Do you remember Josh Howard in '08-'09 ?
He missed ton of games during the reg. season and in the playoffs he was the most energetic/freshest guy on the floor, when he single handedly beat the Spurs.
Sometimes rust is overrated. Especially on the defensive end rest>>>rust.

Why would Caron playing have anything to do with Stevenson's minutes? You think they're going to bring him back from a five month injury AND play him at a position he hasn't played all year?

At this time of year with every move so important, Butler dressing, then stepping on the floor will inspire us to go just that much further, give us that boost of adrenaline.....in games where 3-4 minutes are huge.

Yea, I don't think we should get him out of position, he knows our plays, both ways, don't mess with it, slide him and let him go 2-3 minutes a night dependent on matchups. If he eats anything it'll be into our forward rotation of Peja and Marion, all depends on matchups.

Last time Butler was rumored to come back was right before the LA series, the last rumor before that was right before the Portland series - we're just messing with our opponents game-planning at this point...

If we want him as a minor bench option for the finals he should start with full contact this week. Damnit, the Heat are the matchup were we need him the most.
Any news?

I like what Haslem has brought to the Heat and think Butler could do the same. Let me rephrase that, I actually don't like what Haslem has brought to the Heat because now they look even better.

Mavs don't rule out Caron Butler return
The Dallas Mavericks do not anticipate that Caron Butler will be able to play in the NBA Finals, although that remains a possibility.
"It's unlikely, but I can't rule it out for sure," coach Rick Carlisle said during a Thursday morning appearance on ESPN 103.3's "Ben and Skin Show".
Butler, a two-time All-Star who began his career with the Miami Heat, has been working to return from a ruptured patellar tendon in his right knee. Butler is able to sprint and jump, but he has not yet been cleared for full-contact practice.
Butler suffered the injury on New Year's Day in Milwaukee, popped the kneecap back in place and walked to the Mavericks' locker room because he didn't want the dozens of friends and family members who traveled from his hometown of Racine, Wis., to attend the game to see him carried off the court.
After Butler underwent surgery days later, the Mavericks announced that he would be out for the season. However, Butler declared soon afterward that he was determined to return during Dallas' playoff run.
Butler, known by his "Tuff Juice" nickname, was averaging 15.0 points as the starting small forward for a 24-7 team when he was injured. The Mavs signed Peja Stojakovic in midseason to help fill the scoring void created by Butler's absence.
Butler wasn't able to contribute to the Mavs' Western Conference championship run, but his positive attitude and work ethic has been an inspiration to teammates and coaches.
"I just want to see him in layup lines," Dallas guard Jason Terry said recently. "If he can get up in layup lines, it's going to boost us immensely emotionally. He's been here the whole way, though. This guy has worked so hard to get ready."

Even if he had been cleared to practice by now, which he hasn't, it would be an iffy proposition for a coach to change the rotation and introduce that kind of potential rust and chemistry alteration. I think we've been hopeful and maybe we'll continue to be, but...it sounds like a no go.

I think we, as a fanbase, need to perpetuate the myth so Miami at least has to gameplan for him...

Since we're not going 12-deep in the Finals anyway short of catastrophic injury/foul trouble, I wouldn't be opposed to suiting him up, just for the psychological boost.
Although I'll still say, if he can get in there and play a bit of defense, it'd be huge.

It would be great to have Caron back, if only for 10 decent minutes on the defensive end to a) give Marion enough rest, b) be prepared for potential foul trouble as it relates to Marion and c) not have to rely on Peja to play more minutes than he's capable of in this particular matchup.
Peja certainly benefited from the matchups in the first two rounds. Guys like Batum, Wallace, Artest and Barnes weren't able to exploit his defensive shortcomings due to their own shortcomings on the offensive end. Things got a whole lot more difficult against OKC with Durant and Harden. Miami should be even tougher with LeBron and Wade.
If Caron wasn't able to come back or at least be helpful in very limited minutes, one would hope that Peja could make shots like in the first two rounds to somewhat offset potential problems on defense. It would be equally big if Stevenson could knock down the 3 with any regularity and if Jet could go back to shooting at a higher percentage than in the WCF.
That said, we beat OKC 4-1 despite Jet, Peja and Stevenson struggling with their shots. Not being able to rely on Caron wouldn't be the end of the world considering that we weren't perfect against OKC and still came out on top.
Edit:

I guess I could have reduced this post to your quote, LDub. That's basically the only thing I'd want from Caron. Maybe 10 minutes with decent defense and the occasional made shot. Not 30 minutes and 15 PPG like during the regular season.

