yeah, you're right but we're up by double-digits, i think carlisle wanted to give haywood some confidence for the next games...

I could be blindfolded with both arms tied behind my back and my legs amputated and I'd still shoot free throws better than Haywood. So pathetic.

Maybe Phoenix didn't realize that we subbed out Haywood.

The nice thing about Haywood's terrible free throw shooting is that it might force Carlisle to give Ian the minutes he deserves.

We've heard many times that Haywood's not the type of guy who needs the occasional punishment to get better. He's the type of guy who needs a hug as a vote of confidence instead. Leaving him on the court after two missed free throws is a symbolic hug by Carlisle to show Haywood that he trusts him. No reason to immediately take him out after missing two free throws and hurting his confidence from the line even more in the process when you're up by 15 points or something.
Eventually, Carlisle did the right thing by taking him out. But he also did the right thing by not immediately punishing him after his first attempts. Coach is not as dumb as you think he is. Or you're not as smart as you think you are.

the suns are apparently stupid since they hacked ian, a guy who has made 17-20 free throws this year. they must have just assumed since he was a french project center he must suck at free throws without looking at the scouting report.

The real bummer for Wood is that he had some good minutes earlier in the game. If this happens again Carlisle's going to have to consider taking Haywood out preemptively whenever the Mavs get to four fouls drawn in the quarter.
BTW, am I the only one whose browser is getting thrown off by that video that mavspwnage has linked? Scrolling by his posts is like trying to drag a dead elephant through the mud.

Or you're about as smart as Gentry pulling hack-a-Ian.
Like you said, Haywood is a mentally fragile player that needs to be protected, not exposed. By allowing Haywood to go 1-6 from the FT line, with no one to save him the ridicule, all that did was shatter his confidence, not help it. I assure you that Haywood would have preferred to be pulled after his first two misses in order to save him from the embarrassment he endured, and will continue to be subject to. His look on the bench said it all.

Then again, one could argue that the only way to improve his situation and confidence is by giving him the chance to actually make free throws in the game. If he had made both of his last two instead of missing one, it certainly would have helped his confidence as he would have been able for once to survive the hack-a-Wood attempts. I don't believe that a "two misses and you're out approach" is the way to go, especially not when we're up by 15 late in the game.

but at least he made the last of the 4 attempts. in haywoods last 1 free throw attempts he's shooting 100%! that's something he can hang his hat on

I see it as a no win situation unless he hits em at a 70% clip, Haywood is going to be down on himself either way, you could tell after the first trip he was really frustrated and didn't want to shoot the fts

Absolutely...you have to give him a chance to get out of this funk...As many have said he's a career 60+ percent shooter. Yanking him out at the first miss is not going to do anything to fix the problem. You can argue that the milwaukee game he might should have pulled him out earlier and when I was knee-jerking going home I yakked about it as well.
But he's a member of the team and this needs to get fixed, he can't fix it without getting some attempts.

Heck they'll start fouling him as soon as we get to 3 fouls in the quarter at this rate.. He's got to fix that or he'll not see any important action.

You cannot save haywood from his own bad performance...unless you never play him. He's exposing himself to it because he's not making free throws...no ones fault but his own. Carlisle can only give him opportunities to fix it and that cannot be done on the practice court.

It's better that teams do it now so the Mavs (and Haywood) have about 50 games to work on it. You know it might cost the Mavs a game in the regular season but I'd rather them try to give Haywood the confidence. If he ever makes a few in a row it might just be the spark he needs.

Agreed Bayliss...it actually is fortunate that folks have gotten on board now rather than later...He is tragically the most inept ft shooter this year in history.
What is weird is that he doesn't have all those hitches that most horrible free throw shooters have, it's a pretty decent looking shot...but just clanks around the rim...
