Brown, Karl named NBA Coaches of Month
March 1, 2005

NEW YORK (Ticker) - Larry Brown of the Detroit Pistons and George Karl of the Denver Nuggets were named NBA Coaches of the Month for February, the league announced Tuesday.

Brown led the Pistons to a 9-1 record, the team's highest winning percentage in a month since Detroit went 10-1 in February 1990.

The Pistons, who are on a seven-game winning streak, held their opponents under 90 points in seven of their nine wins and averaged 7.4 blocks, 7.0 steals and only 12.3 turnovers in February.

Karl, in his first full month as Denver coach, led the team to an 8-4 record. Denver was 4-0 at home and 4-4 on the road. The Nuggets had only eight road wins before Karl arrived.

In February, the Nuggets were much improved defensively, allowing 92.3 points per game (sixth in the league) on 42.6 percent shooting. Entering the month, Denver was giving up 97.8 points per game on 45.7 percent shooting.

Other candidates included Boston's Doc Rivers, Dallas' Don Nelson, Houston's Jeff Van Gundy, Stan Van Gundy of the Miami Heat and Milwaukee's Terry Porter.

Nellie led his team to a 10-3 record in a tough month that included several road victories against elite teams. And he did that without Damp, Stack, Daniels & Henderson for several games. How could Karl's record of 8-4 played against a pool of mediocre & bottom-rung teams (only two, CLE & MEM, are playoff-bound) turn-out to be better than Nellie's? That's just a poor choice!
