Cuban: Time for Mavs to shape up
Cuban: Time for Mavs to shape up
Conditioning could be holding Dallas back late in games
02:04 AM CST on Friday, November 10, 2006
By EDDIE SEFKO / The Dallas Morning News
PHOENIX – The Mavericks have a gas problem, according to owner Mark Cuban.
No, not that kind of gas. The kind you run out of.
A problematic training camp led to the Mavericks' early-season woes going into Thursday's meeting with Phoenix. The inability to get players on the court together and in prime game shape has been obvious to Cuban.
"Other than the one game in Houston, every game was right there for us to take with five minutes to go," Cuban said. "And when the other teams have something left in the tank and you don't, it's obviously tough. That's something that can and will be fixed as guys play more games."
Coach Avery Johnson has seen his team play well early in some games, including Wednesday night at the Clippers, when they were up by 11 after the first quarter.
Fatigue, however, is only one of the many problems he sees.
"Offensively, we got bogged down a little bit," Johnson said. "It's just amazing how bad our spacing is. We're just not getting to our spots quick enough, especially against double teams."
A bad precedent? Johnson said he was disappointed with the reported $18.5 million settlement NBA commissioner David Stern arbitrated between the New York Knicks and their former coach Larry Brown.
Brown was due about $40 million under terms of his contract, but the league decided the matter and reduced the payment.
"If the numbers are accurate – which I don't know that – and Coach Brown did not violate any part of his contract ... I would be very disappointed with that, absolutely," said Johnson, who signed a five-year, $20 million deal last month. "My whole thing is, whether it's coaching or players or any business, if you have a contract and the contract is not violated by some terms in the contract, then you should be paid."
Former Mavericks coach Don Nelson is headed down a similar road with Cuban. Nelson plans to take Cuban to arbitration over $6.6 million in deferred money he says he is owed from the Ross Perot Jr. ownership.
Cuban would not comment specifically on Brown's settlement.
"David is the matchmaker," said Cuban, who wore a blue T-shirt to Thursday's game with WWDD (What Would David Do?) on the front where it usually has MFFL (Mavs Fan For Life).
"He's able to take who you never think would come to compromise and put together amazing compromises. Who knew that Larry Brown, David Stern and Cablevision [the Knicks' owner] would be the peanut butter and chocolate of 2006. But that's what you learn at David Stern University. The Epicurean department is amazing."
Johnson, by the way, said it would not surprise him to see Brown coaching in the NBA again.
Briefly: The Mavericks stayed in Arizona after Thursday's game and will practice before flying to Portland, where they play Sunday. ... The Suns had some fun with the Mavericks' unveiling of the Western Conference championship banner. They ran a video of the banner cover getting stuck and had snippets of their mascot, the Gorilla, hiding in the rafters as the instigator of the failed unveiling.

Dude, quit trolling. They did fine tonight, it's just a matter of them getting worked into the system.

All your posts have been negative with no real reason. You are wanting undrafted Euro players over solid current Mavs, and it doesn't make sense. Plus, you can state how you feel in one posts, without posting two threads and 8 posts of the same type of negative thing.

You have to love cubes for things like that he has great ways of protest. Remember the mav logo dress jacket from last year.

I don't know if you are a troll or not, time will tell, but you sure are a waste of time. Poste something with some thought or quit spitting up on the board.

Cuban is an attention whore. I'm really getting tired of his stupid, sarcastic jabs against Stern.
Yes, we all realize what a dictator Stern is, Mark. Stop begging the dictator to send his goons after your team.
And grow up, while you're at it.

everyone loves to watch a train wreck, kg.
It just kinda sucks when your favorite team is tied to one of the trains.

So being grown up equals having lost all your sense for humor? Ok then...

During the unveiling and when it got stuck there was pretty tense moment when some smuck crawled out and uncovered it. Very bad visions of some poor guy falling to his death during the raising.

It has nothing to do with having a sense of humor.

as long as you're within one standard deviation of "hilarious," you're fine.

Everyone who said they hate Cuban and his humor is a damn dirty liar. He gets our team attention, he sticks it to the man, and he beats the hell out of a dull owner sitting in the skybox in a suit making no signs of passion about the game or his team.

Whenever Cuban confronts Stern with his humor, it is a two-humor swing.
There, I killed the joke.
