Deal Howard if possible...especially if he can bring in someone like Kaman.

sadly though, unlike a previous poster, I do not think Howard brings much in a trade.

it is because in essence it doesn't cost us anything. not against our cap. he'd in all likelihood walk for nothing and he's still a valuable player. we just need to surround him with a couple more finishers and a quick, defensive minded guard.

I've been wondering how the whole Cuban/Mrs. Harris thing played in NBA circles.

how about atlantas josh smith? We'd finally have a FINISHER who takes it to the rim and can finish a fast break. (deal jho)

Kidd/jjb
Smith/terry/wright
Arrest/smith (same as above)
Dirk/bass
Shaq (or chandler)/hollins

65 wins and a championship baby! Where am I wrong?

Yea everyone seems to think JET played poor this post season but this is just the real JET IMO. He's too one dimensional to overcome being the main focus of the opposing teams defense. I'd like to see him return but I think his trade value is at the highest it ever will be right now.

who stays and goes depends on who we sign or trade for. Antoine Wright is improving but is expendable if we get a Raja Bell, Anthony Parker type. i'd like to see Hollins back. J-Ho seems to have regained some of his mojo. I'd only deal him for a clear upgrade. With Damp/Stack to deal, our exceptions and our pick we should be all set. I don't see Bass back. Too expensive for 15 mins. a night.

2010 is a dream beyond a dream...this is our summer to make a massive move. The teams that are pining away for 2010 will wanna deal with us in a big way to get in even better position for that summer. Teams that are desperate to shed payroll will wanna deal with us because we have a lot of contracts that definitely help their situation. Cuban seems ready and able to absorb contracts.

I think Howard is going to have pretty good value this summer...much better than last year. People will want that contract and the player isn't half bad to go with it as well. The ankles will be a minor concern but they'll trust that the doctors did their job.

Going for Artest is great for two reasons: If you get him, that helps you big time. If you don't, you're driving the price up for Houston because they'll definitely want to keep him around. If you do that, you've helped hamper a team financially.

The problem with a guy like Hinrich, it's going to take value to get him...not salary dump. He is a valuable player to their team. The problem is he's basically a backup. I don't think we have pieces they necessarily want...but it's still a route we should pursue. I actually read that Minnesota and Chicago might be partners in a Hinrich for Mike Miller deal this summer.

Oh, and if we're talking to Atlanta...put me down for Joe Johnson before Josh Smith.

Oh ok, I didn't look at his whole team.

As far as Josh Smith, I was the main one saying that I wasn't going to happen last year. This year I'm not sure how comfortable the Hawks are paying him $48MM over the next four years. They may prefer the to pay Howard his $11MM and get better point production while having the flexibility to get rid of him if they choose. Remember this is an organization that always has an eye on the bottom line.

Smith didn't really improve this season and actually regressed in certain areas. He's a horrible outside shooter and while he does a decent job of getting to the line he made less than 60% of his FTA's this year.

I don't know that trading him for Howard makes us any better. If we trade Josh it needs to be in a package that brings back a star.

I think JET is one player that was really hurt by Denver's athleticism (sp?). The game was simply too fast for the JET.

Please explain how the Mavs get Artest anyways? MLE? Please.

He's NOT the shutdown defender on the wing his rep would lead you to believe. He's better than Josh, and Artest, Josh, & Kidd would be a salty 1-2-3, but he's not quick enough to go at a Wade, Kobe, Melo all night.

Not happening.

If Wright works on his lateral quickness he can be an elite defender

when JET is not making his threes, he may be the worst player in the NBA. With that being said, boy does he make some tough threes from time to time.

Anyways, I want us to keep Dirk/Bass/Singleton. Everyone else should be included in any potential moves that may (or may not) come up this summer IMHO.

We should get some real talent back if we included Terry/Howard/Stack/Damp/Bass/Barea in some trade packages.

Sign Artest, re-sign Kidd, trade for Stephen Jackson or Jamal Crawford or Monta Ellis, draft a backup PG, then fill in the rest of the bench.

