IRVING, Texas -- A Dallas Cowboys scouting assistant sustained permanent paralysis from the waist down after he was injured when the team's tent-like practice structure collapsed in a severe storms.
The team announced that Rich Behm was in stable condition at Parkland Hospital on Sunday after surgery to stabilize a fracture that severed the spinal cord.
The 33-year-old Behm was among a dozen people hurt in the accident Saturday, and was one of three Cowboys staffers who remained hospitalized.

Buehler thinks he actually suffered the worst injuries among the players, although he wasn't severely hurt. He needed three stitches to close a gash on his right knee. He also has a concussion, sore neck, skin ripped off his ear and a cut on his forehead. Yet he feels very fortunate, a feeling he said was shared by his teammates.

Folk Sidelined
Kicker Has Hip Surgery

IRVING, Texas - The Cowboys drafted rookie David Beuhler in the fifth round knowing an extra kicker is more a roster luxury than a necessity.

Now it looks like a wise insurance policy with Nick Folk sidelined at least eight weeks following hip surgery.

Folk, a steady two-year veteran, had a right hip labral tear repaired Tuesday and is expected to resume light kicking work in eight weeks, with full kicking duties targeted in 12 weeks. Dr. Marc Phillipon performed the surgery in Denver, Colorado.

Folk's injury is unrelated to Saturday's collapse of the Cowboys' indoor practice facility. He was not present at the team's three-day mini-camp for rookies and select first-year players.

Folk apparently had been nagged by the injury for some time and ultimately decided surgery was the best recourse. The Cowboys are scheduled to open training camp in San Antonio at the end of July, which roughly matches Folk's 12-week timetable for a full recovery.

Until then, Beuhler likely will assume the bulk of the kicking duties. The Cowboys drafted the athletic 227-pounder as a kickoff specialist and potential special teams player, but he also finished 22-of-27 on field goal attempts at USC, including 20-of-22 from inside 40 yards.

Folk, a Pro Bowl selection in 2007, has made 86.8 percent of his career field goal attempts. The Cowboys' long-term vision is teaming Folk's accuracy with Beuhler's powerful leg; the rookie had a 67.9-yard average and 48 touchbacks out of 88 kickoffs at USC.

But Beuhler hasn't lost sight of becoming a well-rounded kicker, even if a healthy Folk will push him into a specialist position.

"I think I know what my role is going to be on this team," Beuhler said at the mini-camp. "But even though I'll be kicking off, I still don't want to lose my touch as a (field goal) kicker.

"You have to stay ready, because you never know when you'll be needed."



Williams A Bengal

IRVING, Texas - Former Cowboys safety Roy Williams will have the chance to turn his career around next season after agreeing to a short-term deal with the Cincinnati Bengals on Wednesday.

Williams is reunited with one-time Cowboys defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer, who schooled the five-time Pro Bowler during his first five years in the league. Williams has said for a while he was better-suited to play close to the line of scrimmage in a 4-3 defense. The Cowboys switched to the 3-4 under Bill Parcells in 2005, and Williams' once high level of play deteriorated ever since.

"There were a couple of teams offering considerable more money, but Roy liked the fit in Cincinnati," Williams' agent Jordan Woy told Bengals.com. "It's a good fit for both sides really. Roy obviously has a great relationship with (defensive coordinator) Mike Zimmer and he's excelled in that defense and the Bengals are happy to get a guy like that for their defense."

Under Zimmer from 2002-06, Williams posted 487 tackles, including 6.5 sacks, with 17 interceptions. He was the Cowboys' first-round pick in 2002 (No. 8 overall), and enjoyed immediate success at the professional level. Playing alongside longtime Cowboys safety Darren Woodson in his first two seasons, Williams became the face of the franchise. He had a career-high 127 tackles in 2002, and five interceptions, tied with Ed Reed for the most among rookies that season. The next year Williams earned his first trip to the Pro Bowl, his fierce hits intimidating opposing receivers and helping the Cowboys become the league's top-rated defensive unit.

Williams continued to play well in 2004 and 2005, but chinks in the armor slowly began to show without Woodson by his side, the Cowboys' all-time leading tackler hampered by a back injury that would force him to retire after the 2004 season. Teams began finding ways to isolate Williams in coverage, where he struggled.

Before the 2006 season the Cowboys gave Williams a four-year contract extension through 2010, a deal that included the largest signing bonus for a safety in NFL history. He had a good year statistically, with five interceptions, but the coverage issues persisted, and things got dramatically worse from there. Williams was exposed in coverage more and more, and in 2007 his habitual horse-collar tackling resulted in a one-game suspension, the first game he missed in his career. Still, Williams was named to his fifth consecutive Pro Bowl.

After changing jersey numbers and slimming down for the 2008 season, Williams' attempt at a resurrection was cut short when two broken forearm injuries limited him to just three games. Amid talk that he would be cut or traded this off-season, Williams requested his release and was let go on March 5, the same day the Cowboys released Terrell Owens.

Williams' hope was that being released in March would give him a better opportunity to find a fit on another team rather than if he were simply waived out of training camp. But he only took one visit in free agency, to Cincinnati, and his agreement with the Bengals is thought to be an incentive-laden one or two-year deal.

"It's a short-term deal with incentives so both sides can get their feet wet with the situation and we'll go from there," Roy told the website.

In seven seasons with the Cowboys Williams posted 19 regular season interceptions, and one postseason pick. He hadn't registered a sack since 2005.

