World Series of Poker
The World Series of Poker has been going on for the past few weeks in Vegas, but the main event ($10,000 NL Hold 'Em) starts today. Last year's event drew 839 entrants, this year's entry count is around 2,600! The winner is expected to take around $5.5 million!
Sadly, ESPN coverage won't start until June 8th, and it's coverage of the final event won't start until much later.
For those of you who didn't know, as opposed to the 7 episodes that ESPN ran last year, this year they will be running 24 episodes covering many of the other events, as well as the final.

RE:World Series of Poker
Since everyone seems to care so much about the updates, I figured I'd let everyone know that the final table starts today. The final nine players include someone from the Woodlands and someone from Dallas, as well as former champion and 2003 3rd place finisher Dan Harrington.

RE:World Series of Poker
I do play online at PartyPoker, and the competition is over. I didn't update anymore because I didn't think people were caring.
The championship was won by a Connecticut attorney named Greg Raymer. Second place finisher was Dave Williams, a 23 year old student from SMU. The Woodlands native, Dean (don't remember his first name) finished 7th. First prize to Raymer was 5 million, Williams earned 3.5. Dan Harrington, 1995 world champion, finished in 4th place after being eliminated by Williams.
Shockingly, when the final table was down to three people, only 7 hands were played until the third person was eliminated, and only 7 hands were played heads up before the champion was crowned. Much different than last year when Chris Moneymaker and Sam Farha played for around 2 hours (I believe) before Moneymaker won.

RE:World Series of Poker
It will air on ESPN starting July 6th through September 14th. They will be showing some of the other events, not just the NL Hold 'Em main event. As far as a DVD goes, I don't know, but I wouldn't rule it out considering how huge the poker boom has been. A DVD was not released of the 2003 series, and I've yet to see an official DVD release of the Travel Channel's World Poker Tour.
As far as Raymer goes, he may not be a big name pro, but he isn't exactly an amateur either. He's a well respected player among TwoPlusTwo publishing, which is a website that has a great poker forum. He plays often at Foxwoods casino and does pretty well. He has surprised a lot of people, but for those in the know (of which I am usually not, but I read TwoPlusTwo) it shouldn't come as too shocking. Raymer took over chip lead at one point during the second day, and never fell lower than 4th in chips after that. He started the final table with 8 million chips, second most had around 4. When it got to heads up play, he had an 18 million to 7 million chip lead. Pretty much a wire to wire dominating performance. He did run pretty lucky at the beginning of the final table, eliminating the first two competitors on all-in calls with the worst hand, but got the cards to knock them out. From there, he played great poker to win.
Other interesting notes:
*Chris Moneymaker, last year's champion, was eliminated in the first day. He made a great play, but got sucked out on the turn.
*Other first day eliminations included Phil Ivey, Sammy Farha and Scotty Nguyen.
*Celebrities such as Matt Damon, Laura Prepon, and Toby Maguire participated.
*Doyle Brunson made an outstanding run in the tournament, but fell short at 52nd.
*Chris "Jesus" Ferguson was down to 3,000 chips with about 40 people left, (putting the chip average at about 650,000) but through a series of all-ins, raised his total to around 200,000 before getting knocked out in 32nd or so.

RE:World Series of Poker
It's sad what ESPN's constant reruns have done to people's minds. Phil Ivey wore the Francis jersey one day during the 2003 World Championship. But, because ESPN has shown that 2003 World Series 25 million times, people think Ivey always wears the jersey.
Well, soon we'll get ESPN showing the 2004 25 million times.

RE: World Series of Poker
Phil Ivey is very well known and FCC's assertion that he is money is certainly not outrageous. Ivey has been called the "Tiger Woods of Poker" for a while now.
But yeah...ESPN does run that an awful lot don't they....

RE:World Series of Poker
Oh, I was certainly not questioning Ivey's ability as a player. I did not mean to come off that way. He is an amazing poker player, although the whole "Tiger Woods" thing just seems a little convenient. A great player who already has three World Series bracelets, and will win many more. Hopefully he'll win the big one during his career.

