This may be a funny, but he may actually be thrown to the wolves if Luka missed serious time.

Interesting situation brewing here
14: The number of combined minutes from Dwight Powell and Dorian Finney-Smith in the second half.
Powell and Finney-Smith started the game, but by the second half they were mostly glued to the bench. Brunson and Reggie Bullock took their place, and the Mavericks ran away with the game. They outscored the Nuggets by 14 in the fourth quarter and by 19 in the second half. Brunson and Bullock are just more dynamic players than Powell and Finney-Smith. Brunson can score and distribute off the dribble, and Bullock is a better shooter than Finney-Smith. Simply put, Jason Kidd let his best players cook, and Dallas won.

I mean, Bullock made one three to DFS's 2 so let's not act like he is the second coming of Seth Curry.
But Bullock does have some sort of "it" that doesn't really show up in the box score.

Despite not shooting well so far this year, Bullock has more gravity than DFS has. On offense, that's the "it" that I see. I saw a stat that said that DFS is left wide open from 3 more than anyone in the league that plays significant minutes. Other teams are simply willing to live with an open DFS 3 pointer.
So even though Bullock only hit 1 three to DFS's 2 today, I still think Bullock helps the spacing a bit more. Not that DFS sucks or Bullock is Seth Curry, but it's enough of a difference that I like seeing Bullock out there at the end of the game.

Luka and KP seem to finally click.
Now let’s think about the state of the Mavs if the FO would have gotten anybody to help them in the last 2 off seasons. Think about DeMar DeRozan on this team.

DeMar is overrated, and doesn't really move the needle for us. We don't need scoring, we need defense and three point shooting, he does neither. We need an OG Anunoby, or someone like him, not a DeMar DeRozan.

It's odd that anyone still holds this opinion. OG Anunoby would be great sure, but Derozan would have fit real nice. The only thing that makes him less valuable to us once the season started is how Brunson is killing it. We don't need more 3pt shooters, we need the other 3&D guys we have to actually hit them.

I don't think Luka misses much time...maybe a game. But I'd be fine with Jones getting back up mins. I'd rather that than Burke.

Yeah, Derozan's 38 points he had against the Lakers is something I surely don't want on the Mavs.
And even if someone tried to argue against such production in the name of defense, welp, Mavs need ball handlers too.

LOL
Sure a deadly midrange shooter and scorer is way overrated especially come playoff time
So having midrange shooters like K. Leonard, Paul George and Chris Paul guys on that level couldn't possibly help Dallas because they don't shoot a high volume of 3's
Someone with an above average mid range game when 3 point shots are falling in the playoffs especially late in games is exactly what this team has needed for years.
BTW it's funny how DeMar wouldn't move the needle for Dallas but in Chicago he's done exactly just that....

What a disingenuous argument.
Chicago literally used trade and cap resources to add Vucevic, Ball, DeMar, and Caruso. That's literally three star/ borderline-stars and a solid contributor in a single year and four of their top five scorers are all new. Of course the Bulls moved the needle-- they went from having the worst talent in the league to having one of the best assortments of talent of any team.
Had they kept Markannen and just added Demar, their transformation would not have been half of what it is and no one would be talking about the Bulls right now.
Yeah Demar is good. He's a starting-caliber guy. He would have helped us, but let's not pretend that 1) he wanted to come here 2) we had what it took to get him as an over-the-cap team, and 3) that he would have made us as good as the Bulls if he was our solitary acquisition.

So it's a weird conundrum with the defense. We are ranked poorly with the opponent fg and 3 pt percentage, but we aren't allowing as many fg or 3 pt attempts. We're 7th in both fg and 3 pt opponent attempts. We are also 6th in opp ft made and 7th in attempted. So it's nice we're not sending teams to the line.
We're also 13th in rebounding which is quite surprising actually.

1 and 2 are a moot point. The debate isn't about assuming the Mavs did their due diligence and knew ANYTHING about Demar and his intentions before everyone else found out. It's fair conversation in a different setting.
Just because they added Caruso and Ball, it doesn't exactly minimize what Demar means to them. 27/5/4 is what you would call really really good.