Better play 10 minutes with Butler, than 3 PG line.

Is Butler OK now and we can see him in the finals?

If Butler's ready to play, I would not be at all opposed to seeing him out there for a few minutes or so, just to give Marion a breather. Lord knows we're knows we're not get anything defensively from Peja.

Id love to see butler out there playing a few minutes coming off the bench and see how it goes. I know its risky, but if hes available and could give us a few minutes then I dont see any harm.

I today rewatched the game against the Heat @ Miami playing with Marion and CB. How great was it with those two on the court. Loved it when the heat run a Lebron wade P & R. Simply switch without any missmatch generated at all
I am quiet sure CB will dress for the emotional push. Make it happen

Butler's attitude rubs off on Mavericks
DALLAS -- The Dallas Mavericks understood that however hard he worked, forward Caron Butler probably would not be joining this team of ring-less veterans on its pursuit of an NBA title.
So they dedicated the journey to him.
"We all said when the playoffs started we wanted to do it for him," guard Jason Terry said. "And if you ask him, I'm one of the guys that told him, 'Hey, we're doing this for you this time big boy.' I told you we'd do it and it's here now."
The rugged, 6-foot-7 Butler would be a significant asset for Dallas in the NBA Finals against the Miami Heat. In two regular-season games against the Heat, he averaged 18.0 points on 54.2-percent shooting and defensively helped limit LeBron James to 30.6 percent from the field.
But Butler ruptured the patellar tendon in his right knee in front of numerous family and friends in Milwaukee on Jan. 1. The Racine, Wis., native underwent surgery a few days later and has since been a constant presence around team -- and a source of inspiration, the team says -- as he bulldozes through rehabilitation.
Mavs coach Rick Carlisle reiterated that Butler is a longshot to play during the NBA Finals, but he refuses to shut the door on a possible return. Butler has yet to practice with the team and Carlisle continues to be vague about a potential timeline even though he said Butler's recovery is well ahead of schedule.
Butler was away from the team Saturday to attend to a family situation. He is expected to fly with the team to Miami on Sunday.
"He gets closer all the time. Really, I don't want to close the door on it because with him, he's never a guy you want to bet against," Carlisle said. "He's just one of those special guys. He's a month-and-a-half, two months ahead of the normal rehab schedule for a normal human being. It just shows the kind of work he's put into it, the sort of single-minded compulsiveness of his approach and how diligent he's been.
"It's been an inspiration to have him around. I just don't think it's the right thing to close the door even though I think it's unlikely [he'll play]."
A Butler return could have a similar emotional lift for the Mavs as Butler's former teammate with the Heat, Udonis Haslem, has had on his team. The blue-collar Haslem, in his eighth year with the Heat, played the first 13 games of the regular season before a foot injury sidelined him until late in the Eastern Conference semifinals.
He played in all five East finals against the Chicago Bulls, averaging a hard-working 22.2 minutes a game. His hustle is credited for tilting pivotal Game 2 in Miami's favor.
Butler was close to overtaking Terry as the team's second-leading scorer and was riding a sensational two-week wave before he went down.
He has seen two of his former teams, the Heat and the Los Angeles Lakers, win championships after he departed. His current team knows they could use what Butler -- long ago given the nickname "Tuff Juice" -- brings in what promises to be a physical Finals matchup against the star-studded Heat.
"He gives you that mental toughness, that edge we like to play with," Terry said. "He would definitely help us because his ability to one, create his own shot, and then defensively he could matchup obviously with LeBron [James] and Dwyane Wade. He would be another guy that would be on one of those guys."