RE:World Series of Poker
Chaffy, Sike...you both said you play at Party Poker. I've never played online before, but I'm looking into it. I suppose Party Poker is the place to go? What about any other places? I have heard about Ultimate Bet.
I really don't even know how these places work. It's legal to play from Texas? What, do you use a credit card account?
Any tips you can give me about where to find good games? What type of games do you guys play in?

RE:World Series of Poker
I've played at PartyPoker for a while now. They certainly have the largest pool of players, which also means the largest pool of bad players. I don't really like Ultimate Bet that much, but some prefer it, and it has a good reputation. PokerStars is also a site with a good reputation. I just signed up for an account with FullTiltPoker. They haven't launched real money games yet, but I like it so far.
You can put money into your account through a credit card or through connecting your bank account. However, it depends on the bank and the credit card on whether or not you can put money in. Certain banks and credit companies look down upon online gambling, so they won't allow it.
Whether or not online poker is legal in Texas, I'm not positive, but I'm leaning towards it not being so. However, most of these sites (like PartyPoker) are run out of the country. When you cash out, they either put the money into your bank account or send you a check from a shell company.
The lowest limits PartyPoker offers are .50/1 dollar games, other sites like UltimateBet offer as low as .01/.02 cent games.

I'm not sure really. I just get this feel from him. He's an ass. Always belittling the other guy etc. I know that trash talk is big in poker, but he just strikes me as annoying. And I don't like watching his fat dad in the crowd after every freaking hand.

Thanks for the info, Chaffy. The bulk of my experience is from playing 4/8 games in Shreveport. Would you have any idea whether I could expect the online competition in that sort of game to be better, worse, or similar?

RE:World Series of Poker
Well, I'm not yet 21, so I've never been to a casino, though I hope to make a Spring Break trip to Vegas. But, I would think that the games would be weaker online than in B&M cardrooms, simply because there are so many people playing. I guess it would depend on when you went to Shreveport. If you were there during a holiday (or even a weekend) the games would be a bit weaker than if you went during the middle of the week (when players who play a lot would be there.)
However, there are some great internet players out there, several who make a living playing online. As as can be seen by the last few World Series, internet players are having a huge influence of the game. But, overall I'd say the internet games would be weaker.

RE:World Series of Poker
I'll sign up with Party Poker and give it a try. The Saturday night games in Shreveport are fast and loose, for sure. It's not uncommon for seven or eight players to see the flop with regularity.
Maybe I ought to get my online feet wet in those 50-cent games.

RE:World Series of Poker
Yes, they show Late Night Poker on Fox Sports Southwest from time to time. I personally hate it. I think Jessie May is a horrible commentator, and I just don't like the production of the show.
The World Series of Poker is a series of events held in Las Vegas every year. The main event ($10,000 buy-in No-Limit Texas Hold 'Em) is considered the top event in Poker.
The World Poker Tour is a show produced by the Travel Channel. They go to different exotic locales and play poker. The prize pools are often still significant.

