PHILADELPHIA -- Aaron McKie, the NBA's sixth man of the year, and the Philadelphia 76ers have agreed to a seven-year deal worth up to $42 million, an NBA source said Saturday.

Teams were permitted to begin negotiating with free agents July 1, but cannot have them sign contracts until Wednesday.

The source, speaking on condition of anonymity, told The Associated Press that McKie turned down at least two other offers to remain with Sixers. McKie's base salary totals $38 million with incentives that could bring it to $42 million.

McKie's deal includes an option for him to become a free agent after five years. Neither McKie nor his agent, Leon Rose, could be reached for comment. The Sixers didn't immediately confirm the deal.

McKie, a Philadelphia native who went to Temple, averaged career highs in points (11.6), rebounds (4.1), assists (five), steals (1.39) and minutes (31.5). He started 33 of the 76 games he played mainly because of injuries to point guard Eric Snow.

The 6-5 McKie averaged 14.6 points in the playoffs, helping the Sixers reach the NBA Finals for the first time in 18 years.

On Jan. 2, he was selected the league's Player of the Week after averaging 22.3 points, 8.7 assists, and six rebounds, and registering his first triple-double.

He recorded back-to-back triple-doubles against Sacramento on Dec. 30 (19 points, 10 rebounds and 14 assists) and Atlanta on Jan. 3 (11 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists).

McKie, selected 17th by Portland in the first-round of the 1994 draft, was acquired by the Sixers with Theo Ratliff from the Detroit Pistons on Dec. 18, 1997, in a deal for Jerry Stackhouse and Eric Montross.

Earlier in the week, the Sixers and All-Star center Dikembe Mutombo agreed to five-year deal believed to be worth more than $13 million per season.

The Sixers still are hoping to re-sign backup center Todd MacCulloch, a restricted free agent who visited the New Jersey Nets this week.

I would of liked to seen him here as well, above Hardaway and Richmond, etc...Looks like everyone is staying at home this year...Strange that Finley is the only major free agent left that hasn't committed to his team, isn't it?

Im starting to wonder what players Cuban and Nelson are expecting to fall through the cracks and land on our door step?
