Default Rockets were meant to fly. Mavs up and touch the sky.

Mavs play the lowly Rockets.

No Luka (ankle)
No THJ - (foot) ruled out until at least the playoffs
No Bertans (sore knee)
No Pinson (not really an NBA player)

Gotta get a big game from SD/Brunson to make up for Luka's absence and then make sure Wood doesn't get too comfortable. Wood was 14-18 (78%) from the field and 8-9 from three (89%) against KP in a win against the Wizards (39pts, 10reb, 2ast, 1stl, 1blk)

Mavs are...
1 game behind the Jazz
1.5 games ahead of the Nuggets

Who can step up consistently?

Bad as the Rockets are we are going to struggle without Luka.

Let’s hope Maxi find some resemblance of an offensive game tonight.

But how will we win without KP's defense and rim protection?

What he failed to mention is that KP scored 22 points, 13 rebounds and 4 assist.

He also blocked 5 shots which is something the Mavs defense desperately misses.

But to each of his own because the team as a whole has really slipped defensively if you look at the numbers especially in terms of rim protection.

She.

And please share those stats. Are you talking about raw blocks per game? Defensive numbers? I'd love to see what you have.

If you look at Defensive rating, this team has seen three major phases
Early season - with KP, our defense sucked
Mid season - with KP on the team but injured, our defense was top 5-6
Late season - post KP trade our defense has been okay, but in the 10-17 range

Blocks and rim protection mean shit to me when you let the other guy put up those numbers, whether he was the main defender or not. You can't convince me he's a difference maker on defense if he wasn't saying "put me on Wood" new guy and all. That's an embarrassing line. Hell, Powell and Maxi do better than that. But watch me say that and he goes off tonight! lol

Kleber 1st he allows the easy inside bucket then makes a terrible offensive foul.

This guy might just need a mental break for 1-2 games to get his head right. They should play Chriss and see if he can produce

He's making Brunson expendable in a trade if we can get a legit big.

New York wants Brunson bad wonder if the Mavs might swap him for Robinson if the price tag for Brunson gets too high.

Looks like all we really need this summer is a center.

But man, if Powell can keep this up, then I am more optimistic about the playoffs.

The thing that stands out though is that you didn't see as many careless turnovers between the two.

That is my biggest gripe with Luka. He will usually have around 6-8 turnovers on average with half of them just being careless passes.

It's almost on par with turnover machine Russell Westbrick on most nights

After last night, seems like Mavs will be staying at 5 and/or fighting for 4.

2 games up on 6. Warriors are 3 games up on jazz.

Hopefully they can get home court vs Jazz.

I'd actually rather play the Jazz. I always abide by the theory that the team with the best player on it has the advantage. Jokic is better than any player on the Jazz by a good margin.

I'm certainly not afraid of the Jazz.

I agree and have said as much. I'm still very on the fence about giving Brunson $20+MM when he can be bottled up any given nights and especially in the post season. But if they believe he can get over that hump, there's no denying what he brings to the team with secondary ball handling and playmaking abilities, and an option to run the offense without Luka or to simply give Luka a break.

Could a SNT with the Knicks work where they get Brunson and we get Robinson? Do we need to do so or can we sign Robinson outright? I think cap implications prevent the latter.

How could you guys be on the fence about Brunson after this game? I want a big too, but Brunson and Mitchell aren't equal value. Brunson enables Luka to rest and take games off if need be.

This is an issue that swings back and forth, but I just don't think you can replace Brunson's production this summer unless you think THJ can start not sucking. I'd rather just try and dump him and keep Brunson.

I think Brunson is too valuable to give up for "just" Robinson...

I truly believe the way Kidd has things going with having two additional playmakers who can create and score off the dribble or set others up is too good of a thing to just throw away. Brunson is a friggin' bowling ball and i'd assess this upcoming playoff run very carefully before doing something rash. His versatility to play on/off the ball really gives the Mavs a ton of potential on the offensive side of things and his defense isn't terrible.

edit: so yeah i agree with DHWS. Keep brunson, dump THJ and get what you can for him. Just need one vet big man to plug into the rotation. Keep this year's draft pick and draft the best big you believe will do well with the team - oscar, mark williams, koloko, possibly Liddell if you think he can guard bigs and serve as a rim protector at the NBA level. Need a young big we can grow and develop with this squad.

Put this in perspective. Brunson is shooting 53%! from the field in March and 42% from three at 17 ppg. That's called reliability. Even in February, 49f%g and 45%3 shooting. How many other guards have shot 50% from the floor this season?

It's almost surreal that he shoots that good, and I think his emergence is the dark horse reason why you were able to trade KP not knowing Dinwiddie would be this good.

We have a killer guard rotation. You don't mess with that unless it totally falls apart in the playoffs.

You both make good points, but I guess I should of said of course you wait and see how it plays out. I've seen enough to give me pause on him. I'd love for him to prove me wrong in the playoffs, because that's where you earn your $20MM+ in my opinion.

I think if we didn't have so much tied up in Bertans & THJ I would keep Brunson at any cost. If he gets an annual $22m+ offer you must think hard about keeping him versus a SnT.

Understand that line of thinking for sure. Is $22MM the ceiling AAV for you? If not, what would be a realistic target for a contract that would make both sides happy?

If THJ could handle the ball worth a damn, then sure, you consider it. He can't, and that just puts too much pressure on Dinwiddie who has fit like a glove. Whatever is going on between him, Brunson, and Luka is working.

It's also proof you get as much talent as possible regardless of fit.

I would re-sign Brunson 100 times out of 100. Unless you have a trade for someone of equal or greater value, you are shooting yourself in the foot. Nuggets may have enough talent to let talent go for nothing. Mavs certainly don't.

Trade THJ and Bullock for cap space, but don't let Brunson go for nothing.

I also think that a Luka/SD/JB team with a decent rookie big could make some waves and is worth rolling with.

I forget who said it on Twitter but any snt would be difficult with Brunson.

Not sure where you saw this. A double sign and trade deal with the Knicks makes the most sense — it would be similar to the deal that sent KD to Brooklyn and D’Angelo Russell to the Warriors.

Example: Mavs sign JB to deal worth $20-22m a year; Knicks sign Robinson to deal worth $14-16m a year. Mavs trade JB for Robinson + Immanuel Quickley.

Not saying I would necessarily pull the trigger on that, but I would definitely explore it. Mavs have leverage due to Knicks cap situation and having JB’s bird rights. Depending on how much the Knicks like him you might even get a pick.
