Want to see more of Exum and DJJ to see what they got.

Less THJ

Grant looked good after settling in. Lively beast.

5:45 left in 4th. Josh and Lively both tip an offensive board, then both circle back and follow the ball on a 3pt shot and Lively flushed the putback.

Those 2 guys were great. We need that athletic hustle. I didn't quite expect a 16/10 from Lively.

The addition of Lively and Grant already makes this team significantly better than last season, I think. Both guys are exactly what we needed.

Kidd played a rookie 31 minutes in his first nba game. He even had 4 fouls. This seems way more important than Seth Curry getting minutes over?who exactly?

There was still absolutely 0 reason for Lively not to start, but at least Powell didn't play and we won.

THJ. We need to get rid of some of our depth. Hardy, THJ, Maxi, Dwight are the ones I would be looking to package for an upgrade.

The Lively game really isn't that surprising. You've heard nothing but good things from him in camp and last game he was blocking 7 foot centers from behind whilst also doing reverse dunks like it was nothing. When you have a high BBIQ and fundamentals, then the sky is the limit.

Bonus for using "whilst"...
Love what I'm seeing in Lively - but unfortunately (with JKidd) he would not have had those minutes if Powell had been healthy.
I really like Powell the person but Lively is so much better all around than DP.
Grant Williams 50/50/100 tonight in his Mavs debut

We need Panda Hank to make a Grant Williams highlight reel!

Yeah, if Powell played, then we probably lose. But the FO loves him, so there isn't much we can do about it.

The reality is not that Lively is the next coming of Bill Russell. The reality is our center talent is so bad that it makes him look that much better.

And I'd give Holmes a shot too.

Yea. The proof is there. It's not a debate. That is the best lineup you can roll out.

Holmes need to be playing. DP needs to get spot minutes.

Maxi and Thj need to be moved. Those are guys you have to keep on a short leash and Kidd doesn't really have a hand on thr leash. Thj will shoot you out of a game and kill momentum faster than he will boost the game. Maxi makes a lot of mistakes and still has the deer in thr headlights.

Agreed. I'm not sure what went into Maxi starting, but I kind of got the DJJ starting nod. Still, I'm not sure matchups should dictate your starting lineup that much. Can always make quick subs if it's that bad, but generally that lineup will cover most...

Quite a bit of overreacting in here, especially early on.

The graphic they put up eventually to show the guys from last year that are no longer here vs all the new faces really puts into perspective that this team will have growing pains. That doesn't even take into account that Kyrie really is still finding his footing here after a lost second half last season and some injuries.

Lively was fantastic, Williams will be our steady Eddy, Kyrie will shoot better, Green's role will expand, Hardy will be added scoring punch and the latter two will eat into THJ minutes.

I think this team will be good but it will take a deadline move to nudge them into true contention. The frontcourt is super thin IMO and a bigger rebounding/defending type of PF/C would be smart to add with Lively.

Josh just knows the system and team better than DJJ. He is becoming more reliable and needs to be in that lineup

Allowing 43 points in the first quarter against a bottom 4 team in the league last year will do that.

Impressive close to a shit show start. I'm glad I didn't turn it off after that 1st half recurring nightmare of last season. Luka has no f's to give when it comes to taking this seriously. He'll be on a farm with his goats and chickens before long and that will be okay with me.

Continuing on the Lively train...everyone keeps saying the "Luke effect" with regards to Lively's performance, but how about the Lively effect for Luka?

Just watch the highlights and you see that Lively being such a rim threat allows Doncic to work on offense down low.

The defense will now have to scramble in utter confusion on whether to guard Luka or defend the lob to Lively.

Post game. Good stuff from Kidd. Logical and I'll continue to support him even though he'll eventually put DP out there.

I'll be present Friday night.

side note** Williams will be a successful NBA coach someday.

Spurs were 29th in OFFRTG and we allowed 43 points in the quarter. That is not a great trend.

I dig that we were able to claw back into this and tie it near the end and had some clutch daggers (two assists to Kyrie from Luka and a Luka three), but the fact remains that we still crap the bed at the beginning of games. That was the trend for 82 games last year and it continued this year.

The one good thing defensively was the rebounding. We out-rebounded them which is big no matter who we are playing since rebounding is our biggest weakness. Spurs were 12th in rebounds per game last season, so that's not a small thing.

I enjoyed watching happy Luka last night. Most of last season he seemed frustrated, angry, and sad. It's just one game but it was great to see him having fun on the court.

So based off of last year and not accounting for healthy roster plus Wemby and other additions. I mean, Spurs won't be an offensive juggernaut, but I'd expect them to be far from 29th again.

It's early in the season and Mavs had a lot of roster turnover. Slow starts are going to happen.

Yeah. It makes zero sense to look at last year?s stats for the Spurs, and draw any conclusions. It?s a different team, and they were tanking for Wemby. They were trying to win last night.

Just based on the minutes he received and the fact that he closed, it?s obvious that Lively is viewed as the starter by the coaching staff. In the postgame interview, Kidd said the reason he didn?t start is that they were trying to protect him from foul trouble, because they needed him to win. I don?t like the logic, but it?s not a worrisome answer. Wemby was limited for foul trouble, but I?m guessing Pop would say it was a valuable learning experience for the rookie.

By kids post game response, it seems like they feel obligated to DP. He also mentioned Maxi and team defense and i dont get that. Maxi isnt the same defender he was a few year's ago. Lively brings so much more to the table.

Its clear that most of the players think Tim is a bit of a leader and spark plug, but someone has to get through to him that if you miss a few 3s in a row and someone works their ass off to get an offensive rebound, you dont get to just stand out there and rip another one. He has to mix up his game when his shot isnt falling. His instinct is to shoot himself back on on track and this team cant afford that against good teams. Thats when coaches, Luka, Kyrie, Grant, whoever...needs to let him know. The old "shooters gotta shoot" phrase that they have thrown around during his slumps needs to be done.

Kidd's reasoning for not starting Lively is a stupid one. He'll always be prone to foul trouble with high minutes and the fact that he is a young center. The fact that he played 31 minutes completely negates that theory anyway.

For everyone who is worried about allowing 43 points in the first- I think this goes a long way to explaining it. Maxi was -12 last night. Lively was +20. Also, DJJ was -1, Green was +4.

Start Lively and Green. Boom, problem solved.

Of course this means we have to rely on Kidd to put two and two together, so... fingers crossed.

Just watch the highlights and you see that Lively being such a rim threat allows Doncic to work on offense down low.

The defense will now have to scramble in utter confusion on whether to guard Luka or defend the lob to Lively.

I noticed as the game went on he seemed more loose in the offense especially when it came to passing, with always having the lob threat.

He's DP with size and defense. Couldn't have drafted a better fit. People hate DP because he's small, defensively challenged, and Canadian or whatever (gay? bright?), but he works because he's always been one of the best vertical threats in the league, and Luka only needs lob threats and shooters to be successful on offense.
