Anaheim 21, Cleveland 2
AP Recap

CLEVELAND (TICKER) -- The Anaheim Angels finally gave Ramon Ortiz some run support.

Troy Glaus drove in five runs and Jeff DaVanon added four RBI as the Angels coasted to a 21-2 rout of the reeling Cleveland Indians.

Anaheim scored just three runs in the last three starts by Ortiz (2-3), who gave up one run and six hits in seven innings with two walks and four strikeouts. Against Cleveland, the Angels produced their biggest output since scoring 24 runs against Toronto on August 25, 1979.

"Unfortunately, (Ortiz) has been on the short end of a couple of games," Glaus said. "He pitched a great game, don't take anything away from him."

"Tonight they gave me a lot of runs," Ortiz said. "They gave me a lot of runs, but I didn't change my game plan. I just wanted to move the ball in and out. With 21 runs, you can pitch. It's nice to have that. I wish I could have 21 runs every night."

Glaus opened the scoring in the first inning with a two-out solo homer off C.C. Sabathia and added a bases-loaded single in the third that put Anaheim ahead for good, 3-1. The third baseman capped his night with another bases-loaded single in a 10-run eighth.

"It was just one of those nights," Glaus said. "You can't count on this every night. We put some good swings on the ball. Whether that was because (Cleveland's pitchers) were missing their spots or not, I don't know."

DaVanon entered in the eighth as a pinch hitter for Garret Anderson and belted a three-run homer off Chad Paronto, then capped the scoring with an RBI single in the ninth.

"I faced him in the Dominican (Republic), so I knew somewhat what he was going to throw," DaVanon said. "It's nice to get hits anytime. I was just happy to contribute."

Sabathia (2-3) allowed six runs and seven hits in five innings. He walked four and struck out two as the Indians lost for the 12th time in 14 games after starting the season 11-1.

"There's no excuse for what happened," said Sabathia, who has surrendered 19 runs in his last three starts. "I didn't make pitches when I needed to."

Anaheim sent 14 men to the plate in the eighth. Darin Erstad started the inning with his first homer of the season off Mark Wohlers, making it 10-1.

Glaus singled and Tim Salmon was hit by a pitch one out later before Ben Molina singled in Glaus. After a wild pitch put two runners into scoring position, Scott Spiezio continued the damage with a two-run single.

"When you're not doing good, you get frustrated," Ersatd said. "We know we can hit and score runs. We are confident in ourselves."

After Brad Fullmer lined to right, the Angels loaded the bases and Glaus singled home Jose Nieves and David Eckstein before DaVanon homered.

"If we are ever going to bottom out, we bottomed out tonight," Indians manager Charlie Manuel said. "I don't know what I can say. You guys saw it."

Eckstein gave the Angels a 20-1 lead with an RBI single, three batters before DaVanon's run-scoring base hit.

"We got some key hits with runners in scoring position," Anaheim manager Mike Scioscia said. "Of course, that is overlooked at the end of the game. But it is good to jump out to a lead."

Jim Thome was responsible for the Indians' first run with a solo homer in the second inning, his ninth of the season.

Holy crap. I come back and see this score...whoa. I had no news papers or tv on my business trip. And the Spurs lost too? Wow.