Kidd
a Warriors' swingman
Artest
Dirk
Damp

you got toughness and defense right there.

or instead of going for a Warriors' swingman

Kidd
G. Wallace
Artest
Dirk
Damp

No. Josh Smith is 5 times the defender Howard is. He's not nearly as injury prone. His jumper is worse (although not too much) but he has an actual sense of shot selection and doesn't force shit. He gets the crowd involved with big dunks, gets easy buckets (instead of Jho ISO step back jumpers) and he's a way better passer.

So you're trading Josh for Artest? "Sign Artest" is very vague. Why not just sign Lebron now then?

STAY:
Dirk
Bass
Barea (but only if he's a bench player)
Hollins

MAYBE:
Josh (but trade him if you can get something good for him)
Wright (but only if he's coming off the bench as a defensive stopper/irritator)
Kidd (but only if you absolutely can't find a way to either get younger or better)
Singleton

GET THEM OUT OF HERE:
Damp (The Mavs have never had a good center. Maybe try that for a change?)
JET (love him, 6th man, but useless in the playoffs over and over. Enough)
Everyone else.

MUST GET:
A center who can score.
A young point guard who can score, distribute, and develop.
Players with toughness, athelicism, and attitude.

WOULD BE NICE:
A dependable shooting guard.

Resign Kidd.

Keep Terry. I know he was poor in the playoffs, he simply isn't reliable enough or tall enough or simply GOOD enough as a #2/#3 guy. Keep Terry and infuse talent that makes him the 4th, or even 5th offensive option.

Trade Dampier

Trade Stackhouse

Trade Josh if a good deal comes along.

Barea/Wright/Williams/Carroll are fillers to make #s work.

Bring Shan Foster over from Europe.

BTW can Bass be sign and traded? Resign him, or sign and trade him.

Can we make a move for D-Whistle? Honestly, that's what I think it's going to take to back into the title picture. The Corey Maggette's and Mike Millers aren't enough anymore. It'll take an all-NBA first team caliber guy.

We do have a first team all NBA guy. No other first teamers are teammates.

Well "duh" on the 1st part.

But the 2nd part is a bit of an exaggeration. Only a bit though, most title teams generally have 2 all-NBA caliber players, but not always 2 all-NBA 1st team caliber players.

Give me names. The only guys I can think of that would put us back in the title picture IMO are D-Whistle, Dwight Howard, Paul etc.... You're right that most teams don't have 2 first teamers, but we need either one 1st team quality guy, or 3 or 4 Corey Maggettes caliber guys. There are just too many holes on this roster. We need something HUGE to be contenders again.

Well, hypothetically speaking and pipe dreaming here that 3 teams would make trades w/ Dallas for the sake of dumping salary (Mavs technically do have the assets to acquire these 3 players, and there would be incentive for the other 3 franchises to dump salary):

Jason Kidd
Vince Carter
Gerald Wallace
Dirk Nowitzki
Shaq O'Neal

6th man: JET

Is a starting 5 that is competing for a championship IMO despite lacking any 1st all-NBA caliber players (besides Dirk). And I would say that this would constitute something "HUGE". It's speculative and uncertain as there could be chemistry/injury/age (possibility of Shaq or Kidd or Carter COMPLETELY losing it, or even slight drop in Dirk's efficiency) issues but ON PAPER, that to me is a team that at the very least is competing for a title.

But I agree that marginal upgrades are non-factors. Even if you do somehow sign Artest to the team for the MLE it's not an over the top move assuming no other deals are made. And some people seem to fancy centers like Kaman and Chandler but I don't, not spectacular players and not over the top moves. Overrating them and underrating Damp if you think that makes much a difference.

Buuuuut my main point is I could certainly envision situations where the Mavs can become contenders, it will take some luck/creativity and 2-3 deals though and hopefully others are willing to dump salary.

I dunno if it matters at the end of the day, we might be entering the Lebron era where it'll be damn near impossible to win a title.

Kidd walking is disasterous though, since now you have to tap into your assets to fill the PG void, which leaves not enough assets to infuse talent on the wings at center.

Kidd must be resigned IMO. It is not addition by subtraction if he walks. and if he does walk, the trade will look turrable.
