Default Waived Players

Link to Article

If Finley is waived, which by all accounts make it seem like a done deal...who out there do the Mavs go after.

Sam Smith (who is #2 on the idiot list behind Vescey) mentions the following players as being possibly waived:

Finley
Houston
Webber
Rose
Jones
Christie
Ratliff
LaFrentz

If Christie didn't come with EXCESS BAGGAGE (no pun intended) I love to see his perimeter defense in Dallas next year..
Anybody else worth going after?

Ratliff -- would be a descent pickup.

I might even look to Webber.

Most of it depends on where they are going with the offense next season. I think Ratliff is the better defender, so he would probably be the first choice.

I have serious questions about Houston's knee, but otherwise you can't go wrong with that kind of shooting off the bench. Rose might be worth taking a look at. He's the most capable distributor of those mentioned. Among the swing's listed, though, Eddie Jones would definitely be my first choice; best 2-way player out of the bunch. I'd be quite happy with either Ratliff or Raef as a frontcourt addition.

Aren't the raptors below the luxary tax threshold? If so why would they wave Rose?

Interesting question.

Right now they have 7 players under contract for next season, with $44 million committed. It'll be 8 players and $47.3 million or so if Aaron Williams exercises his player option of $3.3 million (my bet is that he doesn't). That means that they have to fill 6 slots on their roster. Now, they're not likely to pay any of those people big money, but they've got to pay them something. How much will determine whether they are in luxury tax territory or not. Still, they're not likely to be exposed to dollar-for-dollar taxation on Rose's contract, so perhaps calling him a likely Waivee (TM) is premature.

Jones is a good deal. He plays great defense and can shoot very well. If we give up finely, he will be the perfect replacement. (Finley will replace him in Miami)

Christie is useless because we already have Daniels and Josh. (Won't get playing time)

Theo will also be a great addition.

He barely played this year in Orlando. Jones is a better prospect and better shooter. I never thought I will ever say this, but we have enough defense for the 2/3 position. And Jones is really capable to be good on defense and offense.

Add Brian Grant to the list of players likely to be waived. He could be at least as useful as Kurt Thomas.

Wonderful post. Nevermind that Christie is one of the best perimeter defenders in the league, can shoot the three very well, and a very good passer which would help our ball movement problem... He's pussy-whipped, forget him.

You know a really bad team like the Atlanta Hawks who are tremendously under the cap could theoretically sign 4 or 5 of these players to minimum deals and field a very good team on the other guys dime.

Put Finley, Rose, Webber, Ratliff, Christie and LaFrentz on the Hawks and you've got something. Not only would the other owners be footing the bill but I am sure the Hawks could be competitive and actually draw some fans to the arena. Their profit margin would soar while teams like the Mavs and Knicks lose their asses. This crap is so stupid that it is hilarious. A bunch of wealthy idiots getting reamed out of their money and not even realizing they are getting slammed in the wrong place. This league should have went with a hard cap and non-guaranteed contracts like the NFL. All this crap would have been avoided. Got to save those GD owners from their own stupidity.

The guys that are getting waived want a championship. The will never go to Atlanta especially if it was for the minimum. Finley might settle going to Miami for the min to win a ring. Atlanta does not have that appeal.

I say waive Finley and get Eddie Jones.

Actually, I was just making an observation or an example out of Atlanta. Any team under the cap could actually take advantage of this. Do you think that Rose and Webber wouldn't want to play together. A team could start right there. Christie probably would want to play with Webber again. Hmmm. Somebody like LaFrentz or Ratliff could then be brought on board using the other guys names as bait. Snowball effect in action. Really, how many suitors do you think LaFrentz would have. Alan Houston? These guys all would have something to prove and are probably arrogant enough to think they could win a championship together.

Team subtractions:
Michael Finley (wire)
Shawn Bradley (retirement)
Darrel Armstrong (FA)
Alan Henderson (FA)
Marquis Daniels (S/T)

Additions:
Reggie Evans (S/T)
Eddie Jones (wire)
Dwayne Jones (UDR)
Keith Langford (UDR)

New lineup
Dampier/D. Jones/Pavel Podkolzine/M'Benga
Nowitzki/KVH/Reggie Evans
Howard/Reggie Evans
Stackhouse/Eddie Jones
Jason Terry/Devin Harris/Keith Langford

I like that lineup there. Too bad Evans will stay where he is, and we dont have the right pieces for a S/t
