Martin, Maggette ejected for fighting

January 6, 2004

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) -- Kenyon Martin of the Nets and Corey Maggette of the Clippers exchanged punches and were ejected in the third quarter of the Los Angeles-New Jersey game on Tuesday night.

Martin grabbed Maggette by the hands as he drove under the basket with 7:08 left with the Nets ahead 60-34. As the whistle was blown for a foul, Maggette shoved Martin to the floor under the Los Angeles basket.

Martin jumped up and grabbed Maggette under the neck. Maggette threw a right at Martin, who retaliated with a left-handed punch.

Each player threw one more punch before being separated.

After a short meeting among the officials, both players were ejected.

Under NBA rules, throwing a punch brings an automatic suspension of at least one game.

Actually I think Maggette instigated the fight by shoving Martin to the floor after the foul. The foul wasn't flagrant at all... I guess Maggette thought that a hard foul was uncalled for since the Clippers were down big.
So, in short, BOTH are punks.

says the Dallas pundits...:-)

Maggette doesn't have a history of this stuff, which doesn't mean he couldn't start it, but it's likely that he wouldn't.

Players get pushed all the time, and I don't for one second believe Maggette shoved Martin hard enough to require that type of response. KMart is just so hellbent on being portrayed as a badass...

What i saw was Kenyon Martin losing his balance as Maggette SLIGHTLY pushed him back a little which caused him to fall. Martin was embarassed that he fell so he took a swing at Maggette.

I don't know, Nash13. The shove by Maggette, though not forceful, seemed pretty obvious and deliberate to me.

I like kenyon and his hot head...it might not have been the correct thing to do in swinging but i appreciate his demanding of respect in the nba. Its something a lot of the mavs could learn

i saw it as this

hard foul by martin (i agree, why the hard foul when you're up big and making fools of the other team?).
maggette, frustrated, shoves martin to the ground. it was kind of in the same motion of him being fouled.
martin gets up and shoves/grabs maggette around the neck
maggette starts to go toward martin
martin clocks maggette on the side of the head, as maggette swings at martin, not getting much contact, if at all.

both at fault, but i think the true instigation was when martin grabbed maggette around the neck.

Both of these guys are punks that are looking for trouble.

Magette got one of his teeth chipped from a Malone elbow because of his big mouth earlier in the season... one of the few Malone elbows that was probably justified.

Both just got 2 games each from the league.

NEW YORK (AP) -- Kenyon Martin and Corey Maggette were suspended for two games without pay by the NBA on Wednesday, a day after they were ejected from a Clippers-Nets game for fighting.

The players threw punches in the third quarter of the Nets' 92-75 win Tuesday night, after New Jersey's Martin committed a hard foul on Maggette on a drive.

Maggette appeared to shove Martin to the court, and Martin got up and went after Maggette. Each player threw two punches.

Maggette will serve his suspension during the Clippers' games at Philadelphia on Wednesday and at Toronto on Friday.

Martin will miss games at Philadelphia on Friday and against Washington on Jan. 14.

Just saw the replay go a couple of times, and it looked to me like it was all Martin starting the dance. I couldn't tell that Maggette instigated ANYTHING.

I hate that cheap-a$$ed K-Mart punk. He's got some good game, but he is a stupid, barely-literate, idiot thug. I can hardly wait to see some other bigger thug take him out. Where is Artest when you need him?

Sure hope the Mavericks never have to make a decision about whether to trade for or sign him. His ability his attractive, but his stupidity his distractive.

Plus the fact that he's asking for a max-out contract when he's not max-out material is disturbing.

I seen it quite a few times and Maggette shouldn't have pushed him down. If it was a small push or he seen KMart falling he could've helped him or looked and said are u ok. Instead Maggette gave him this look like, don't touch me or something. Both are clearly at fault here IMO.

ReDirk, I seen that Lakers/Clippers game and you couldn't be more wrong. Malone took a cheap shot at Maggette with the elbow and chipped his teeth, Corey did not say anything to him until after that when he was on his way to the lockerrom with a bloody mouth and a chipped team. You obviously didn't watch that game, because as u put it that's not how it happened. Read the above, that's exactly how it happened.
