Giants Fan Kills Dodgers Fan, Police Say

LOS ANGELES - A Los Angeles Dodgers (news) fan was shot and killed by a San Francisco Giants (news) fan following a dispute in the parking lot after a game, police said.

Mark Antenorcruz, 25, of Covina, was shot once in the upper body about 10 p.m. Friday as he headed for his car, police and county coroner's Lt. Gary Kellerman said. He was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The National League (news) West champion Giants had just won 6-4 Friday night and people were leaving Dodger Stadium when a group of San Francisco fans jeered Antenorcruz, who may have given a reply, police said.

The gunman fled after the shooting. Police detectives searched the 16,000-car parking lot in the stadium complex north of downtown for hours but made no arrests. Authorities did not immediately release a description of a suspect or his car.

Neither baseball team commented on the deadly shooting.

The Giants clinched the National League West on Wednesday. Friday's loss, meanwhile, dropped the Dodgers three games behind Philadelphia for the National League wild card slot.

L.A. Police Arrest Three in Baseball Killing

Updated 2:01 PM ET September 20, 2003

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Three people have been arrested in connection with the shooting death of a Los Angeles baseball fan after a dispute in the Dodger Stadium parking lot following the game.

Mark Antenorcruz, 25, of Covina, Calif., died shortly before midnight Friday after being shot in the chest as he headed to his car after the Giants beat the Dodgers.

Two men and a woman, were taken into custody after a witness to the shooting followed the suspects' white SUV from the parking lot to get the license number for police, Los Angeles Police Department spokeswoman Lucy Diaz said.

"Fortunately, the witness, a passing motorist, followed the car and reported the information to us," said Diaz. She called the witness's actions "courageous."

Though local media has reported the fracas erupted over team loyalty, Diaz said the cause of the dispute was still under investigation.

"We have no idea of what the motive might be," she said. "What we do know is that there was some sort of dispute."

The death was the second this week at a California baseball stadium. On Wednesday, an apparently drunk baseball fan died after falling from a walkway at the Giants home field, Pacific Bell Park.

The Giants won the National League West division on Wednesday, guaranteeing the team an appearance in the postseason. The Dodgers are still vying for a playoff berth.

At least there are some, like the witness - still willing to do the right thing.
Although that was very dangerous if they had been spotted.

Police: Baseball fan shot after game

(09-20) 18:00 PDT LOS ANGELES (AP) --

A sister and brother were being held Saturday in the death of a man shot in a parking lot dispute after a Dodgers loss to the San Francisco Giants.

Mark Antenorcruz, 25, of Covina, was shot once in the upper body Friday night as he headed for his car. The shooting at Dodger Stadium followed an argument over the teams, though it was unclear who the victim and the suspects were rooting for, police said.

"It's clear the argument was in some way related to the game," Deputy Chief Gary Brennan said. Detectives were still investigating the details of the fight, but alcohol appeared to have been a factor, he said.

Detectives were searching for a third suspect, a 17-year-old boy from South Gate, Brennan said.

The woman, described as in her 30s, and her 22-year-old brother were arrested for investigation of murder. Their names were not released.

On Saturday, police searched the woman's home in unincorporated county territory about 25 miles east of Los Angeles and recovered a .25-caliber semiautomatic firearm, which they believe was the murder weapon, Brennan said.

Brennan said Antenocruz got into an argument with three people, two men and one woman, and that one of the male suspects went to his car, pulled out a gun and fired. The group then drove off.

Antenorcruz's brother followed the car as far as he could, then told a passing driver about the shooting. The driver pursued the suspects' vehicle and wrote down its license plate number, which police used to track down and arrest the suspects.

Initially the woman, her husband and her 22-year-old brother were arrested, but the husband was released after witnesses said he was not involved in the shooting. Brennan said the husband was cooperating with police.

On Saturday, Dodger spokesman Derrick Hall expressed his condolences to the family of the victim.

"On behalf of the Los Angeles Dodgers, I'd like to say how sad we are by the tragic incident," Hall said.

Hall said the stadium remains a safe and "family friendly" site. He noted that alcohol is not served after the 7th inning, and that both private security and Los Angeles police officers patrol the parking lot. He said they responded to the shooting within seconds.

Brennan said security would be beefed up Saturday night for the second game of a three-game set between the two teams. He described Dodger stadium as a safe place and said the shooting was the first he could recall there.

The Giants clinched the NL West on Wednesday. Friday's loss, meanwhile, dropped the Dodgers three games behind Philadelphia in the NL wild-card race.

The Giants did not immediately return a call for comment Saturday afternoon.
