Definitely looks bad, but I think it looks even worse if the league is trading the franchise player from a team it's supposedly trying to sell to one of the league's 2-3 historic big-money franchises.

Don't know. I guess with CP3 on the roster the team can be sold more easily, but on the other hand: He obviously should be gone by now and will be gone next summer. So what kind of difference does it really make?

But in my eyes it's legitimate for the owners to veto, because they own the team. It's just that simple. So the Hornets will just lose their star next summer without getting anything unless the new owner arrives before the trade deadline and decides to deal him (to the Lakers )

The NBA looks pathetic either way, lose/lose for the league. NY's best hope is he isn't traded by the deadline.... then they may get him.

If Paul will soon be out of New Orleans no matter what, then this may have been as good a deal as they could have made for him.

This is what happens when the owners do not have the team's best interest in mind.

Why should they? They technically own the team and can do whatever they want with it as long as 15 of 29 vote for it.

The league should not own the Hornets in the first place.

Exactly. But now it's hard to complain in my eyes.

Besides: Deal was not bad for New Orleans, but Houston fans should thank Stern for not letting this happen. Hollinger does his occasional brainfart in saying that Rockets would have been Top-Seed material with Nene and Gasol. You gotta be kidding me.

Paul seems to be willing to get this one to the court. I'm intrigued if the pieces in Houston and L.A. are still there by the time they got it all sorted out

It looks like New Orleans has a decent GM for naught. Perhaps the Rockets should hire him.

Funniest part of this whole mess is still that the Rockets were going to give up all those guys for just Gasol.

They seem to be the winners in all of this.

What the hell is going on btw? The owners blocked a trade? This has to be unprecedented.

the reports say that THE OWNERS DIDNT BLOCK IT. They complained to Stern and he blocked it. You have to be able to o distinguish between "the league" and each individual owner and..idk it just get complicated. But LOL at the Hornets when Paul shows up at CAMP tomorrow.

You'd have to think they're still gonna trade Paul, just not to the Lakers. Not saying that's right, but I bet the league allows the next one.

With all this crazyness and a shortened season, I could see a team like Portland or the Clippers winning the Championship.

Just some random team that gets lucky, IDK.

I'm actually happy Stern blocked this trade to me it looked as if the NBA was more playing favoritism with it's favorite big market team.

This mess of a trade or lack of it, as fascinating as it is, has "bush league" written all over it. Three teams agreed on a trade and the NBA--after confirming to GMs across the league that a) Demps has the authority to get deals done and b) Paul is a tradeable player--simply kills it due to pressure from the owners or for whatever bad reason.

The proposed trade looked pretty damn good for New Orleans and would have given them a chance to build a decent team even without Paul that could be interesting to their fan base and potential new owners alike.

Paul will leave New Orleans as early as next summer. By him becoming a free agent, they'll get nothing in return and probably turn into a mediocre team with even less support from an already weak market. I can hardly see how refusing this trade to go down will help the franchise in any way. Instead, it could very well make the team even less desireable to support and/or buy.

On top of that, seeing Stern basically force Paul to stay in New Orleans doesn't exactly feel right. One could argue it's an abuse of power.

Two of the five guys in ESPN's 5-on-5 today said the Rockets were getting the best end of the nixed trade. That is absolutely bonkers.

Quote:
By blocking the Hornets’ trade that would have sent Chris Paul to the Lakers and netted Lamar Odom, Luis Scola, Kevin Martin, Goran Dragic, and a 2012 first-round pick from the Rockets in return, commissioner David Stern may have cost Chris Paul millions in guaranteed money.

"If Chris Paul doesn't get traded," said one source close to the Paul talks, "and if he ends up losing $30 million or $40 million in free agency because he wants to sign with someone else, I think he might have the biggest lawsuit the league has ever seen."
Under the terms of the new collective bargaining agreement, Paul can opt out of his contract next summer and sign a four-year, $74 million deal with a new team.

But in a sign-and-trade arrangement – like the Hornets’ proposed trade with the Lakers and Rockets – Paul could opt out and re-sign for five years, $100 million.
Shit just got real.

Paul dont wanna sign the extension with his old team because he wanna go to a team of his choice but wanna have the maximum money that Stern just "stole" from him.

Nothing new here. CP3 has always been a punk ass. While I don't think I would have made the same decision as Stern here, all this hand-wringing over it is absolutely hilarious.

Can't remember where I saw it now, I think on espn's twitter ticker, but somebody pointed out that the language Stern used in discussing his revocation of the trade left open the possibility that some tweaks might be enough to secure league approval. If that's the case, my first thought goes to Okafor. If you owned the Hornets and were faced with losing your franchise player, wouldn't you want to clear that contract off your books in the process?

Although the media seems to be getting too much up in arms about Stern's decision, I agree with what appears to be the general consensus. This trade should have happened and the reasons being offered as to why it didn't go down are questionable, to say the least.

New Orleans, given that Paul is about to leave anyway, would have assembled a decent group of players that's more talented than what Denver got earlier this year for Melo. The Lakers would've gotten the best player in the deal while sacrificing two capable and accomplished guys. As far as Houston is concerned, one could argue that Pau and a free agent like Nene, who could have received a nice offer from Houston due to the newfound cap space, are a better duo than Scola and Martin.

All three teams will have to deal with a mess on their hands. Obviously, an owner like Dan Gilbert couldn't care less, yet the NBA has some 'splaining to do. On what grounds can the league veto a reasonable trade between three teams? Because it's the Lakers that would get the best player in the deal from the league-owned Hornets and some owners scream bloody murder? It might indeed be in the best interest of the NBA to not let another super team emerge at the expense of the sought-after competitive balance. However, reaching that goal in this particular fashion with Stern going a little nuts and overruling an agreement between the teams feels like a Pyrrhic victory that's already caused a huge backlash and brought the NBA way too many pro wrestling references.

This decision does have the stench of arbitrariness all over it.

funny.

Okafor is about as good a rebounder as Chandler and a better shot blocker in terms of actual shots blocked. I still think Chandler's numbers belie the fact that he changed a way higher number of shots than the average center, though.

Chandler
65.4% eFG
35 reb rating
4.7 block rating

Okafor
57.3% eFG
33 reb rating
7.0 block rating

all pipe dreams though. We'd have to trade 12mill in salary and pony up 3yrs/40mill (less than 4/60 that Chandler got but not much in the next three) to get him so its pretty much just a dream.

Scola has 4/40 left and is almost 32. Okafor has 3/40 and is 29.

So the Hornets dump a "bad contract" to receive a worse player on a worse contract?
