rangers are said to be eating most of Juan's salary, so I expect if the trade goes through that we will be getting someone (or a couple of guys) that are solid prospects or players.

Hart: Rangers to trade Gonzalez for youth
06/25/2003

By BILL CAMPBELL / The Dallas Morning News

ARLINGTON ? The Rangers have made an agreement in principle to trade two-time American League MVP Juan Gonzalez and will not use him in Tuesday?s game against Oakland, general manager John Hart said.

Hart did not disclose the team with which the agreement has been reached, citing that details have not been concluded. Gonzalez has a no-trade clause in his one-year, $13 million contract, and would have to approve any deal.

Hart said the deal has been four or five days in the making.

"With the trade of Ruben Sierra and potentially this one, our focus is going to be acquiring young players and turning the page," Hart said.

Anyone on this roster not named Texiera, Blalock, Lewis, Cordero or Arod should be available at this point. Maybe Mench. I've heard some pretty good Pudge returning rumors in the last week by the way....

Now Jamey Newberg himself is reporting..."Peter Gammons is reporting that Montreal is the team with which a trade has been struck. That's all I know."

Newberg has the insider skinny.

BTW, How the hell are you Rob? Long time no see. Too long.

Personally, with this season already down the drain, I kind of wish they would keep Gonzalez a little longer. I enjoy the fake Juan calls on the Musers in the mornings.

Gammons just reported that Juan vetoed the deal.

But is supposed to meet with Expos GM. he apparently wants an extension in the trade, but Expos weren't offering it.

yeah, omar manaya (sp?) will be in Texas tomorrow to speak with Juan.

anyways, I don't expect juan to change his mind. That's why he had the no-trade clause put in his contract..so that he wouldn't have to leave texas for the two years. plus, i doubt he wants to play his home games on turf with as many nagging injuries as he's had..but we'll see

No deal: Agent says Gonzalez won't go to Expos

06/25/2003

By SEAN HORGAN / The Dallas Morning News

ARLINGTON - Rangers outfielder Juan Gonzalez, through his agent Jeff Moorad, on Tuesday night turned down a proposed trade to the Montreal Expos that would have netted the Rangers two young players and possibly three.

Moorad, speaking in the press dining room during the fourth and fifth innings of the Rangers-Oakland A's game, cited family issues and Gonzalez's ties to the Texas community forged during two stints as a Ranger as the outfielder's reasons for refusing the deal.

Gonzalez, who was not in the lineup Tuesday night, has a full no-trade clause in his contract that ends after this season that allowed him to block the deal.

Gonzalez, hitting .286 with 18 home runs and 50 RBIs, had 72 hours - beginning at 9 a.m. on Wednesday - to make a decision. It didn't take him nearly that long.

"We negotiated the no-trade language for a reason," Moorad said. "We understand that Texas is going to go with a youth-oriented lineup, and (Juan) understands he won't be in the picture next year."

Moorad said Gonzalez's mother and sister live in North Texas.

"It seems almost incongruous to accept a trade to Montreal," Moorad said.

Moorad said Expos general manager Omar Minaya was on his way here to try to convince Gonzalez, with whom he has a relationship stretching back to Minaya's days as an assistant general manager for the Rangers, to take the deal.

Moorad made it clear that will be a waste of time, but said they would give Minaya the courtesy of an audience.

"Obviously, we're disappointed," Rangers general manager John Hart said after hearing Moorad's comments. "When Jeff called me, he didn't officially tell me they were turning it down. He said they were leaning that way. So, we'll withhold judgment until we get official notification.

"We made it clear Juan does not fit into our plans, and we gave him the opportunity to play and participate in a pennant race. The choice was his."

The Rangers had agreed in principle to the trade late Monday night, hoping to get some much-needed pitching in return from the pitching-rich Expos.

The Rangers have made no secret - and their record certainly bears it out - of their need for pitching. A baseball source said the most prominent names in the deal were right-handed pitcher Seung Song and second baseman Josh McKinley.

The other players discussed, if not immediately included in the deal, were right-handed pitching prospects Chris Young and Josh Karp and catcher Michael Barrett.

The deal, though agreed to in principle, could have changed depending on how it was structured financially if the Rangers agreed to pay a portion of Gonzalez's salary.

Young, a 24-year-old, 6-10 right-hander who played basketball at Princeton, is a native of Dallas. He was 11-9, 3.11 last season at Class A Hickory. This season, he was 4-1, 1.22 at Class A Brevard County before being promoted on June 1 to Double-A Harrisburg.

Karp, 23, is a 6-5 right-hander. He was 7-5, 3.84 last season at Double-A Harrisburg and 4-1, 1.59 at Class a Brevard. This season he is 2-1, 3.86 at Double-A Harrisburg.

The Rangers made an unusual move before Tuesday's game by announcing the deal in principle - without giving any hint of where Gonzalez might be headed - and saying the only thing standing in the way of its consummation is Gonzalez's approval.

Gonzalez declined comment.

"I'm not talking to you guys," he said angrily to a writer from The Morning News.

