I havent been paying super close attention nor do I have a high bball IQ...

But...wasnt JRich on Booker and DFS on Paul? I get that Booker sat most of 1st and 2nd quarters...should JRich guard Paul and DFS on Booker?

I saw Maxi shut down Paul and WCS caused him to turn back around and then pass it.

Who should be guarding Paul?

Effort was there. Defense too. Paul was just nuts with his long fadeaway. 3p shooting still sucks but should get better.

We are also just freaking unlucky...in the last minutes alone off rebounds fell into the lap of a Suns player and they scored 5 points out of it

My fantasy trade before this team falls completely out the playoff race

Markkanen, LaVine lead way as Bulls beat Knicks 110-102.

It's so much in their head now... It's like a shank in golf... if you let it get your head it's tough to get past it and right now that's where the Mavs are.

OH yeah and BTW in back to back games RC never bothered to trap or take the ball out of Chris Paul hands.

And that last second shot was also a poor play design.

But credit Phoenix they had a young talented team that they knew this off season needed a veteran leader and they didn't worry about C.Paul age or contract matching their young core timeline.

This feels like the game where the playoffs became out of reach for this team. Thats melodramatic, but they dont have the mental toughness to dig out of the hole.

Love that point. Everyone sits around talking about timelines and age. You get the playmaker, your team makes the plays. Its that simple.

Yeah they are solid but the team I'm most impressed with is Houston

They have been lights out on the defensive end of the floor and S.Silas deserves major prop's for keeping that team focused.

He's hands down coach of the year as of today.

Mavs are in trouble because at one point I thought this division was theirs without any challenge but look at what Memphis has done since Morant came back and they still don't have J.Jackson.

The Spurs are solid and I think Pop's has them on the right track again.

I'm not sure the Mavs are going to even win this division now.

I'm doing my best to be patient with Rick but it's undeniable that he isn't getting even the most obvious shi right. Drawing up busted ass plays, having stupid defensive assignments such as Dfs on Paul when he is hulk smashing. He is digging a hole with even the most loyal fans of him and the Mavs.

Will the real KP stand up?... or gtfo!

How do we get Drummond.

LOL

Enough is enough

For all the talk about what Drummond can't do he seems just fine in Cleveland helping that team become really competitive again.

The Mavs have probably lost 2-4 games this year just on poor rebounding alone.

Drummond would at least have fixed that issue and if you add those 2-4 wins to this team they would be in a much better situation today.

The dude just killed Anthony Davis the other night.

I think it's time they just allow KP to be a 7'3 SG and go get Drummond so that way if KP shot isn't falling that cool because we'd have Drummond to gobble up offensive rebounds.

But that type of logic or thinking doesn't seem to apply to the Mavs.

SMC0007...can you please explain the DFS on Paul hate? I am genuinely curious what you would have done.

Why is Richardson the better defender to put on Paul? Is it because he is a better defender? Because Paul was cooking DFS and something new needed to be tried?

Paul was unconscious today. Maybe Mavs wanted to prevent Booker from getting hot so they put Richardson on him. Booker is usually more of a threat from 3...maybe we didnt want him to get hot and get in a hole fast. I dont know.

Here is what I saw two times...I saw Maxi completely shut Paul down. I dont know if that was the only two times Maxi got switched on Paul...but Paul had to pass out. Looked like Paul couldnt do anything with Maxi's length and quick feet. Maybe Mavs thought DFS's length could bother Paul(it didnt).

At the end of the game when they took Maxi out for THJ. Maybe they should have left Maxi in and subbed out DFS for THJ. Put Maxi on Paul because he shut Paul down at least twice. And it wouldnt be for a long period of time since it was the end of the game. I get it...bad time to experiment in a much needed win for the Mavs.

Anyway...as a casual fan...I dont understand how it is criminal to have DFS on Paul while JRich is on Booker? What do I not know/understand?

KP can't guard literally anyone. Absolutely embarrassing on PnR defense...which coincidentally is the most common play in the game.

Drummond in, KP out, team is way better.

DFS has never had success on small quick guards. He has proven that he can't keep up with those types, especially CP3. We specifically went out to get a quick guard defender in JRich and then we don't even use him to defend questionably the shiftiest quickest guard in the game. We have proof as recent as last game vs the Suns, where cp3 went off and literally won the game in the 4th Q. You put JRich on Paul and DFS on Booker. DFS is a decent defender but he is not the great defender that some people think he is and thr biggest threat is the experienced vet who is creating offense. Rick also could have utilized Green to chase Booker around.

Maxi is our most versatile defender and imo the best defender we have. He did a great job on Paul the few times he was switched but it's not a strategy you can go to when Paul has the ball up top with a full shot clock and set offense.

A big problem is the PnR defense when KP is on the floor. Ypu basically have to switch and KP is on skates vs Paul. On the other hand Maxi is fully capable of defending the PnR and he has proven to be effective countering the size mismatches.

Notice how Toronto and Milwaukee both tried to take the ball out of Luka's hand in b2b games like two weeks ago. Force other guys to beat you or make plays on their own.

Small little defensive thing that Phoenix tried tonight.

So ask yourself after watching Paul destroy us Saturday night why didn't Dallas try to get the ball out of his hands at some point tonight?

Instead we stick with these vanilla defensive schemes just refusing to try anything different.

Things fell apart in the third quarter and it carried over into the fourth.
The Mavericks were up 77-66 with four plus minutes in the third quarter. Then the Suns started throwing soft doubles at Luka Doncic as he dribbled up the court. He made the right pass and Dallas ended up with a wide open corner three which they missed. The next possession Maxi Kleber got the ball from Doncic at the free throw line. He threw a wild pass off the back board. Then they had Brunson bring the ball up and it resulted in Hardaway missing an open jumper. After that Brunson missed a driving lay up. Meanwhile the Suns cut the lead down to three. The Mavericks escaped the quarter up five.

Then a unit of mixed starters and bench players allowed the Suns to go on a 10-0 run with Luka Doncic on the bench. A Brunson lay up and one salvaged things some, but going -7 in the few minutes Doncic is resting is very bad. The foundations of the loss started in the third and were on full display midway through the quarter.

They did throw some very soft traps at CP in the half court, only a couple times that I saw.
I agree they could’ve mixed up their looks a little more.

If Suns take it out of Doncic's hands, we only have Richardson and THJ (who were actually darn good, but still not nearly as deadly as Doncic).

If Mavs take it out of Paul's hands, they have Booker wrecking us. And he did.

That's the difference in the two teams and why it's easy to couch quarterback this team but if you're spending all your energy keeping it out of Paul's hands 1) He's smart and wiley and will beat you anyway and 2) You're leaving yourself open to get absolutely wrecked by Booker. You can barely keep it out of one guy's hands. It's impossible to prevent it from two.
