And now we've signed the undisputed most hated player in the league....Sean Avery. For entirely too much money.y
So now we have Ott, Morrow, and Avery. Teams are going to hate us so badly. Get ready to watch that $4 million a year sit in the box plenty, while Hossa and his Wing buddies are scoring power play goals on us.
What do we do now?
Morrow - Ribeiro - Lehtinen?
Modano??? - Richards - Eriksson
Avery - Petersen - Ott <---- lol if that happens. You don't want to mess with them.
Lundqvist - ? We need another center? - Brunnstrom....crombeen....Conner?
Can conner play center? What happened to "We have a S load of centers?"
This is why I want Modano to stay at center on the third line. But Hullie is hell bent on playing Modano like he's 27 and gonna score a bunch of goals. If I were Hull, I would go in the completely opposite direction as this, to tell you the truth.

Four years, $15.5? For Sean Freaking Avery. This is going to take some getting used to.
PS: "No movement clause"? I thought we were done doing those. It's not so much the fact that we're getting Avery I don't like...I'm just not a fan of this deal.

I was thinking:
Morrow-Ribeiro-Lehtinen
Modano-Richards-Eriksson
Avery-Ott-Petersen
Brunnstrom-Lundqvist-(anyone who proves worthy)
You would have a beastly checking line, a more potent second line, and a pretty solid fourth.
OR
Morrow-Ribeiro-Lehtinen
Avery-Richards-Eriksson
Ott-Modano-Petersen
Brunnstrom-Lundqvist-(anyone who proves worthy)
Avery could be to Richards what Morrow is to Ribeiro, and provide the backbone for the second line. You would keep the scoring punch with your third line. Fourth still solid.
----
Dallas is gonna be one of the most hated teams in the league. But, what else is new with Dallas teams?

I like the second option better, but like I said, I think Hullie is hell bent on reliving his glory days through Modano, and wants to see him with Richards even though it didn't work when they tried it last March.
Avery would certainly open up some space for Richards, if he can stay out of the penalty box.
Also, avery played 57 games last year, 29 the year before that, and 55 the year before that. What in the hell makes him worth 4 mil a season if he can't even stay on the ice?
I will try to put some YouTube links together of Avery later tonight...

When Avery was in their lineup, the Rangers were a much more difficult team to face. In 86 regular-season games, he had 53 points and was a plus-17. He also had 12 points in 18 postseason games spanning two seasons.

12 points in 18 playoff games is nice. If he can do that, then he can stay. He just has to stay healthy, which I'm not convinced he can do.

Well it looks like Pacman won't have to look too far for someone to hang out with at strip clubs. I'm sure Sean Avery will gladly join him.

FRISCO, Tex. - The Dallas Stars announced today that the club has plans to enlarge their home penalty box due to the free agent signing of left wing Sean Avery to a four-year contract.
"We are thinking of pushing the rear wall back to the 3rd or 4th row," said Stars Co-General Manager Brett Hull. "His ability to negatively impact his teammates and the game is incredible. He will need internet access, a martini bar, and whore benches in the new box to keep him busy during his extended stays in there."
In 86 games with New York over the last two seasons, the Rangers penalty box was constantly cluttered with Avery's porno mags and fashion catalogs.
Avery, 28, collected 33 points (15 goals, 18 assists) in 57 games with the New York Rangers last season, and banged a lot of whores.

Why all the hate?
Avery appears to be a guy that gives Dallas a bit of an edge, a chip on the shoulder. I believe he will fit in well, providing Dallas with some nastiness to their game.
Sure, I hate seeing the Wings getting Hossa, but then again, they appear to be turning into the pretty boys of the NHL...it will be nice to watch them get punched in the face and fall short of their repeat dreams.
The Stars will win it all this year and the rest of the league will try to follow the Stars lead by becoming a grit league once again!!!

Spare McSpareson Scott Burnside at ESPN likes the deal:
Quote:
Stars sign forward Sean Avery to four-year, $15.5 million deal
Not sure exactly what New York Rangers GM Glen Sather was thinking. He made little effort to keep Sean Avery in the fold as the forward waltzed off Broadway and into Dallas. Now, the Stars have another talented, gritty forward to help take some of the pressure off captain Brenden Morrow.
"I just thought it was a no-brainer to have him in our lineup," Avery's former teammate in Detroit and current Stars assistant GM Brett Hull said Wednesday after the deal was done. "He goes against the stream, which I kind of like. Kind of reminds me of me."
There are always two trains of thought when it comes to Avery. There's Avery the player, who can antagonize with the best of them, but also knows how to play the game. The Rangers were a much different team -- read better -- with Avery in the lineup than without him. Then, there's Avery the diva, whose penchant for the dramatic has been off-putting to both teammates and opponents in the past.
The Stars believe Avery the player is the most important part of this equation. Dallas upset the defending Cup champs from Anaheim in the first round of the playoffs and then preseason Cup favorite San Jose before dropping a six-game series to the Red Wings in the West finals. Does Avery make the Stars better than Detroit? No. Not with the Wings adding Hossa. But Avery ensures the Stars will have more grit and no complacency in the dressing room after a season of unexpected playoff success.