The deal seemed to make sense for the Expos on several fronts. With right fielder Vladimir Guerrero out, they need an outfielder with punch. They have six games remaining in San Juan, Puerto Rico and are expected to return there next season for at least 40 games.

Gonzalez was born and raised on the island and is a revered baseball figure on the same plane as Roberto Clemente and Orlando Cepeda.

Gonzalez, who is the all-time RBI leader among players from Puerto Rico (1,367), had his best games of the season in the electric atmosphere of Hiram Bithorn Stadium in three games there earlier this month. He went 4-for-14, with one home run and four RBIs in those games. He also made several excellent defensive plays and stole his only base of the season.

Gonzalez makes $12.5 million this year, with $4.5 million deferred at 2.5 percent.

I guess you can't blame Juando for not taking the deal, it is afterall part of his contract. The only reason the guy keeps coming back to Dallas is because he likes it here, i don't know any other player who would come back to a team who traded him to the Tigers, and still enjoys playing here. That kind of loyalty is appreciated in my book.

Default HOLY COW. Juan Gonzalez Traded by the Rangers

Like Kenny "The Dipshit" Rogers, Juan Gonzalez will never play in Dallas again if he negates this trade .....unless he is in the visitors dugout.

It does suck though that juan declined the trade, it would have really helped the Rangers get some young pitchers.

Hicks needs to learn to be less NTC-happy. There are 4 current Stars w/them. How many Rangers? If you're going to have them, have the player earn it like Modano. Admitedly I don't know much about baseball, but this is becoming a trend.

I do not think NBA has any players with such a contract. Thats why we see some stupid trades like Vin Baker's.

I think maybe it is. Don't hear about it in football either. NFL & MLB are the more successful of the "Big 4" of sports.

Not true really. He will undoubtedly be a Type A free agent which will give the Rangers a first round draft pick from the team that signs him if they offer him a qualifying contract.

it's hard to blame juan for staying in texas..it's in his contract for a reason. However, do credit Hicks and Hart with another boneheaded move.

How I wish we still had a real GM. Hart is too concerned about winning now. So much so that he has killed our chances of being a decent team in the next 2-3 years. And Hicks defends him at every turn.

Hicks, I love what you did with the Stars, but if you are going to sell one of your teams, can it be the Rangers? Please?

Gonzalez, Expos GM Minaya meet Wednesday
Associated Press

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Texas outfielder Juan Gonzalez was held out of the Rangers' lineup again Wednesday night as the two-time AL MVP considered whether to accept or reject a trade that would send him to the Montreal Expos .

Despite assertions by his attorney that he would likely invoke the no-trade clause in his contract, Gonzalez said he hasn't made that determination.

"I haven't decided,'' Gonzalez said after taking batting practice before Wednesday night's game against Oakland.

Gonzalez has until Saturday morning to make his decision. He said he wasn't sure when he would decide.

The Expos reached an agreement with Texas on Tuesday to acquire Gonzalez, but his attorney, Jeff Moorad, said then that Gonzalez "in all likelihood" would block the deal.

A message left at Moorad's office Wednesday night wasn't immediately returned.

Gonzalez met Wednesday with Montreal general manager Omar Minaya, who has a long history with the slugger.

"I have met with him but I'm not going to talk about the meeting," Minaya said.

Minaya is credited with helping develop Gonzalez for the Rangers in the mid-1980s, when he coached the Gulf Coast Rangers for three years.

The last-place Rangers were expected to receive prospects, possibly three of them, if Gonzalez goes to Montreal. The Expos are in the thick of the NL wild-card race.

Manager Buck Showalter said Gonzalez was available for him to use, but he held him out of the starting lineup and had spoken to him.

"I talked to him about the whys and the factors," Showalter said. "I told him we support him, either way, whatever decision he makes."

Gonzalez is in the second year of his $24 million, two-year deal, and $4.5 million of his $12 million salary this season deferred. The 33-year-old outfielder is hitting .286 with 18 homers and 50 RBI.

The Rangers have made it clear that they want to move forward with younger players and that Gonzalez, in his second stint with the team for which he signed at age 16, won't be re-signed after this season.

Texas has already traded outfielder Ruben Sierra to the New York Yankees for a minor leaguer. Other potential movers before the July 31 trading deadline are closer Ugueth Urbina , starters Ismael Valdes and John Thomson and outfielder Carl Everett , all players that eligible for free agency after this season.

Gonzalez spent several minutes in the clubhouse Wednesday talking to Urbina, who spent parts of seven seasons in Montreal. The subject and nature of their talk wasn't known.

The Expos play on artificial turf, and that could factor against a player with a history of injuries. He has never played for an NL team.

Gonzalez was the AL MVP in 1996 and '98 for Texas, but was traded to Detroit in a nine-player deal in November 1999 because he was going to be a free agent the following season. He played just one season with the Tigers and then spent a year in Cleveland before returning to the Rangers.

Gonzales vetoed the deal. Rangers can pay the price for mistakes they have done.
