Armstrong returning?
Pacers To Release Armstrong
September 29, 2007 - 10:00 am
Indianapolis Star -
After failing to work out a trade with Dallas or Golden State, the Pacers are expected to release veteran point guard Darrell Armstrong on Monday, a person with knowledge of the situation said Friday night.
Armstrong is expected to sign with the Mavericks after he's released, the person said.
Armstrong, who has a non-guaranteed contract with Indiana, would have been the odd man out with the Pacers because Travis Diener is penciled in as starter Jamaal Tinsley's backup. Andre Owens and Marquis Daniels can also play the position.

As a coach? We have no room on our roster!

Doesnt he still take up a roster slot if he's a player-coach?

I think so, since hes still considered a player. But don't take my word on that.

...So after an uneventful offseason, the week before training camp, we sign a center to a non-guaranteed contract, we hire a new assistant coach, make a trade, and bring in a point guard. THAT'S GOOD THINKIN' DONNAY!

If we bring him in, there's no doubt that we're about to make a big trade...
I can't imagine signing all these new players, having them fight for roster spots in training camp, then releasing a bunch of them while getting NOTHING in return... We have one or two quality players that we could trade and enough decent filler (at every position) to meet any lesser need that most teams in the NBA might have... I have no idea who we'd go after or who we'd give up in return, but I'm sure the Mav's front office already has a plan cracked up...
Worst case scenario: we have a lot of competition for roster spots, which should make for a very solid bench...
Best case scenario: we trade for a star (or semi-star) to round out our starters...
Also, would DA make a good backup PG to Devin? This seems to be the biggest factor in a possible Jason Terry trade (since he's the only player that would have any value in pursuing another starter)... This offseason just got interesting...

it's hard to get a JO deal to work salary-wise. Maybe Terry, Damp, Ager for JO, but why would Indiana do that?

There is no big trade in the works, if the mavs didnt do something big during the offseason, there not going to blow it up 3 days before training camp

No way we bring in DA to be on the roster. The only way for DA to come is .... you guessed it .... another assisant coach!

We need fewer point guard assistant coaches and a few more big men coaches imo. I was glad we got rid of mokeski however.

Nobody said we were going to blow up the team - but what about trading some bench players for a solid starting 2-guard (or something along those lines)?
Also, given the fact that 80% of our off-season moves have come in the last week, why would it be impossible to think that some kind of trade could take place right before training camp?

I was thinking something smaller, like AK-47 or a player around his quality...
If we were going to make a big move like JO, then it would have already happened...

The return of the SUPER SPARE!!! Color me giddy!
I hope he does return as a player. I think we missed his mentorship last year. Barea and Harris will benefit from playing with the cagey old vet.
As for big trades, there's no reason to think it's too late for them. It's not uncommon to see big-ish deal at this time. Wasn't the trade for Walker very close to the start of training camp, for example?

Or better yet, would he be the heir to Avery's throne one day in the future when Avery gets all his Trophies and retires? Kinda like the Don and AJ situation to me.

Mmmmmm why? As a coach okay. As a player.....why? Don't we already have 218 guards on our roster? Isn't Barea capable of getting scrap minutes as the 3rd PG? The only reason to bring DA on as a player is if we are indeed moving a PG in a trade which I don't think is going to happen. The issue isn't PG or SG or SF....it's PF/C.
Dumbfounded......

Maybe we're looking at a trade with Cleveland for Pavlovic and Varejao for Terry, Ager, MBenga and maybe another spare or so.
Cleveland needs to do something, and bringing in Armstrong and Sampson makes the most sense if Terry and MBenga are going out.
Unfortunately, when you're dealing with two free agents, it's almost impossible to check the salaries to see if they can match.

Cleveland signed Devin Brown today. Also traded David Wesley to the Hornets for Cedric Simmons. They still need more moves but they've finally done something.

I hope the Mavs do sign D.A. as a coach
Surrounding your players with a high energy, high optimism, great locker room guy is always a great idea.

IMO all thos ethat are saying Terry and Whoever for Pavlovic and or AV....are really crazy. Because IMO Both of those players combined are not worth as much as Terry especially to this team so I dont see any way tht trade would be good.

I work some graveyard shifts at a hospital
Anyway, yeah trading Terry for something may be a good thing, but trading him for pure trash? Even though he's overpaid he's still worth something.

I swear I thought the title of this thread said "Armstrong retiring?"... which is probably what it should be called.

looks like the Nets will pick him up off the waiver wire as a player, so he won't clear waivers to be a coach here.