This is going to be one of those "I'll believe it when I see it" things for me. Brenden has spoken so harshly of him in the past...if Morrow makes nice, maybe I will.

WOW
Rob Blake signed with the Sharks for 1 year, 5 million.
Diminishing, is one word that comes to mind. I wonder if that will be worth it. I don't know if the old boy is worth 5 mil, but I sure won't like seeing him in that sharks uni.
In other news, the Kings are going to be terrrrrrible next year.

I know, now that I'm in LA, I am so looking forward to watching them every night, I can't even tell you. J/k, at least I'm guaranteed 16 Stars games on TV now b/c I should also get Anaheim's broadcasts here...
PS: Mietts to the Wild...um, did they even watch him? 3 years, $7mil? For serious? I think maybe they only caught the one month he was on fire when he played w/Ribs & Morrow, cause that is ridiculous. That's like the kind of deal I wanted to offer Hags.

As I said at the un-boards....
Maybe mitten hands needs a change of scenery.
Or maybe, if the guy can't score with passes from freaking Ribeiro and Richards, he can't score anywhere!

Kings were going to be terrible, even with Blake. At this point, their future can only be better with all the high ranking draft picks they get.

Well if they don't get better in a hurry, I wonder how long Anze Kopitar will tolerate the situation. He needs a new deal next season, and he is due for a considerable raise, as he is a bad ass.

In 2 or 3 years, they are going to be studs. Thinking Kopitar can wait that long. Unless Dean Lombardi screws everything up.

Saturday would be great for the hard-working fans! I guess they don't want to stretch the camp out that long or something.
Yes, the plan is for the 16th. There was some talk about it being ready sooner, but I guess that was wishful thinking.
So are you working w/Brad now?

Sean Avery is as useful as one can get without scoring 50 goals or putting up 100 points.
Dallas hockey fans are going to be entertained next year.

DALLAS STARS SIGN HEAD COACH DAVE TIPPETT TO TWO-YEAR EXTENSION
FRISCO, Tex. – The Dallas Stars announced today that the club has signed Head Coach Dave Tippett to a two-year contract extension through the 2010-11 season. Tippett was signed to a one-year contract extension through the 2008-09 season in December.
Recently finishing his sixth year with the club, Tippett has a cumulative record of 235-127-48, the best record of any active coach in the NHL. He has guided the Stars to the playoffs in every season at the helm. He was named as the 19th head coach in Stars franchise history on May 21, 2002.
“Dave Tippett has done an exceptional job as head coach of this hockey club,” said Co-General Manager Les Jackson. “We are looking forward to getting back to work in preparation for the 2008-09 season.”
Tippett guided the Stars to a 10-8 record in the 2008 Stanley Cup Playoffs, advancing to the Western Conference Finals for the first time since 2000.
“Dave has proven to be a great leader on the Stars bench and we are pleased to have him under contract for the next three seasons,” added co-General Manager Brett Hull.
Tippett’s teams have been near the top of the NHL standings since he took over as head coach, boasting the third-best record in the league since ’02-03 and the second-best home record. Also, Tippett has guided Dallas to two 50-win campaigns during his tenure (23 of the 30 NHL teams have not registered even one 50-win season since 2002-03).
Under Tippett’s leadership, the Stars have finished in the top-10 in goal scoring three times (ranking tied for eighth in ’07-08, ninth in ’05-06 and tying for sixth in ’02-03). On the flip side, Dallas has finished no worse than sixth in goals-against all five seasons under Tippett, including ranking in the top-three on three occasions (’06-07, ’03-04 and ’02-03).
Prior to becoming a coach, the 46-year old native of Moosomin, Saskatchewan, played 11 years as a forward in the National Hockey League with the Hartford Whalers, the Washington Capitals, the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Philadelphia Flyers. In 721 career NHL outings, he registered 93 goals and 169 assists for 262 points with 317 penalty minutes.

Schedule's coming out tomorrow (unless Smiles can snag us a copy )
But Heika has good news...
Quote:
The Stars are hoping to release their preseason schedule today.
There's been a hangup with the last game against Edmonton as it was going head-to-head with a Cowboys game, so it needs to be moved.
The NHL is releasing highlights to the regular season schedule before the schedule is released tomorrow. Some interesting points include:
The season opener will be Oct. 10 at home against Columbus and coach Ken Hitchcock.
The three teams from the East that the Stars will play twice (remember, divisional rivals have been moved from eight meetings to six and each team will now play the other conference 18 times, thus three teams get two meetings) are: Florida, New Jersey and the NY Rangers. The Devils play the traditional New Year's Eve game in Dallas, while the Rangers will visit Feb. 6 and the Panthers will visit March 28.
Not released, but expected to be announced tomorrow is the fact that of the East teams visiting next season, both Pittsburgh (Sidney Crosby) and Washington (Alexander Ovechkin) will play in Dallas.

It's almost time to do this all again?
Spoooorts...

3 back to backs in October, 2 to start the first 4 games of the year.
But only 10 back to backs total by my count. That's not too bad, if they can fight through that first month. The scheduling is not kind in October.
But hey, at least we don't open @ COL for the 3rd year in a row.

I just bought my seats.
Apparently they're very busy this year. That's good news.
