Dirk vs Team USA: Wednesday on ESPN at 1:00 CST
This is simply a public service announcement...
I'm currently watching the Italy v. USA match right now (Team USA is down 56-50 in the third quarter), and I just figured there have to be a few BBall starved Mavs faithful who might want to be informed or reminded that Dirk and the German national team will be trying to go Berzerk on Larry Brown & co. on national television tomorrow afternoon.

How embarassing.
I knew the USA was doomed after their roster was set. They dont have any shooters, defenders, passers. They could have used shooters like Pierce, Allen, Finley. A defender like Artest. Passers like Kidd, Bibby. |

I'll be fully behind the US team when the Olympics start. However, since tomorrow ain't the Olympics I'll be rooting for Dirk to tear 'em a new one.

I think the US needs to switch to some kind of "semi permanent" team, like other top national teams. You can have personal movements on these teams but you also need a core that plays together for more then just a few weeks.
Obviously the talent gap in world basketball is much smaller now then it was 10 years ago and given the rosters that US sends these days there might not even be a talent gap at all in some cases. Anyways individual talent obviously is just one part of the game (see Detroit or Dallas last season). And while the original dream team could overcome the lack of being a jelled team by sheer individual talent I think future US teams won´t be able to do so. The US will need to go to "semi parmanent" teams with well built rosters (and their current roster isn´t really overwhelming) in the future or they will see more and more tourneys where someone else walks away with the medals. That doesn´t mean that they can´t win in Athen but they are definitly not the clear cut favorite. |

Losing these exibition games and in the olympics may be the best thing that ever happens to basketball in this country. Maybe it will cause some of our better talent to wake up and smell the coffee and get to the gym and work on their damned fundamentals. We have superstar players who can't dribble, can't shoot, can't play D, can't block out, you name it. Our young people need to see how arrogant they are and understand that the Europeans, South Americans and Asians are working hard to improve and they have talent to boot. How many high schoolers think they are going to be NBA stars? At the school I taught at even the B-team players think they are going to play in the NBA. Unfortunately, none of these kids are willing to put the time and effort into being good. They think they are entitled, just like the NBA guys think they are entitled to the gold medal.

I'm looking for Germany to get smashed tomorrow. The US will be pissed and if Adamola Okalija(sp) is their 2nd best player, they're not a very good team.
My hope: Dirk shoots about 30 times and doesn't get hurt.

My predictions for game and season:
Dirk, wanting to make a point, scores 50 on Team USA dunking repeatedly (and magestically) over Timmy D. Angered by the departure of Nash and taking it as a personal challenge, Dirk assumes all shots taken last year by the Antoines and averages 29 and 10.5 leading the Mavs to the Championship in the process. He refuses to cut his hair the entire season as a tribute to Steve and stops bathing during the play offs. He is named MVP of the league but again fails to make the top two NBA teams coming in behind Timmy D and Kevin G. at PF. P.S. - Again angry (its a theme) at being repeatedly lambasted for his D, Dirk flips the switch and makes all NBA first team D beating out Benny Wallace by a huge margin at PF. |

The classic Femerling/Dirk/Okulaja frontline is looking pretty darned strong so far.
Ouch... Dirk just busted Odom with a jumpshot in his face, and Germany is leading 19-17...

Germany is missing its top 2 guards. As a team they haven't played great yet are still winning. How bad is this American team anyway? Walton and his partner claim that the American team is playing much better than they did. That is just scary because the German team wasn't even good enough to qualify for the olympics. Wait till they have to play the better teams.

Unfortunately only got to see the first quarter and a half. I like what I see from Dirk, he's aggressive. In fact, that was the first time I ever saw him on the German National Squad. Keep us updated! (us as in us at work who don't have access to ESPN ATM.

Team USA is up 44-40 at the half. It looks like Larry Brown made some good adjustments to contain Dirk after the big German torched them with his 5-5 shooting. After team USA started rotating fast to double him, he missed three straight jumpers to sully his earlier perfect shooting, and he now has 13 points in the game (unless I missed him scoring again while I was on the phone a minute ago- I'll have to check Tivo for that)...

Dirk has 15 pts, 5 rbs, and 3 assts, on 7-11 shooting. Duncan on the other hand, has 11pts, and 2 rbs, on 5-7 shooting (Our backcourt has done a pretty pee-poor job of going to the man in the post).

Dirk just hit a layup in transition to convert the German's 6th straight bucket and tie the game at 51 pts...
Now the Germans are up 53-51 and the Cologne crowd is going crazy.
