Default Foyle To Orlando

Source: Orlando Magic, Adonal Foyle agree to terms
Tim Povtak
Sentinel Staff Writer
2:34 PM EDT, August 22, 2007

Veteran center Adonal Foyle has agreed to terms with the Orlando Magic, according to a league source, waiting only for his agent/attorney to return to the country to announce the deal. It could come by Friday.

Foyle accepted a contractual buyout earlier this summer from the Golden State Warriors.

Foyle, 32, has played his entire 10-year NBA career with the Warriors, who made him the former Colgate University standout the No. 8 pick of the 1997 NBA Draft.

He is primarily a defensive specialist, who is a better-than-average shot blocker with a limited offensive game.

The Magic expect to use him at both center and power forward, playing behind Dwight Howard and Tony Battie. He will partially fill the void left by the departure of Darko Milicic, who signed with the Memphis Grizzlies.

Magic General Manager Otis Smith would not confirm the agreement with Foyle, saying only: "We are moving in that direction." Foyle's agent, Lon Babby, has been out of the country but is scheduled to return today.

Although several teams were courting Foyle -- including Charlotte and Boston -- coming to Orlando was attractive to Foyle because of the proximity to family still living in the Caribbean, a league source said.

Foyle was born and was raised on the island of Canouan, which is part of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. He also has remained friends with Smith, who formerly worked with the Warriors.

The Magic also will announce the signing of former second-round draft pick Marcin Gortat, who played the past two seasons in Europe. The Magic will sign Foyle to the NBA veteran's minimum of $1.3 million (based on his 10 years of experience). Foyle has been among the NBA's top shot blockers throughout his career.

He was scheduled to make $8.9 million this season and $9.7 million next season with the Warriors. He accepted slightly less from Golden State to become a free agent.

Although still an effective defensive center, he didn't fit into the uptempo, helter-skelter style that was so effective for the Warriors during the playoffs under Coach Don Nelson.

Vet minimum? That's a nice pickup for the Magic. The front line is looking pretty good.

I knew it wouldn't take long for him to find a new team. What a bargain for Orlando and a nice backup addition.

Magic add Foyle to bolster big men

BY JOHN DENTON
FLORIDA TODAY

Orlando Magic general manager Otis Smith pursued Adonal Foyle primarily for his muscle and shot-blocking abilities. But the trickle-down effect of having Foyle around also weighed heavily into the decision to sign the 6-foot-10, 275-pound center.

"Maybe the best thing about getting him is that he will be around (the Magic's headquarters) every day and he'll be somebody going up against Dwight in practice," Smith said, referring to franchise center Dwight Howard. "(Foyle) can play some minutes and really help us out, but most of all he will help Dwight continue to further his development."

Foyle has agreed to a two-year deal with the Magic that will pay him $1.4 million a season. The deal won't become official until Monday at the earliest when Foyle's agent, Lon Babby, returns from a trip out of the country.

Foyle, 32, became available when the Golden State Warriors bought him out of the final three seasons of a six-year, $42 million deal he originally signed in 2004. He fell out of favor in Golden State last season when Don Nelson brought his version of small ball to the Warriors. He played in just 48 games, averaging 2.2 points and 2.6 rebounds a game.

The Magic were desperate to sign another center/power forward type after losing 7-foot shot-blocker Darko Milicic to Memphis in free agency. Orlando already has reached a deal with Polish center Marcin Gortat, and that deal is expected to become official once the buyout with his German team is worked out.

Foyle's forte is his ability to defend centers in the post and swat shots at the rim. Throughout his career, he has ranked among the NBA's leaders in blocks per minute on the court. With the Magic in the same division with bruising centers Shaquille O'Neal, Emeka Okafor and Zaza Pachulia, Foyle's muscle could come in handy. He can spell Tony Battie at center and occasionally play alongside of Howard.

"I like him because he's a good on-ball defender and he gives us somebody with some girth," Smith said. "We have a lot of tall guys, but no one with any real girth. He's a big defender who can help us."

Boston and Charlotte also pursued Foyle, but the 10-year veteran made no secret that he favored Orlando because of its proximity to his Caribbean roots. He hails from tiny Canouan, which is among the cluster of islands that make up St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

Foyle became a U.S. citizen this past March, taking part in a naturalization ceremony in San Francisco as part of a group of 1,150 people from 94 countries who received Americans citizenship.

Was Dallas in the Foyle race in the first place? 'Cause it would be a shame to pass up such a good deal.
