Mavs trade - Breaking news from ESPN 103.3
Listening to Galloway and co. on 103.3fm and Nellie was on he said this:
A trade of Dickau + draft pick for Darrell Armstrong from Hornets is now pending. Nellie said this is because Harris is regressing and needs time to work on his game.
Maybe this is a cruel joke the radio guys are playing on me... anyone listening to this stuff?
May not be such a bad deal IMO if it's true.

RE:Mavs trade - Breaking news from ESPN 103.3
Didn't sound like a joke. Damned good trade from what I can tell. Armstrong is extremely quick, is a good defensive player and pushes the ball very well. He'll definitely fix the assist problem with this team and bring a more uptempo style. Not to mention, he is a good half-court player as well.

RE:Mavs trade - Breaking news from ESPN 103.3
There has to be more to the trade. Do we have a trade exception? Dickau makes under $900K and Armstrong makes $3.2M (Hoopshype) or $2.2M (DMN). Armstrong is in his last year of his contract though.

I don't like trading away draft picks for temporary solutions. I hope this is a second rounder.

RE:Mavs trade - Breaking news from ESPN 103.3
Armstrong for Dickeau is an absolute steal, even at this stage of Armstrong's career. Considering the youth that the Mavs have (Daniels, Howard, Benga, Pavel, and Harris) we can certainly afford a pick that to go with that IMO.

RE: Mavs trade - Breaking news from ESPN 103.3
Dallas trades: PG Dan Dickau (1.3 ppg, 0.3 rpg, 0.3 apg in 4.0 minutes)
Dallas receives: PG Darrell Armstrong (10.1 ppg, 3.4 rpg, 4.6 apg in 29.4 minutes)
Change in team outlook: +8.8 ppg, +3.1 rpg, and +4.3 apg.
New Orleans trades: PG Darrell Armstrong (10.1 ppg, 3.4 rpg, 4.6 apg in 29.4 minutes)
New Orleans receives: PG Dan Dickau (1.3 ppg, 0.3 rpg, 0.3 apg in 4.0 minutes)
Change in team outlook: -8.8 ppg, -3.1 rpg, and -4.3 apg.
TRADE ACCEPTED
Due to Dallas and New Orleans being over the cap, the 15% trade rule is invoked. Dallas and New Orleans had to be no more than 115% plus $100,000 of the salary given out unless trade exceptions were used for the trade to be accepted, which did happen here. This trade satisfies the provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

RE:Mavs trade - Breaking news from ESPN 103.3
http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=1676231
Tuesday, December 2, 2003
Associated Press
ORLANDO, Fla. -- Charges against Darrell Armstrong were dismissed Tuesday by a judge who ruled it couldn't be proved beyond a reasonable doubt that the Hornets guard intentionally struck an officer.
The dismissal came on the trial's second day. Armstrong could have faced a sentence ranging from probation to six years in prison if convicted of felony battery on an officer and misdemeanor resisting arrest without violence.
"I just felt like I wasn't in the wrong," Armstrong said.
Armstrong's attorney had argued the NBA player accidentally hit Officer Teresa Joyce, swinging his arm in reaction to her touching him as she tried to escort him off the street outside an Orlando nightclub on July 7.
Circuit Judge Bob Wattles said Joyce did nothing wrong by placing her hand on Armstrong's back or shoulder. However, the judge said it was questionable whether Armstrong knew it was an officer who was pushing him toward the sidewalk.
"The judge is the expert in determining the law and I respect his decision," Joyce said.
Defense attorney Zachary Stoumbos suggested Joyce, who sprained a finger during the encounter, was pursuing the criminal case to bolster a civil lawsuit. Joyce said Tuesday she hadn't decided whether to sue.
The case's dismissal came after friends of Armstrong who witnessed the encounter testified Tuesday that Joyce was "aggressive" in trying to get Armstrong off the street. A day earlier, Joyce had testified that Armstrong reacted "very violently" after she approached him.
"For someone to come up from behind him, it's impossible to know who it was," Orlando Magic forward Drew Gooden testified. "It was a natural reaction for anybody."
Armstrong, who played nine seasons with the Orlando Magic before signing with New Orleans during the offseason, said the arrest and trial had affected his playing. He did sit-ups in the hallway during breaks in the trial.
The Magic and the Hornets played each other later Tuesday in Orlando. Armstrong said he wouldn't give Gooden any breaks.
"I was happy he testified for me," Armstrong said. "But I'm not going to give him free lay-ups tonight."
The Hornets won 100-91.

