Default New Orleans tearing down historical monuments

http://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/natio...FlowFB_NYBrand

This is shameful. Just because you don't agree with something that happened in history doesn't mean you get to rewrite or erase it. And it has already been passed into law that confederate soldiers are honored as American war veterans. I had ancestors on both sides of the conflict as well. I can guarantee you both sides would be rolling in their graves over this.

This is where social media has completely lost its way. People who know NOTHING about history try to force their ignorant will on things like this.

Yes. It's shameful a monument to white supremacy was taken down.

What other nation clings to a shameful past under the guise of historical recognizance the way the U.S. does? Let me know where I can go see the tribute to Hitler in Germany.

Quote:
In 1874, the Crescent City White League attempted to overthrow a biracial Reconstruction government in New Orleans after the Civil War. That attempt failed, but white supremacist Democrats later took control of the state.
An inscription added in 1932 said the Yankees withdrew federal troops and "recognized white supremacy in the South" after the group challenged Louisiana's biracial government after the Civil War. In 1993, these words were covered by a granite slab with a new inscription, saying the obelisk honors "Americans on both sides" who died and that the conflict "should teach us lessons for the future."

Yes because comparing anything to the Nazis is always a rational comparison.

Read an actual history book about the civil war and then get back to me.

And we might as well take George Washington off the one dollar bill if we are going to be consistent with this whole slavery thing.

What's funny is that I consider myself liberal for the most part, but today's social media liberal is an entirely different animal. Even Bill freakin' Maher trashes them.

They lead a social media campaign to basically rewrite history as they see fit in a totally blind and ignorant way. But hey, most people in this country just don't care about history. As long as they can tweet and FB on their iphones, then who cares right?

Well... maybe we should?

But where exactly does that end? By that logic, we should just rid ourselves of anything and anyone that had a connection to slavery. Just burn New Orleans down since they were obviously pro confederacy at the time, and there was rampant slave trading in the French Quarter.

In fact, we should just forget about any good our military did in WW1 and WW2 since there was black segregation in both of those wars.

The Vietnam War was highly controversial and soldiers were spit on when they came back. Why have those memorials when that war was so unpopular?

Perhaps it's because we should remember history and the negatives that come with such history. They should serve as reminders and teach us lessons.

Statues of Beauregard and Lee can serve as reminders of what it means to fight for an unjust cause. Tearing them down though doesn't do anyone any good. You can't erase the past just because you don't agree with it.

The Civil War is such a nuanced and intricate war that it would be foolish not to have such monuments and talk about what it mean't to have leaders on both sides of the conflict. To define them as "oh they were just pro slavery so f them" is so unbelievably ignorant that it just boggles my mind.

There's a difference between remembering history and celebrating it... We're talking about a predominately-black community choosing not to have symbols of oppression thrown in their face on the daily -- their town, their right... It's not like anyone is re-writing the history books here (like Texas erasing Thomas Jefferson from the Founding Fathers).
