Congrats, Dirk. But it was tainted.

Wonder how Terry would have fared in the finals if Dirk's post-:00 shot hadn't been allowed?

I have no clue.

Honestly, I didn't think Dirk could win, his shot is slow compared to the others. I thought Terry had it, who knows who would have won had Dirk's last shot not counted and Terry made it to the finals.

HE'S DONE IT, HE'S DONE IT!!!

Congrats. Dirk's shot is a thing of beauty.

Anyone else heard Barkley talk about Dirk's athleticism??? And he admitted the Auburn story...

the surprise was that Mark Cuban would wear a headset and sit in the stands yelling non-stop.

the surprise was that Mark Cuban wasn't wearing any pants in the stands. just boxers and high black busines socks, while wearing a headset for some reason and yelling non-stop and moving his eyes upwards as if having an orgasm

My guess is that if they both had made the finals, one guy was going to "give it" to the other...by shooting lefthanded. Or maybe underhanded.

I missed the surprise that Terry's been talking about all week too.

Happy Dirk won but he shouldn't have advanced to the 2nd round.

Hehe, he said taint.

I really thought terry would beat him. It almost looks like Dirk preserved himself until the final round, as he had said his arms were heavy in the other 2 finals he was in.

Barkley can say all he wants about Ray-Ray's pretty stroke (I don't necessarily disagree), but there is nothing prettier than the way the twine just wrinkles when Dirk's shot falls through. His first-rack threes, in both rounds, were poetic.

Man, I wish I knew how to find GMC's seminal post describing Dirk's jumper. Perhaps I will attempt the search function and see how strong it is...

Found it! Here is our own, unimitable GMC describing the thing of beauty that is Dirk's jumpshot:

Quote:

A lot of the truly unique instrumentalists, when you watch the way their hands move (even when they're playing slower passages that any intermediate player could handle), it just doesn't look normal, and in some cases even seems thoroughly ineffecient - but the results are unarguable. It's the same with Dirk. You watch him put the ball on the floor and begin to execute his moves and half the time you have absolutely no idea how he's going to manage to tie it all together, but somehow at the end of it all he squares himself up, the arm extends with perfect trajectory and acceleration, and at the end of a seemingly weightless epoch of inevitability, crafted more as an indulgence of the art than of the science of physics, the ball drops through the net with a gentle caress and a whispered promise that this meeting of leather and twine will not be the last.
Genius. Thanks, G.

Mark Cuban was commentating for the German pay tv channel "Premiere". He went nuts... But I listened to the TNT crew more of the time.

Dirk had only 12 in the first round through 24 balls. As he picked up the last ball, one worth two points, time was running out. Indeed, time ran out before the shot left his hands.

The shot found the bottom of the net, and it was counted good. (Then again, I don't know the rules for this contest. Perhaps if the ball is out of the rack the shot is legitimate?)

At any rate, if the shot had been called late, then Terry would have advanced with his 13 points.

Da' Scoreboard. I don't know the rules either, obviously was in his hands when the buzzer went off. Luckily went in.

Nice job dirkster.

was I the only one that cracked up after Charles Barkely said "they must have the Super Bowl refs out there" when they let Dirk's late shot ride?

seriously, when he's not criticizing the Mavs (and he did nothing but praise them and Dirk tonight), this guy is freakin hilarious

Honestly, I like him

Anybody know what was up with Josh Smith placing that piece of tape about a full foot infront of the free throw line and then not dunking from it? He had everyone standing up and holding their breaths just to let them down.

Kenny Smith: "If he dunks from there I'm leaving the building. I'm getting up and walking out of the building!"
Barkley: "If he makes this dunk it'll be crazy. Crazier than Cheney finding a new hunting partner!"

That was among the most worthy-of-ridicule things I have ever seen. When you sell it that big (a foot, or even two, past the foul stripe), you ought to at least make a run at it. The run at it that involved a step past the free-throw line was ashamedly underwhelming.

What in the world was he thinking?

It actually bothered me that Barkley was being so nice to Dirk & JT. It was really uncomfortable, I couldn't even enjoy it. I was like, whoa. What's going on? But yea for Dirk, that was excellent. Would love to know what exactly the surprise was.

That was pretty weak by Josh Smith, very disappointing, he should have been a bit more conservative.

Anyway, Barkley was very complimentary of Dirk, which surprised me...... because I thought the TV was on mute, as it usually is when fatso is talking. Truth be told, Charles is funny, I saw him a few days ago on the Daily Show with Jon Stewart on Comedy Central and he was quite funny. I may be starting to get Charles Barkley.....

I interpreted from an article I read that the suprise was that if one made it and the other didn't the one that didn't would heckle the other contestants in the finals.

Pretty silly really!

Everybody was so hung on the mark that nobody realized how impressive Josh Smith's dunk was. He dunked from the FT line (yea I know that his heel was on the line but Dr. J's whole foot was in front of it) with two hands! I don't think that's ever been done in the history of the dunk contest.

Sure he did a horrible job of managing expectations but I'm a little suprised at how the dunk he actually executed is being minimized.

Not sure if your saying that tounge in cheek but I don't think that dunk in the commercial is legit.

As far as Smith's dunk, like I said, I haven't seen anyone in that contest dunk from the FT line with two hands.