Interesting indeed. I do think Terry should start with an uptempo style of ball. Plus, Armstrong has been backing Baron Davis up in NO so I guess he is suited for a backup role... mind I say an effective backup role.

Nice deal for the Mavs. You traded away a guy that never plays for a guy who can come in and contribute. I would've traded Stack away for Armstrong. When I heard Nellie say they just did a trade I was hoping it was Stack that would come out of his mouth.

Hopefully nothing. I'm thinking Harris is the one their trying to slide out of the rotation. But on Nellie's team the guy whose playing the best that particular time will get the most minutes.

It can't be a first rounder. It would have to be a second rounder right? I think the Mavs have already traded away the MAX number of picks possible. You can't trade away picks that are more than a few years out.

I like this trade. Darrell Armstrong is a very quick player who will push the ball, hit the open shot, and distribute the pass decent. And giving up Dickau wasn't much of a loss.

I would like to see Armstrong start because he is easily the best passer and ballhandler on the team. However, when he was with Orlando he was absolutely great coming off the bench. He has been very good in this role for every team that he played for.

But Harris was the rookie of the month!
j/k
Is it a good thing that Nellie lost patience with Harris? I mean, this is supposed to be our future. I'd think he'd develop quicker by living through the ups and downs of an 82 game season. And where's the transition? Shouldn't we have tried brining harris off the bench before before ripping him completly from the rotation? Just a thought.

Wow, as minor as this trade looks to the rest of the NBA it should be a huge difference maker for us.

so the Harris experiment was a failure....Start Terry and give Armstrong Harris's old minutes??? I dont like that at all. If Harris is going to be something "special", which everyone wanted to call him, this is not the way to get him ready.
I like the trade but not the implications

I don't want to speak for Nellie but I believe he wants to bring Harris along slowly. He doesn't want us to depend on Harris in order for us to win games so he made a trade to get Darrell Armstrong. Harris should still see anywhere fom 15-20 minutes a game. IMO, he is still able to develop in those type of minutes.

The Mavs are not a team that is rebuilding atleast that's the impression I get from watching them. We shouldn't have to struggle in order for Harris to develop. He will come along with time but no way even with 40 minutes a game Harris would've developed into the player we need him to be by the end of the season. I give him 2 years at best.

Nellie was the one who decided that Harris was good enough that he needed to start him. Now he's decided to drop him from the rotation entirely?
I really like Darrell Armstrong, and would typically have no problem with bringing him in. In fact, I was hoping we'd acquire Armstrong instead of Best in the summer of 2003. That said, I do NOT agree with the idea of bringing Armstrong in to take Harris' minutes.

I'd like Harris to come off the bench and have Terry start. How does one go from the starting line up to being the odd man out just like that? I agree with the people here that think Armstrong shouldn't be brought here to take harris' minutes. He won't just be the odd man out and participate only in training and develop. He needs minutes to develop, no one gets better from sitting on the bench.

Nellie just wanted to have a deep bench. A "spark" off the bench by starting Harris over Terry. I don't believe for a second Harris outplayed Terry in training camp.

RE: Mavs trade - Breaking news from ESPN 103.3
Despite his Rookie of the month award I don't think Harris has been playing that well. He shows flashes, but needs to work on consistency, passing, ballhandling and a lot of other things. Sitting and watching during the games may be the best thing for him at this moment. Rome wasn't built in a day and neither are NBA point guards. If anything, having someone like Armstrong around may just accelerate the process because he can see first hand how a point guard should play.

Let me be clear: I think the trade itself is a no-brainer. Dickau had nothing in his bag. Armstrong is having a terrible shooting year, but he's a good player even at his advanced age. He will give the team an experienced playmaker -- something they really don't have right now.
That said, I want Harris to develop. He won't without playing.

Proof that the Hardline are basketball idiots. With no way to prepare for the Mavs trade, they are fumbling all over themselves. Hammer is saying Armstrong is a 'tweener. Rhyner is saying they need more of a pure point. Eeeeee.

Barrett looked good last night. Easily their most effective point guard. Armstrong would've been a great addition to the Rockets, but lets be realistic. The rockets are in the same division as the Mavs so we want them to do poorly. I am glad they didn't get Armstrong.

Did Nellie say Devin would no longer start? This could just be a move for depth and not to replace Devin from the lineup.... Nelson could cut down his minutes more and still have two PGs to use the whole game if Devin isn't playing well.