RE:World Series of Poker
It's baaaaaack.
The World Series of Poker began two days ago, with a casino-employees event. Yesterday was the start of the $1500 NL Hold Em event. The event drew over 2000 people, and first prize is expected to be over $700,000, making it the largest ever prize pool for a non Main Event tournament. A lot of pros played in this one, obviously, and as of now, I believe it's down to about 400 players. The event should be finished by tomorrow. Notable names still around include Phil Hellmuth, Scott Fischman, Greg Raymer, Mike Matusow and David "Devilfish" Ulliot. I'll try and give more details when I find them.
Of course, this is just one of the minor events, and ESPN will air the final table a few months from now. This is Event 2 of 45 events. The Main event is the $10,000 buy-in No-Limit Texas Hold-em Event. It is scheduled to start July 7, and is expected to have over 6500 entrants. They are setting up 3 "Day 1s" and combining the field on the 4th day for space reasons.
Here is a link to the official schedule. You can find updates of the main events on Cardplayer.com, as well as many other sites if you want to search hard. If desired, I can provide brief recaps, as well as try and find information about specific players if there are requests. I'm going to be surfing around looking for updates anyway, so I'm sure that will make things easier for some of you non-poker heads.
I will also try and not flood this thread with a ton of responses, so I might edit this post a few times. Maybe I'll have a new post for each tournament, and edit those posts when updates on that particular tournament comes in. Sound good?
-Down to 200 players, which is in the money. Players still in include Mark Seif, Dewey Tomko, Devilfish Ulliot, Fischman, Hellmuth, Cindy Violette, Eric Mizrachi, Evelyn Ng, An Tran, and Mike Matusow.
-Well, I had to go to sleep, but I'm back now with an update. We are down to 111 players, and sorry chum, Fischman and Matusow are both still alive. Matusow is among the top leaders in chips. Other notable names, AJ Kelsall (if you watched the USPC on ESPN a few months ago, you might recognize him) Devilfish, Violette. The match with start again at approximately 2 p.m. Vegas time. Blinds will begin at 1k-2k, which puts Greg Raymer (19k in chips) and Phil Hellmuth (12.2k) in desperation mode. Hellmuth's cash in this event ties him for the most all-time WSOP cashes, I believe. *EDIT - Apparently Raymer is much better off than I initially found, I just read something that has him at 44k in chips.
-The event is about to restart with 111 players remaining. They are scheduled to play down to 9 players today, and then play the final table tomorrow. More updates soon.
-Down to about 75 players. Greg Raymer has been eliminated, after moving all in with TT on an 8-8-6 board. He was called by a player with AQ, and a queen hit on the turn to knock him out. Hellmuth has doubled up after sucking out on A-9 with his J-9. Cecilia Mortensen, wife of 2001 WSOP champ Carlos Mortensen, has been eliminated. Mike Matusow and Scott Fischman are among the chip leaders.
-Down to 28 players. I believe that Hellmuth, Fischman, Devilfish, and An Tran are still alive. Matusow has been eliminated.
-Down to 18. Hellmuth went out in 23rd. Fischman, Allen Cunningham, and Devilfish are still alive.
-Tournament is done for the night, the final table with start tomorrow. The final 9 players are: Allen Cunningham, CK Hua, Scott Fischman, "Devilfish" Ulliot, Richard Boutwell, Liz Lieu, Huff, Edmunson, and An Tran
-Allen Cunningham beats Scott Fischman heads-up to win the first event of the WSOP.

Alright, while event 2 is still going on, Event 3 of the WSOP $1,500 Pot-Limit Hold 'Em has begun. Keep watching my above post for edits regarding Event 2. Here I'll give some updates on Event 3.
-Appears to have started with 73 tables, so somewhere in the neighborhood of 730 players. Lots of big names in this one. Tobey Maguire, Johnny Chan, James Woods, Annie Duke, Brett Jungblutt, Michael Mizrachi, Layne Flack, David Sklansky, etc.
-Daniel Negreanu was eliminated 4 hands into the tournament. He had 8-8 on an A-A-8 board, but ran into someone who had quad Aces. Erick Lindgren has also been eliminated.
-Antonio Esfandiari was elminated by Barry Greenstein, but BG was sent to the rail a few minutes later by former WSOP champ Huck Seed. The event is down to 500 players or so.
-Down to 195 players. Started with approximately 1,070 players, first prize is $365,000. Layne Flack is one of the chip leaders. Notables still alive: Nick Frangos, Marcel Luske, Kathy Liebert, Todd Brunson, David Grey, Hoyt Corkins and Andy Bloch
-Tom Werthman wins Event 3, Pot-Limit Hold 'Em, outlasting Layne Flack. At one point, Flack had crippled Werthman, leaving him with only 40,000 in chips (with 1.5 million in play) with 4 players left. But Werthman went on a huge rush to come back and win. Chip and a chair, folks.

Do celebs like Tobey Maguire or Ben Afleck ever win events like this? The only good celeb that I have ever seen win a big tourney was Jerry Buss.

In June 04, Ben Affleck won the 10,000 buy in California Poker Championship, cashing for over $350,000.
I believe Toby Maguire has made a final table of a decent sized tournament before.
