Legitimate reasons why Avery may have benched Kidd
Alright folks, let's hear some reasons why Avery decided to park Kidd on the bench at the end of the game. I'll start:
Avery still hadn't recovered from pre-partying before the game with Roy Tarpley.

Avery noticed Jason Kidd's shoes were untied and didn't want Kidd to hurt himself out there.

Keep his cards close to his vest during a regular season game?
EDIT: Am I the only one trying here?

That's the ONLY thing I can think of, but it's not like Kidd would do the same thing over and over. And the West is too tough this year to blow off a game where you could've moved up big in the seedings.

Trying to confuse Spurs in to calling all their timeouts, plus one, thus incurring a technical foul, and a chance to set up a game-winning two-pointer.

He told Jason Kidd to take a 360 turn as he was walking out to the court. Kidd got confused, turned around, and went to the bench.

Possible reasons for Avery's decision:
a) Avery doesn't think Kidd is a proficient enough shooter to keep in at the end of the game.
b) Avery doesn't think that Kidd is a proficient enough playmaker (??!!) and/or defender to keep in at the end of the game.
c) Avery wants to show Kidd and/or management and/or the locker room who's the boss.
Chicken-crap reasons that Avery might hide behind:
a) Kidd hasn't learned any of the Mavs' closing plays.
b) Kidd was tired with SARs or the Avian Bird Flu disease.
c) Ummmmm... I'm having trouble thinking of any other other credible excuses that Avery might offer, but I'm sure he might surprise me during the post-game press conference or on the radio tomorrow...

He shouted "JASON GET YOUR BUTT ON THIS BENCH," and Kidd went instead of Terry.

Kidd couldn't have joined the game right then because his long penis wasn't properly tied around his waist yet. If he stood up, he would have been arrested for public nudity.

Does because he likes comedy count as a reason? Or maybe he was trying to win America's Funniest Home Videos?
Never has the ending of a game better encapsulated everything there is about this team that drives us nuts.
Your Dallas Mavericks, the NBA's laughingstock. We're the comic relief.
*sigh*

Trying to keep Pop guessing. You know between those two it's a game of cat and dead cat.

Well, the answer, according to Avery, was that he wanted to spread the floor with all of the shooters (which doesn't include Kidd). Didn't say anything about not trusting him yet.

Avery, JET and Stack are all part of a Satanic cult. If he doesn't play his blood brothers at the end of the game he will be the sacrifice at the next social event.

He just wanted to spend quality man-to-man time on the bench getting to know Jason Kidd, the person.

There's no point having Dampier in the game, if you're looking to spread the floor.. He is as bad as Raef LaFrentz at swatting the ball instead of grabbing an o-board.
Get the ball into Kidd's hands for a drive and kick. Kidd gets a foul call against Bowen on that play. Jason Terry never will.

He had a sudden urge to discuss with Jason if Obama was going to be able to win in Texas on Tuesday.

He saw that Devin had an excellent game and decided to let it be known we made the worst trade in club history by taking Kidd out of the game...
Gah I hate Avery.

Along these lines....
After Game 2 against Miami, David Stern figured he couldn't have any of this Dallas winning the trophy stuff. Stern sent Stu Jackson and a few goons out to capture Avery and replace him with Robo-Avery. Robo-Avery was a cyborg programmed by Stern to destroy the Mavs at all cost so Cuban could never win a championship. Robo-Avery doesn't always throw games because Stern can't make it too obvious, but at the most inopportune times Robo-Avery will do something that slowly leads to a Mavericks meltdown. Meanwhile, the real Avery is bound-and-gagged somewhere in a closet at the NBA headquarters yelling in a thick Cajun accent for someone to let him out.
