SF Josh Howard (8.6 ppg, 5.5 rpg, 1.5 apg in 23.7 minutes)
Change in team outlook: +5.5 ppg, +2.4 rpg, and +2.5 apg.

Dallas trades: PF Christian Laettner (5.9 ppg, 4.8 rpg, 1.9 apg in 20.5 minutes)

Change in team outlook: -5.5 ppg, -2.4 rpg, and -2.5 apg.

TRADE ACCEPTED

Due to Memphis and Dallas being over the cap, the 15% trade rule is invoked. Memphis and Dallas had to be no more than 115% plus $100,000 of the salary given out for the trade to be accepted, which did happen here. This trade satisfies the provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Dallas does it to get more athletic and shore up the center position with two more young guys. Losing Howard hurts, but we have enough strength at the 2/3 and if Swift ever reaches his potential it'll be worthwhile.

Memphis saves some money by trading the smaller expiring contract of Outlaw for that of Laettner. They seem to have given up on Tsakalides and wouldn't have signed Cardinal if they still had a use for Outlaw. Swift is a restricted free agent they might lose anyway. Bradley and Laettner are some help in the center. Delk doesn't help them, probably, but Howard is a younger, more athletic James Posey.

Default RE:Dallas--Memphis trade

Memphis is in the same predicament as Dallas--got tot trim the roster more than the salary cap at this point. I think both teams will be looking to trade 2for1 or 3for1 deals where they only take back one player when adding role players through trades.

When you watch Howard play you think of the comparisons to Shawn Marion and James Posey and you just hope Dallas hangs on to him a little while longer and see how he progresses this year. He is certainly cheaper than either Posey or Marion at this point in their respective careers.