I like what the Bulls did. Mavs couldn't have, but I respect what they did. I also respect DeMar's game. He's a solid player now working in a system that works for him. I'm happy for him.
He's just not in the Mavs discussion because we didn't get him and probably couldn't have.

Bulls look like a top 2 seed in the east. If they didnt add Lonzo and Caruso, Id still guess theyre a top 4 seed. We can go back to those offseason threads where there was such ridiculous conversation around why Demar wouldnt fit on the Mavs lol. I doubt the FO looked into him, and I wonder what couldve got him here anyway, if anything.
Their team is just so fun to watch. Right now, Mavs, Warriors, and Bulls are the teams I watch each night. Havent caught any Wiz games though.

There were too many folks saying he wouldn't fit here. By too many I mean there are a lot of solid posters here and different angles which is why I was so surprised to see the idea that he wouldn't fit. Not taking anything away from those posters because we all swing and miss here every once and a while but that was wrong.
I agree fully that the FO didn't know in advanced what DD was going to do before he announced IF they even considered him. We don't tamper and don't even come close to it. It would literally be the worst time to dabble in a tamper too with a brand spanking new GM or a GM getting booted.
Cuban might as well had tampered because the way we draft poorly, it wouldn't hurt us if we lost a cpl picks.

Sounds like it was a two-dog race between the Lakers and Bulls.
Lakers and Bulls were offering 26mill
Mavs had 9.5mill
Mavs were never in the DeRozan race in the first place.

Really solid come back win last night. KP was great!
I know it was mainly bad luck Luka getting injured but WTF was he doing flying in for a block(which he couldn’t make) up 11? Just silliness.

It's total hyperbole. We changed our record against winning teams from 0-4 to 1-4 by beating a good team on the second night of a B2B. We're still negative in net rating, 19th in offense and 16th in defense.
The team has potential, but they've really shown nothing (yet).
We saw Luka play MVP-level the last two seasons. We've seen some flashes from KP at being a star (although his 20-8 on 44/35% isn't amazing yet). We've seen occasional genius on both offense and defense, but we also have stretches of 4-10 minutes every game where we look as clueless as a middle school team playing the Jordan Bulls.
This team just needs to keep improving. Honestly I'd be happy to get out of the first round this year.

I'm admittedly not good with the cap and various rules surrounding it. Could we have renounced rights to THJ to sign Demar first then resign THJ to go over the cap? Or is that only possible while still holding rights? The cap hold is what prevents having the space to sign Demar outright, no?

Whats crazy is he said this on espn before the game...Im sitting here wondering how many are watching the games.
But AFTER last night...I still dont know. We also had people saying this last season though.
Mavs looked great and beat their first above 500 team.
That team also was on a B2B and 3 games in 4 nights.

I'd love to think he's right, buuuut. I still believe that we heavily rely on role players playing above their norm in big situations. That isn't the makeup of true contender IMO. I'd love nothing more than to be proven wrong.
Optimistic side of it is:
Brunson is no longer a background player forced to accept a bigger role. He is legit.
Frank has improved. Stepping into shots and knocking WAY more down than I thought he would. He's been pretty damn reliable.
Maxi, before the recent oblique strain, seems to have his athleticism and agility back.
KP ....eh I don't wanna jinx it.
Replacing Jrich with Bullock has not yet proven to be much of an upgrade. Surely that will show soon.

Bad news incoming...Donic has a left knee sprain AND a left ankle sprain. I know he his iron man, but I'm still calling a week at least. Ankle sprain you can play through. Knee sprain is a whole 'nother cucumber. Esp on the same leg.

Damn I thought it might be slightly more serious than a one game sit. Hopefully hes good in less than 2 weeks.
So much for finding out how these next two weeks against contenders would go.

As I said earlier: wtf was he doing flying in for a weak side block up 13 with 44 seconds left. Half the time the dude can’t be bothered to close out on shooters or rotate defensively and then suddenly he has to sell out to stop the Austin Rivers layup attempt? It’s of a piece with a very strange start to the season for him.
