Default Dallas/Rockets swap picks

(taken from the DMN)

Mavericks-Rockets swap:

Dallas traded the draft rights to guard Vassilis Spanoulis, which the Mavs selected with the 50th overall pick, to the Houston Rockets for the draft rights to Luis Flores, whom Houston selected 55th overall.

Spanoulis, a native of Greece, averaged 6.3 points and 4.3 assists in 21 games for Maroussi Telestet Athens in the FIBA Europe League and 11.0 points and 3.3 assists in 26 Greek league games.

Flores played his final three collegiate seasons at Manhattan after transferring from Rutgers. He finished his career as the Jaspers' all-time leading scorer (2,160 points) and averaged 24.3 points per game over his final two seasons.

Why didn't the Mavs just draft Flores in the first place? Did they get anything else?

just saw this up and posted in the draft thread, but Flores is a pure player. An Iverson clone if I have ever seen one. Great step, speed, offense, and gritty as hell on defense. Of course he is undersized for a SG. But I really LOVE our draft now, I mean this was a great draft, could be one of the best in the Mavs history.

The Mavericks made a third deal late Thursday, sending their second-rounder -- 50th pick Vassilis Spanoulis of Greece -- to Houston for the 55th pick, point guard Luis Flores of Manhattan. Nelson said Flores would play overseas next season.

Mavericks: Flores acquired in trade with Rockets

by Fanball Staff - Fanball.com
Friday, June 25, 2004

News

The Dallas Mavericks acquired guard Luis Flores on Thursday night in a trade with the Houston Rockets. In exchange for Flores, the 55th selection in the draft, and cash considerations, the Rockets received Greek guard Vassilis Spanoulis, the 50th pick. "He just turned 22," Rockets general manager Carroll Dawson told the Associated Press regarding Spanoulis. "He led his team to the Young Man's A-1 Euro Championship. We've liked him all along."

Views

A lot of teams reportedly liked Spanoulis, but he's not available to come over to the States for at least another year before his contract can be bought out. The Rockets obviously feel like they can wait, while the Mavericks needed a guard who can potentially help the team next season. Basketball fans may remember Flores from last year's NCAA tournament, when he led Manhattan to a first-round victory over Florida and a near-defeat of Wake Forest.
