Thing with the Rockets is that they're at 78mill without Paul, Ariza, and only 8 guys on the roster. Cap is going to be around 108.
Paul - max contract (35mill)
Capela - max contract (25mill)
Those two alone would put them over the cap, however, they're no better than the team that keeps getting wrecked by the Warriors. If they let Capela/Paul go, I don't see them competing. If they re-sign guys, they're only as good as they were this past season.
At least Harden is getting his 31mill

Morey is going to pay Paul and Capela or he is looking at a trainwreck at roster. His ego wont let this happen. The owner is also not a cheap ass like Alexander.
They re-sign Paul and Capela and let Ariza walk. In 2019 they try to dump Ryan with a 1st or stretch him to reduce the tax bill...

Can't they go over the cap to keep both? What are their cap holds?
EDIT: Never mind, looked it up -- Capela is only $7m, but Paul is a whopping $35m... I wonder if Cuban offers Capela max just to F with Morey and force Houston into the luxury tax early? At worst we land a max player who appears to be worth his salt.

To be fair, they were arguably a Paul injury away from advancing.
However, Paul always gets hurt, so it's interesting to see how that all turns out.

Iggy was also injured and Klay was a little gimpy, still wondering how that series looks with both teams at 100%.

They can go over to sign Capela, Paul, and even Ariza
They can't, however, go over to grab a LeBron or George.
78mill - current cap hit
35mill - Paul
25mill - Capela
---------------
138mill (without Ariza)
Cap is 108mill. Tax threshold at 123mill. If Paul demands the max and we force them to re-sign Capela at 25mill, we'll either get Capela or we'll force Rockets not only over the cap, but into the tax.

I still think they try to force a sign and trade for LeBron. Hopefully Gilbert gets salty and says no.
They can sign and trade Capela, no? Then sign some bandwagon Centers who want a shot at a ring with the exceptions or minimums.

They'd be better off sign-and-trading Paul than Capela, otherwise they'd have three ball-handlers in LeBron/Harden/CP3 and no rim protector (none of the guys willing to play for minimum are gonna hold down the paint).

I still think Lebron and Houston is nonsense. For what UD said, and because if he wants his max and CP3 wants his there isn't really a way to make it work unless they traded everyone nearly. They could prolly keep one of pj tucker or Capela. Then they would have to work out deals that sent away Gordon, tucker/capela(or let capela walk), Nene, and the big one ryan anderson. And they would have to make these trades and take back no salary in return. But hey if Lebron wants to be there then they will find a way I just don't buy it. Anderson as it stands now would require more than 1 late first to dump btw imo.
I do think getting PG13 is viable for them though as his max isn't nearly as big as Lebron or CP3. And he would be open to a shorter term 2 year max deal I believe to get him to the 10year veteran status to get the huge payday the following summer. He might still prefer LA but I think if CP3 offers him a spot on the bromancing banana boat he would join them.

I doubt they'd need or care about a rim protector if they had Paul/Harden/James. Just sign some dog crap like Javale.

I will say though that half the teams in the league think they are getting Lebron. Glad we are out of that nonsense rat race.

According to Rockets ownership they want to keep Chris Paul (and Capela). Also apparently CP is trying to recruit Labron to Houston.

I don't see a way they can dump Ryan Anderson. They have no assets. Eric Gordon and PJ are nice players but not exactly bargains. And their picks will be low. Capela is their only trade asset but he's getting 20m in a s'n't and a team cant take back Anderson along with that w/out dumping an equally bad contract. Only way is if CP or LeBron take considerably less for one year, CP would be nuts- he's one big injury away from retired.

He might, I just think he's more plausible than Lebron for Houston.

I think Houston sticks with a Harden/Paul/Capela core, and instead upgrades their role players with mercs looking for a shot at a ring.

If the Suns draft Doncic we dont have to do it because the Suns are going to throw the max offer at Capela

If Lebron wants to go to Houston I rly think the appropriate people would know before hand. He's going to know where he wants to be before free agency starts because he's Lebron. It's not like Kyle Lowry, or whoever joe all star is who wants to explore options and be wined and dined. Whether or not Houston wants Lebron or someone else they would have done their due diligence as well and discussed with other teams what it would take to shed the requisite salary and laid the groundwork so to speak I think. I don't think we would catch them in a rush tbh.

Good points, but I think Lebron will entertain 76ers and Lakers offers as well (IMO).

I think the possibilities are: A) he already knows where he's going and its been set in motion behind the scenes B) he has it narrowed down to 3 places (Philly, Houston, LAL) and will meet with them to hear their respective pitches, but is leaning one way already.
To me, the most LeBron thing in the world would be that he's set it all up ahead of time to his liking. Would Kawhi for Ingram, Ball and Hart and picks, etc. and then LeBron and PG13 follow shock me? No? Would him having a deal set up a year ago to form a banana boat bro circle jerk in Houston with Melo and Wade joining him and CP shock me? No. Would him staying East for another easier finals road? Nope
Houston Advantages: star power, title contender. Negatives: making $ work
Philly Advantages: stay East, young stars, assets to trade for more
LAL: media, home in LA, decent assets and cap
is Boston a sleeper?

Would be kinda funny if Lebron chose Boston and Boston trades Kyrie back to Clev since he wanted his own team leaving him with that mess of a roster.

That could be fun. Maybe they'll deal #10 so they have cap for Lebron and Reddick? Maybe Saric is available? Fultz? If Lebron is headed there they should accelerate the timeline and surround their 3 stars with shooters and defenders.
Would love it if we could get in on Saric or #10!

I also don't see how that works when you have Ben Simmons. While you don't pass on Lebron taking the ball out of Simmons hands makes him useless. Dude can't shoot and I don't think Lebron is going to be a guy who sits in the corners trying to knockdown 3's.

@NBADraftWass: Almost everyone I reached out to around NBA expects Suns to draft Ayton #1. Only non-Ayton answers were I don’t knows. No firm Doncic responses.

Anyone have any interest in trying to swing a deal for Kevin Love (once LeBron leaves)? Does cap relief and a lottery-protected pick get it done?

Love doesnt really fit the rebuilding timeline (age 30), he also has a PO in 2019 and may walk again. So my guess is his value isnt really high because teams have to threat him like a one year rental in worst case but i would prefer to throw max at Aaron Gordon (age 23 next season)

That too...his crying and blaming towards Olynk after the armbar injury was ridiculous since Love armbars his opponents pretty much on every rebound
