GDT: Phoenix at Dallas, December 17, 8:30 p.m. central
Phoenix is such an odd team. They have ten thousands wing players and no frontline. Mavs need to take advantage and get the ball inside for shots and crash the boards.
(Sorry I'm late today... hectic morning.)

Well better late than never. We only had to delete 4 GDT's by Mavs777.

There will be a strong temptation to fall into a defense-optional game with the Phoenix Suns. The Suns lead the league in scoring (109 points/game) and they allow the most points in the league on average (110 points/game). The Mavericks will need to be sure not to fall into that trap against the Suns. "It’s very important that we come out defensively and impose our will on them," said Jason Terry. "They’re a high-scoring team, but I don’t think there’s any team in the league, if we come out and play the defense that we’re capable of, that can have success. So, our goal is the same: defensive success."
With the news that Brendan Haywood is still "their guy," it might be a tough game for him to really make an impression. This game does work in favor of Tyson Chandler, on both sides of the floor. "I like these types of games," Chandler said. "It should be fun for us. It will be fun on both ends. It will be a good way for us to work our defense against a great pick-and-roll team, a high-energy team. And it will be good for our offensive players to get going."

I read the first line of Suns Mavs preview from Paul Coro and couldn't stop laughing:
* Since the man they drafted to eventually guard people like Dirk Nowitizki has yet to crack the rotation (Earl Clark), the Suns have a heck of matchup problem with the Mavericks. The Suns start Lopez and Frye now and probably can't ask either one to guard small forward Caron Butler. So as much as the Suns would like Hill to be on Nowitzki or Kidd, they are not as flexible in the frontcourt and might ask Frye to take Nowitzki.

Just finished an interesting look on appreciating Dirk and other NBA superstars for the shows they put up: http://4ptsplay.blogspot.com/2010/12...-to-watch.html

Remember the good old days when we were concerned about matching up with the Suns (with a healthy Amare, anyway)?
Good times.

Suns got front line players where they can exploit mismatches, but Gentry is more of a meat and potatoes guy, PG, SG, SF, PF, C. With Hedo, you can exploit a mismatch at the 4 on the offensive end by drawing the opposing 4 out. spread the floor, create more driving and passing lanes. I think DAntoni can do wonders with this bunch too.

All 4 of my high school years there were intense Mavs/Suns match ups and I loved dealing with dumb suns fans at school.
I'll never forget the double OT game vs the Suns in March 07. Wow.

Unfortunately, I attended that game. How painful.

My favorite Mavs/Suns game was in the 05-06 year (I believe). It was the very first gme of he year. And they had to go into overtime, and Dirk was hitting some crazy 3s to get themin the game. It was just beautiful.

Pregame notes, Carlisle, paraphrasing: temptation to get up and down is tough but you have you to score at a great rate against PHX

I hope we're about to see a bounce back defensive performance from the Mavs, but if the Suns are still hitting their jumpers it will be intersting to see, if the Mavs can still "score with the best of 'em".
Go Mavs!

TXA is about three seconds ahead of ESPN. Glad I don't have to listen to Hubie.
