I gotta say, that starting lineup is pretty sick.
I thought it was pretty sick before the trade went down. Now I just feel sorry for the rest of the league. Our starting 5 will just flat out embarrass other teams. They are going to be damn good!

In 27 games Brandan Wright played 18.7 MPG or about 7.8% of the total minutes played by the roster each game. It's a loss, but it's actually not as big as it feels right now. Rondo comes in with some concerns, the biggest being his career worse free throw shooting percentage. Watch it go up after he comes to Dallas. His name is not Brendan Haywood.

Also Greg Smith will be the backup until the Mavericks bring in another big. Maybe Jermaine O'Neal. Maybe their big man in Japan, Bernard James.

The roster is down to 13 players, and we now know who the starting PG is whenever Raymond Felton is available. It is Rajon Rondo. No more controversy. Who is the primary backup though? Coach's favorite in JJ or Raymond? Only time will tell, but I am leaning towards JJ for now.

With Jae gone I am eager to see what the other players will do with the minutes that become available. We have not seen a whole lot from Charlie Villanueva and Greg Smith so it will be nice to see them in action.

If Rondo takes those primary ball-handling duties, as a traditional point guard would, then you’re really taking away the playmaking that Monta has given us these last 2 years.

With Monta, the point guard in this offense is really more of a spot-up shooter.

Not sure how Carlisle handles this.
true but carisle's system isn't like that, he rotates the guards from pg to sg depending the circumstances of the game, there's gonna be times when rajon gets the ball and times when monta gets it, monta is our best player so nobody's gonna deny him the ball

The only "loss" to the bench is Wright and while it is a big loss it doesn't take us from one of the best benches in the NBA to the worst

@BallinWithBryan: Parsons noted that he knows Rondo "fairly well." They're both affiliated with Anta shoes.

@espn_macmahon: Chandler Parsons: "Rajon Rondo is a stud. When you get a chance to acquire a guy like that, you’ve got to take full advantage of it."

@CelticsLife: Worth noting Dirk took a lesser contract to go for another title & Mavs got Parsons/Chandler/Rondo. Kobe went for the $$$ & LAL got Boozer

I agree. Monta is great, but he needs the ball in his hands to be the scorer/playmaker he is. Notice earlier this season, Monta's number were down because the ball was in Nelson's hands WAYY too much.

I don't know how this gets resolved. But I trust Rick.

Yes. Brandan was a major cog in the second unit, but losing him doesn't take Dallas from having one of the league's better benches to having the worst. Devin, JJB, RJeff and Aminu are all credible members of the rotation.

And Dallas will bring in another C. My money's on JO, but we'll see.

Ellis has the better jump shot, so with Rondo on the floor, I'd bet on Rondo handling the ball more often than not. But if in an alternate reality, RC can go the way of Coach Kidd and use a 2 PG look, where you can disguise sets by interchangeably using Monta/Rondo. If Rondo has the weaker defender, than you use Rondo as the primary, if Ellis has the weaker defender, than Ellis becomes the primary. It takes a little of the pressure off both players being the focal point. So when opponents try to break down game film and try to look for consistencies, RC can give multiple options using either Rondo and Ellis as the primary. It just adds to the offensive options, while improving the defense at the point of initiation. Now another option, do you put Ellis on the defensive point, and allow Rondo to roam as a free safety? Or do you suffocate their point with Rondo.

Better get on the horn quick for JO, there are small murmurs that Bogut might be out a while.

That is interesting about suffocating their point. I guess they can just put rondo on the more dangerous player.

Rondo is a pass first PG. I've kept up with him since he was a rookie. When the guy has options, he thinks to pass first than chucking it up like Jameer did. Rondo and Monta have the possibility to compliment each others game tremendously.

I was actually hoping the Mavs would draft him in the second round. I like his size, athleticism, and intelligence. It will still take several years like all bigs in the NBA, but I was hoping he turns out to be a solid role player type of guy ... that is 6'11".

We already had the best offense in the league playing without a starting PG. What does this do to our offense now??

You know how guards torched us?

Parker against us
This year - 23ppg on 60% shooting and 100% (4-4) from three

Parker against Rondo's Celtics
This year - 9ppg on 30% shooting and 0% (0-0) from three

Can't imagine the offense getting better after losing Wright. I am looking forward to seeing what the starting unit can do once they've had time to integrate Rondo.

Parker against us
This year - 23ppg on 60% shooting and 100% (4-4) from three

Parker against Rondo's Celtics
This year - 9ppg on 30% shooting and 0% (0-0) from three
Not having seen the game(s), I'd guess Bradley deserves more credit for that.

Rondo also has attitude. This video shows some immaturity, but the Heat stuff is pretty awesome.

I love this trade. Rondo and Tyson together gives Dallas's defense a HUGE upgrade. Our defense have been bad on most nights so far, Rondo's defense is so tenacious, its scary. I just hope they can stay healthy. I like Brandan Wright and Jae Crowder, wasn't a huge fan of Jameer, but we needed to improve on defense so bad.

Monta played with a pass first point guard last season. The difference is that Calderon was always posted behind the arc waiting to shoot that three and Rondo can't do that. However, Rondo brings way more on the defensive side than Calderon did. I anticipate Monta and Rondo sharing the ball handling duties. The questions is... What will Rondo be doing while Ellis has the ball?

Some of that was when he was really young. Rondo plays with an edge which is highly needed for us. Tyson won't have to be the only one playing mean defense now.

some great SI-reading from Rob Mahoney (before the trade went down)...

Rajon Rondo a fascinating possibility for Mavericks

...and a long piece on Rondo from Lee Jenkins:

We certainly can use his nasty.

In regards to depth, Im not too sad we traded off an uneven amount of players. Yes we were deep, but that depth was full of very average players and not enough minutes for all of them. Aminu will finally get more minutes, as long as he stops traveling.

What a gross overpay. We just gave Boston twice Rondo's market value despite him being a terrible fit. Feel sick to my stomach.
