Default RESCHEDULED GDT: game 10 - Pelican'ts (4-5) at Mavs (5-4) RESCHEDULED

Big game. Mavs may have only 9 players available because of Covid and a minimum of 8 players are required to be able to play, although there are rumors KP may be available.

Pelicans are the type of physical team that can give us fits. They are 1st in the league in rebounding which is one of our weaknesses--even more so without our second and third best rebounders (Kleber and DFS)

Injury report
KP - knee - questionable!
Kleber - Covid - out
Brunson - Covid - out
Richardson - Covid - out
Finney-Smith - Covid out

Melli - questionable
Adams - migraine - questionable

Rankings
Offense - Mavs 17th - Pelicans 21st
Defense - Mavs 3rd - Pelicans 6th
Rebounding - Pelicans 1st - Mavs 18th

Kleber is now listed a questionable because he might have had a false positive. Will be be tested again tomorrow to see if he can play.

That would be amazing.

I assume if KP comes back, he'll be limited to about 10 minutes.

Pelicans are a team that will get WCS in foul trouble fast so even with KP, we'd be looking at 20-35 minutes of Powell.

Bobi should get extended minutes, and a zone will conserve team energy on defensive end. Should be fun with some bigger lineups.

Another benefit to zone is less fouls, so that could help WCS stay on the court longer.

Zone may actually work against the Pelicans. They're the worst three point shooters in the league.

Zone falls apart when guys can hit a three, but so far they haven't been.

I don't see Rick playing zone much at all.

He barely played it 2 possessions vs Orlando and they are just as bad as New Orleans.

But I agree vs Steven Adams the Mavs should play Boban a good amount of minutes.

Not sure who they will put on Zion if Kleber doesn't play. Best guess is they go with James Johnson.

@townbrad

Porzingis is listed as probable starter in Mavs media notes. That's a pretty big step up from a "questionable" listing in the injury report, but that's seemingly a promising indicator.

I'm very happy to hear KP is back! Let's hope he's not too rusty and can hit the ground running. Figuratively, of course, because if he literally hit the ground running, he might tear something in his knees.

The starters have WCS starting next to him which should help hide some of his rustiness on defense.

Offense will come in time. Except some clunkers.

Mavs didn't have 8 players to suit up to play. Wow.

All of this because of the stupid ass Olympics.

One player is positive. Five more have had contact with them.

Those are the breaks for a closely-knit team.

Looks like Burke had the first positive. It was Covid after all.

I'm surprised not more of you are happy that they postponed this game.

Mavs are without some of their top players and these games are very important with the season being cut to 72 games.

Can't afford to lose games when you don't have your top players.

NBA should consider the bubble again or else I think the league will be close to shutting down by Febuary.

True, but on the other hand we have to live daily with terrorist insurrections and mass covid infections. This is one of our only outs from that crap.

Plus, it is good learning experience for Green and also getting KP back on the court.

I'm far more worried about the whole season getting suspended than I am about losing a regular season game.

Impossible. At least for a whole season. The only way the bubble would work if they did the same thing again- only a few weeks and a limited number of teams. Having 30 teams and 60+ games in the bubble is just not feasible.

Yeah last year's plan won't work here.

1) Last year they trimmed off 8 teams (22 vs. 30) and even then teams had to play at 11am when people were at work. No way you can just trim 8 teams again.

2) PLayers would not agree to play for 60-65 games in the bubble. The three-month bubble was bad enough on players. They won't go back to the bubble again for even 30 games when it means they can't see their wives and kids (and in the case of Harden and Lou Williams-- their favorite stripper)

3) Players are generally not happy. They've lost 40% of the value of their 2020-2021 salary already through escrow on lost revenue. If they cancel the season, then they lose closer to 90-95%.

Don't know if there is a good answer to this.

something tells me they might consider it.

not just for one location obviously, but i think it could involve two seperate locations and broken down by conference only.

I can see them considering having a setup in Orlando for the EAST and Vegas for the west teams as a last resort before shutting down the season completely.

That's going to take time and last year Orlando took 200million dollars to run while the NBA absolutely bled money (some say they lost 40-50% of revenue while spending extra money on the hotels, testing, and courts). Even if the NBA does that, it means multiple venues, 400-500 million dollars and a break of at least 1-2 months.

That is, if players are even willing to. 60-65 games means a LONG bubble. I'd imagine a lot of players will just opt out of being locked in a hotel away from family and friends for 6 months.

Also if we bubble up, I fully anticipate WCS opts out to be with his wife and child.

This is the key right here. I don't think there is any appetite among the players to do another bubble, let alone for a far longer time than the first one. They had to move heaven and earth to make the bubble happen last season, and that's when the players actually wanted to do it.

I agree that there doesn't seem to be a good answer to this problem. If I were to guess right now, I think the players and the league are just going to try to gut out this season as is. Dealing with the positive tests as they come and postponing games when necessary, and simply hoping for the best.

Those are all good points

I'm watching The Jump right now and they touched on this same topic. The bumble was brought up of course and Brian Windhorst has some interesting feedback on it.

Possibly expanding rosters again

Well, I keep seeing stories about covid vaccine going to waste or just sitting in the freezers. If the general public is not willing to deplete the supply, then maybe people in contact sports could be vaccinated. And it would also be a benefit to their families.

I'm gonna go ahead and say those stories you're hearing are absolute horsesh*t. The demand for the vaccine far, far, far outweighs the current supply.

From the Athletic

The Dallas Mavericks have three players currently quarantining in Denver after one tested positive for COVID-19, while two more were identified as having close contact during a road trip. Dallas returned home without them, played a home game one day later and then was forced to shut down the team’s practice facility when a fourth player entered into the league’s self-isolation protocol. On Monday, at least five more players entered into self-isolation after another player tested positive, a team source says, causing the team to fall below the required eight available players threshold and for the evening’s game to be postponed. If the NBA’s contact tracing identified on-court exposure as a possible transmission concern, the team would likely require more players to isolate themselves, as would the two teams they’ve played since its first player recorded a positive test.

I’m guessing professional athletes, are way down the list, and the fact that they live in different states would make it impossible for them to all get it at once.