Signing with the Bengals also reunited Williams with Tank Johnson, the free agent defensive tackle the Cowboys didn't attempt to re-sign after two seasons with the club.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - The new $1.1 billion Dallas Cowboys stadium doesn't have an announced sponsor yet — but now it has a name.

Team owner Jerry Jones announced Wednesday that the venue in Arlington will be called Cowboys Stadium.

Country star George Strait will headline the opening event at Cowboys Stadium. The June 6 concert will also feature Reba McEntire, Blake Shelton and Julianne Hough from "Dancing With the Stars."

The Cowboys on Aug. 21 will host Tennessee in their first preseason game at the new venue, which replaces Texas Stadium in Irving.

Cowboys Sign DT Seawright For Backup Help

IRVING, Texas - The one position that probably has the least depth on the Cowboys roster would be defensive tackle.

The club made an effort to change that on Monday, signing Jonas Seawright, although like the other backups to Pro Bowler Jay Ratliff, he hasn't played much football lately.

Seawright last played for the New York Giants in 2006, appearing in nine games, but after training camp in 2007, he was cut just before the start of the season.

Seawright joined the Giants in 2005 as an undrafted free agent from North Carolina and spent his rookie season on the practice squad. He should have the ideal size for a nose tackle, spending his playing days in the 335-pound range.

He will join backups Junior Siavii and Tim Anderson at the nose tackle position. Siavii has not played since 2005, when he spent two years with the Chiefs. Although he did attend training camp with the Cowboys last season, he has not played in a game in three full seasons.

Anderson was also out of the league in 2008 after getting cut in training camp by the Falcons. He spent one season in Atlanta after three years in Buffalo.

The Cowboys decided not to re-sign Tank Johnson in the off-season. The unrestricted free agent joined the Bengals, opening up a roster spot behind Ratliff, who made his first Pro Bowl last season, recording a career-high 7 ½ sacks along with a team-leading 31 quarterback pressures.

The Cowboys are hoping Seawright can participate in this week's OTA (Organized Team Activity) practices that begin Tuesday at Standridge Stadium in nearby Carrollton. The Cowboys will conduct four weeks of OTA sessions with three practices per week.

The Cowboys also have one mandatory mini-camp, scheduled June 15-17.

All off-season practices will be held at Standridge Stadium due to the collapse of the practice facility back on May 2. The Cowboys will be replacing all three practice fields in an attempt to be ready for practices in August when the team returns from training camp in San Antonio.

Cowboys Free Agent Davis Signs With Oakland

With minicamps and OTAs underway across the league, and training camps about two months away, former Cowboys safety and special teams captain Keith Davis has finally landed with an NFL team.

Davis on Thursday signed a contract with the Oakland Raiders, giving the five-year veteran who turns 31 in December a chance to squeeze in a sixth season. This will be the third team Davis has been with in the past year, having signed a free-agent deal last off-season with Miami only to get released toward the end of training camp.

The Cowboys, struggling badly on special teams during the preseason and suffering several nagging injuries to special teams contributors, didn’t take long to scoop up the guy who spent his first four NFL seasons in Dallas. Davis was immediately elected special teams captain.

Not only did Davis lead the Cowboys with 20 special teams tackles, but because of injuries to Roy Williams and Pat Watkins ended up starting eight of the 16 games he played in 2008. Davis, though, battled through injuries most of the season and the Cowboys made an off-season decision to get younger as a team.

So they ended up signing unrestricted free agent Gerald Sensabaugh as a potential starter and then drafted a bevy of safeties, including DeAngelo Smith and Michael Hamlin. They also are toying with the idea of Courtney Brown and Alan Ball, both corners by trade, becoming swing guys, playing safety, too.

And unfortunately for Davis, who wanted to return to the Cowboys, was basically told he would only be re-signed if they needed to fill a spot after the draft and possibly not until just before training camp. Davis could not wait for that opportunity, if indeed there really was one, once the Raiders came calling.

The Cowboys have decided to end their relationship with outside linebacker Greg Ellis.

Ellis and owner and general manager Jerry Jones met Tuesday morning. While a definitive time frame has not been set, Jones said Ellis will play elsewhere in 2009.

Ellis was told to stay home from organized team activities last Thursday as the club considered its options.

If Ellis is cut, the move frees up $4.15 million against this year’s salary cap, however, the team remains on the hook for a $1.5 million guarantee that was put in Ellis’ contract in 2007. If Ellis signs with another team, the Cowboys would have to make up the difference if he does not earn $1.5 million from his new employer.

Ellis had 77 sacks in 11 seasons with the Cowboys, but he will forever be linked with Randy Moss after the Cowboys chose to pass on the receiver in the first round of the 1998 draft.

Ellis’ best season came in 2007, when he made the Pro Bowl after posting a career-best 12.5 sacks despite missing the first three games recovering from a torn Achilles’ tendon.

A defensive end by trade, Ellis moved to outside linebacker in 2006 with some trepidation. He was upset with a contract he signed during the 2003 season, and he believed the Cowboys were looking to replace him, first with the selection of Bobby Carpenter in 2006 and Anthony Spencer in 2007. Spencer will replace Ellis as the starter opposite DeMarcus Ware.

Despite his complaints, Ellis remained a popular figure in the locker room and was the team’s representative to the NFL Players Association. In 162 regular-season games, he was credited with 634 tackles, 77 sacks, 36 tackles for loss, 197 pressures, 51 pass breakups and 21 forced fumbles.

He led the Cowboys in sacks six times in his career, which is the second most in club history to Harvey Martin (seven).
