Ratings up for Dampier
Ratings up for Dampier
Center's big strides documented by coach's grading system
By EDDIE SEFKO / The Dallas Morning News
It was obvious last season that Erick Dampier was not carrying his share of the load for the Mavericks.
Coach Avery Johnson knew it better than anybody. And he had Dampier's ineffectiveness chronicled more than anybody knew.
"We have this rating that we keep, and he was rated in the 100s last year with this particular rating," Johnson said. "It takes a lot of things into account. It's not a flawless rating. But it's something we use as a tool. Out of the 400 players in the NBA, he was in the high 100s.
"Now, he's in the top 50. It shows the progression of what he means [to us]. Consequently, we've played some decent basketball."
Dampier's resurgence coincided with Johnson sending him to the second unit 17 games ago. When he made that move, the coach said he expected the 6-11 center to be a beast off the bench.
Dampier has averaged more than nine rebounds per game since going to the bench. And he's done so in 22 minutes per game. That average per 48 minutes would be at the top of the league.
Ergo, his jump in Johnson's ratings system.
Talking the talk: Sam Cassell led the Clippers into American Airlines Center on Tuesday, and he did so with his mouth, as always. Guard Jason Terry said Cassell has taken over for Gary Payton as the most outrageous talker on the court during games.
"He's talking from warm-ups on," Terry said.
Johnson said he had a couple of unique memories of Cassell from Johnson's playing days.
"It's amazing when you're playing against somebody and they're asking about your wife's cooking during the game," he said. "He'll say, 'How's momma doing? She cook you some gumbo recently?' I'm like, 'Man, we're in the fourth quarter of a game. I don't want to talk about gumbo, and I don't want to talk about my wife, much as I love both of them.' "
Briefly: Johnson on the NBA possibly putting the 2008 All-Star Game in his hometown of New Orleans: "I don't think words could describe what that could do for the city. The city has been ravaged. They need some good news. Tourism is a big part of their whole economic structure. Hopefully they can get it pushed through really soon so people can start making plans for it." ... Don Nelson said on a radio show from Maui that he believes the Mavericks have a legitimate chance to make the NBA Finals this season. However, he added: "I don't think anybody is beating Detroit this year." ... The Mavericks ran radio commercials about the availability of tickets for Tuesday's game, a rarity during their 180-game sellout streak, which was extended Tuesday. The glut of home games in February has required some extra promotion to alert fans that tickets remain for certain games.

Wow, it looks like the Star-Telegram got this totally wrong. They wrote:
"Dampier slipping
In the Mavs' rating system, center Erick Dampier was in the high 100s last season. This season, he's in the 50s."
They must have thought this was a statistical ranking, with 100 being better than 50. This article makes it clear that they mean that this is a league-wide ranking, with 1 being the highest.

Yuck. Cassell is old and makes some TERRIBLE decisions offensively. Also, he has Finley syndrome. He never drives to the hoop.

Haha, terrible descissions...
I've been watching a lot of his games during the last 3 years, and I always liked what I saw.
But I guess his bad descissions are the reason the Clippers are so much imrpoved this season...

How were those two late jumpers last night that cost the Clippers the game? I have watched many games were Sam wants to take the last or biggest shot and he just can't make it. Too old.

How about those two threepointers he hit against the Knicks lately... They were down one and Cassel did it for the Clippers. How about the game before the Knicks game, against Toronto he sank three crucial shots in a row, two threepointers and one half-distance shot.

Nothing against Nellie, but I'm glad we have a coach who believes in his team. Avery is certainly a breath of fresh air.

Referring to the Don nelson comment, alot of people don't give the mavs respect.
Especially when it comes to playin detroit. They forget who stopped the 13-0 start at the beggining of the season beating them by 37 points.
Mabye we had to beat them by 45?

To play Devil's advocate here.... they were on the 2nd night of a back to back... much like we were when Denver beat us... I don't think because of that game Denver feels great about their chances in a playoff series against us.
What I'm trying to say here is, you can't take that 1 game and win a 7 game series. It will be tough.

Detroit is a LOAD man. The mavs (I'm sure they do) better have a dang healthy dose of respect but you know what.
It just don't matter. Mavs have a much bigger task in front of them than Detroit. Memphis tommorrow...Then Toronto..then Philedelphia ...then THE SQUIRTS...
They take care of that little bit of business, then it will be Charlotte...etc..
All of the pick the team, who you play right now is complete talk-show fodder and irrelevant except to us fans. Nelson however can kiss my ass.
Mavs are every bit as good as Detroit/Squirts. Detroit I don't worry at all about because we have to get there first. But Nelson could easily be diplomatic about it but wanted to play around.
