ARLINGTON, Texas -- Texas Rangers catcher Ivan Rodriguez has been cleared to begin a rehab assignment from the back injury that has kept him out since April 15.

Rodriguez

Rodriguez was examined by team back specialist Dr. Drew Dossett on Tuesday night, and Dossett gave the 10-time All-Star the OK to report to Port Charlotte, Fla., for extended spring training on Thursday and Friday.

Rodriguez will start by playing designated hitter and catching batting practice, and if he experiences no problems, he'll be assigned to the team's Florida State League team in Port Charlotte for a five-game assignment. The team said he'll catch four games and DH in a fifth.

After playing in 12 games, Rodriguez suffered a herniated disk in his back in mid-April.

Good, I would like to get him playing before we try to convince him he needs to be traded.

I agree. I guess I am in the minority, but I hope the Rangers trade him now while they can get value for him. Of course he must stay healthy and produce to get to that point.

of course it would be nice to unload him now.
but right now, i think his value might be down a bit because of his rash of injuries...the best time to trade him would have been last year about midway through the season

True, but I have heard rumblings that the Yanks might be interested in Pudge and may include Posada in the offer. I think the market is there. The main thing that kills us right now is the labor uncertainty.

Man did we need that or what? Too bad the teams pitching sucks so bad we blew it 13-7. What is up with Chan Ho Park? It looks like batting practice.
