OMG, Duke out
West Virginia used Joe Alexander’s 22 points and 11 rebounds and all sorts of contributions from unlikely sources for a 73-67 victory over Duke on Saturday, getting to the NCAA tournament’s round of 16 in Huggins’ first season.
Every year from 1997 through 2006, Duke was a participant in the round of 16. Every single year. It’s a stretch that featured three trips to the Final Four and the 2001 national championship. But now Krzyzewski’s team is on a two-year drought, having bowed out in the first round in 2007.

And just like it is every other year, it was one of the highlights of my year. Coach K's program is starting to lose a little bit of it's luster over there in Durham.

the difference with duke the past two years is they haven't had ANY semblance of an inside game offensively. plain and simple.
I think they were hoping for McRoberts to fill the shoes of Shelden Williams, but McRoberts bolted for the pros early.
live by the three, die by the three.
Haven't seen their recruiting class for next year, but they desperately need a big man. Zoubek doesn't count - that dude is goofy as hell - decent on the boards and defensively, but NOTHING on offense.

Honestly, I have to question the job Coach K has done lately. He doesn't seem to be doing much to develop his talent, when every year his roster is filled with 6-8 McD's All-Americans. His biggest problem in my eyes is that he just doesn't utilize his bench. He seems to make a decision on who his best 7 players are, and he rides his starting 5 hard giving decent minutes to a 6th guy, and a handful of minutes to a 7th guy. The rest of the team just doesn't see the court.
So when the tourney rolls around, he is left with a team whose top players are fatigued, and the rest of the roster is raw. Then his team gets predictably knocked out early. I thought he was making an adjustment early in the season as he was making good use of his bench. But when the back half of the ACC schedule rolled around, he was back to riding his starters.

I would definitely agree. This year, though, most of his bench is freshmen and sophomores. So i can see not wanting to rely on them heavily down the stretch. It's obvious his players are fatigued, i definitely agree.
At the beginning of the year, King and Smith were getting pretty good minutes in the rotation. But toward the end, King was relegated to the bench, brought in at the end of halves just for his shooting. And Smith only played spot minutes to back up Paulus.
McClure and Pocius got decent minutes last year, then almost none this year.
And of all those 6'6'-6'8" all-americans, there's not one player on that team that could reliably get a basket down low. Lance Thomas is their only real inside guy, and he misses so many shots it's ridiculous.
