Mavs make pact to sport beards

DALLAS -- Get used to the sight of a bushy beard on Dirk Nowitzki's face. It isn't going away until the 21-28 Dallas Mavericks get back to .500.

"It's been rough," said Nowitzki, who made a pact with a handful of teammates recently. "There's been some itching going on. Since we're still down seven games under .500, it's a long way to go."

I like this beard thing. But I just don't know if it's worth it if these guys fight to get that 8th spot and then have to go up against the Spurs or OKC. We're clearly not on the level of those teams. Sure you can say "It's the playoffs, anything can happen", which is true. But even though anything can happen, we need to think of what is more likely of happening. And I think that would be us getting swept in the first round yet again.

realistically, with Dirk on the roster, Cuban will never tank a season. Given this, making the playoffs is ALWAYS better than not making the playoffs.

Every playoff game we, as Mavs fans, get to watch with Dirk in a Mavs jersey is a priviledge and a pleasure, every single time. Because Dirk ALWAYS finds something extra in the playoffs, he goes from a 22-23ppg with 5 rebounds guy to a guy who can put up 35 and 14 on any/every given game. Any Mavs fan who, at this point in his career, doesn't simply want the most amount of playoff games possible is just ridiculous, in my opinion, and doesn't measure up to my standard for what it takes to be a "Dirk" fan

The front-office can play for next season in the trade market if they want, and I don't think anyone would hold such a decision against them at this point. But that's the front office. The coach and the players have a different job, and they shouldn't be doing anything less than spending every practice and every game trying to improve themselves and outcompete their opponents.

There's nothing wrong with making the playoffs. But let's not fool ourselves here. This team is 21-28 for a reason, it would be a struggle for them to make the playoffs because of how tough the West is. But even if they do, my problem is watching them get their asses kicked in the 1st round yet again. The team has already played 49 out of 82 games, I mean come on. I'm not saying they can't get better...but they would need to elevate their play tremendously to make the playoffs. AND after that, they would have to go up against the 1st seed. I dunno, Grandmaster. Seems like very tough odds to me.

I'm not disagreeing it'd be tough. And I'm not even that hopeful. I had some optimism before the Portland and GS losses, but that's dimmed considerably. I just think, if the coach and the guys in uniform can get the team into the playoffs, more power to them. I'm prepared to enjoy the ride for however long it goes and then when it ends, whether that's sooner or later, to start looking forward to next season with the same anticipation that I always do.

I have to say, though, in response to the bolded part above, let's not forget that the biggest reason this team is 21-28 is because Dirk's on-court contributions this year have only been good (and in uniform) enough to justify maybe 1/10th to 1/8th of the cap space that's tied up in his salary (and that might be overly generous). We may not ever get to see it this year, or may only get to see it too late, but this team with the Dirk I've watched through the years would a much better team than what we've seen so far. Of that I have no doubt.

I wonder about Dirk though, the guy is up there in age now and knee surgery is no joke. Coop nailed it. The beard angle is buzz and it's a positive (even if it's a low for the standards Dallas has created over the past decade plus).

Since 'The Time is Now' there hasn't been anything that's really caused a buzz that has created some excitement or something positive around the Mavs. Even if it's silly, it's good.

I think you couldn't be more wrong. Dirk never suffered a "catastrophic" knee injury, and there is no reason to believe, at this point, that it will be a recurring problem. You touched on a key point, Dirk has NEVER relied on athleticism to dominate, he simply doesn't have to. This knee surgery should in no way, shape, or form prevent him from regaining his previous dominance.
