Oh, that. I've seen that before.
I'm not big on buying things in the spur of the moment. I guess if they had something I've been in the market for... but I don't check it regularly.
Have you got some good deals?

Yeah. But the main source of its popularity around here are woot-offs (which is going on right now, hence my curiosity) and the crazy cube-type-toys you can get from them (along with Bags of Crap, those are a hoot).

Our sys admin here is pretty big into it, and even installed the wootalyzer on a machine or two just to keep up with stuff.

Myself and my two...cubemates I guess you could call them...have been the driving force for Woot's popularity in my office. We have woot lights on our monitors and have daily screaming monkey fights. Good times....
It's been pretty impressive how much it has spread. Woot-offs result in a lot of wasted productivity around here now...

It was big with us when it was new... not so much anymore. I just stopped watching because I felt like there was one good item for every 25 pieces of crap offered.
They're based in north Irving/Las Colinas area.. or at least they were around 2006.

I check it every now and then, never bought anything though. It would have to be something I had wanted and been shopping for for a while.

Like...1 TV per 25 headlamps.
The woot off the other day was pretty lame.

The most recent woot off was not great, but that's the point of woot. you never know when you're going to get a hidden gme.

I can usually find better deals elsewhere. Also since Woot is in Texas..tax+shipping negates a good deal.

True. Although why do people keep saying "the most recent woot off"? There's one still going this minute.

The tax is a bummer. Although the "taxsucks" code can help with that for mid-range items. I don't ever buy anything expensive from woot anyway, although they occasionaly have nice deals on tvs.

How can you tell?
I'm still unclear on the term "woot off"...and on pretty much all of this.

From the way it has been described in this thread...a "woot-off" sounds like a bunch of tech nerds seeing who is the fastest to identify the newest woot offer. Exciting!

Ok...Woot's bit is it sells one item a day. The item goes up at midnight and it goes until it sells out or until midnight the next day. Shipping for everything is five dollars.
Once every six weeks or so, they have a woot off. You can tell because there will be yellow flashign lights and a yellow progress bar on the screen. During a woot off, when one item ends, another starts. They usually run for about 40 hours or so. During woot offs they tend to sprinkle in wacky toys along with more typical items that you would see on a daily woot.
The biggest draw of the wootoff is a "Bag of Crap". For three bucks you get a bag of some sort (think camera bag) and three craps (three random items from their warehouse). Sometimes you get pretty nice stuff (I got a coffee maker that I sold on ebay for 50 bucks), sometimes you get incredibly weird stuff (buddy of mine got chinese spidermans with only the front painted, you really have to see them for the full effect) and sometimes you get absolute trash. Their "Bags of Crap" are so popular that every time they go up for sell the Woot servers crash for a short period of time.
There's Woot in a few paragraphs.

So...you are saying that a big part of the woot experience is to try to buy some bag of crap that no one actually has a good reason to want? And people work very hard to do so?
Or...are you saying that a big part of the woot experience is to be there when they are giving something away for much more value than you have to pay for it?

The website ate my response to Chum. I hate that.
Basically Chum...both. The bags of crap are fun because who doesn't love a grab bag? I've gotten several useful items that I've kept and used, I've gotten multiple things I've sold on ebay for a nice profit, and I've gotten some completely bizarre and hilarious things.
And beyond that, yes, they do have good deals at times. Woot offs are fun because of the sheer randomness. My office neighbor bought a plunge router yesterday and an rc helicopter today.

That sounds pretty cool. But I don't understand the competitive element of it. Is it who gets the best grab bag?

Woot: It's a deal site.
It's for people that like deals...like me. Except, I'm not a big wooter. I stick to the forums.

woot-off today (and was happening yesterday, too). I made my first woot purchase! Bought a new driver - i don't golf that much, but couldn't pass up a new nike driver for 70 bucks.
i have bought a few things off shirt.woot, too. they have some fun shirt designs every so often.

Ugh, I need to stay away from Woot... not enough disposable income to survive a glance at that site. Especially during a woot-off.

If you guys like Woot you guys would probably like 6pm and Cheapassgamers! The first websites might have special sales on nice shoes, watches, or clothes but I only check the website if they have some nice shoes on sale (dress shoes). I play video games and they are pretty pricey but if you want long enough you will find games in the $10 dollar range
