No Luxury Tax next season for Mavs?
Looks like the Mavs have 12 players under contract for next season, totaling about $63MM in salary. This year's tax threshold was $65.4MM, up about $4MM from the year before. Assuming it stays about the same or goes up a little, the Mavs could well be under the Tax threshold, assuming a couple things. Curious what people's thoughts are, if this is something that Cuban is actively managing towards.
1. Croshere is allowed to expire and take a hike. If we trade his salary for something equivalent, that doesn't come off the books this year, we'll be back in tax land. Have to think this motivated the trade of Marquis for Cro.
2. Stackhouse is allowed to expire, and either leaves, or agrees to re-sign for a couple million. I tend to think Stack's on his last legs, so I'd be fine letting him walk away, but Avery plays him plenty of minutes still, so I can see the Mavs trying to bring him back--at a discount from his current salary, of course.
3. The remaining 2-3 roster spots (depends if Stack is in the mix or not) are filled with either draft picks or free agents at/near the league minimum. Pretty sure the Mavs will be sending their 1st rounder to GS to complete the Damp trade, but will have 2 2nd rounders in 2007. Maybe we can swing a S&T for Stack or Cro to move up into the 1st, but I doubt it.
Given that 1 & 2 need to happen, I think it's pretty unlikely we're going to see any trades for those two expiring contracts this year--I think we'll just let them expire. What do you think?

I think that we let both of those big contracts expire. But, we will resign Stack, not only as a good bench player, but also as a (not the only) leader of this team. He is highly respected by the others as far as I can tell. I just hope he is realistic and doesn't ask for too much on his next contract.
Consequently, I don't expect very much trade activity this year or this summer. Maybe a free agent pickup.

I think croshere will be moved this year for something, some sort of specialist...najera would work as an energy guy, we don't have many of those. Devean has solidified backup duties behind josh and dirk it seems to me.

I believe that Cuban and management have planned the drop out of the luxury tax and have a nice business plan in place. By positioning themselves to drop under the tax next season, the Mavs have put themselves in a position where they could make a huge trade. Cuban has shown by his actions that he is willing to go over the tax for the right deal. I like what the Mavs are doing. We have a champioship caliber team today with potential flexibility at this years trade dealine and the off season.
Brilliant!

Stack is the on/off court leader of this team. We cant lose Stack at all. Dirk is not the emotional leader and that is just not his style. Not a knock on Dirk, but just the truth.
I do feel that Croshere's contract will be used to get somebody here this year. I think Croshere is going to part of a 3 team deal for A.I., but we will NOT get A.I. I am hoping that we get Daniels back. I really want him back. I am a big time Daniels fan, and I feel he brings alot more balance to the Mavs at the 1,2,3. He can play any of those positions, and can make it tough even on bigger guards as well. This would cut down on Pistons/Clippers/Suns type of teams.
I am still not a fan of the 2 guard line-up. I have been asking for Terry back at the PG spot for a little while now, and I know Cuban gets tired of getting emails from me about this But I am somewhat happy because I do see Terry back at PG..

Daniels is as inconsistent and injury prone as it gets and "really" lighting it up now with
5.4 PPG ( .383 FG%, .250 3P%), 2.0 RPG, 1.4 APG in 17.9 MPG
in the EAST!
I wouldn't even trade JJB for him. Just say no to one of the most overrated Mavs ever.

Nellie always liked him... may be we'd see a trade to the Warriors.
I always liked his game except for his outside shooting which was horrendous. Sadly, he never worked on it the same way as Josh did on his.
