Default Mike James signs with Minny

Updated: July 11, 2006, 5:03 PM ET
Ex-Raptor James agrees to deal with WolvesBy Marc Stein
ESPN.com

James

The Minnesota Timberwolves' willingness to make a four-year commitment to Mike James has landed them the best point guard still available on the free-agent market.

NBA front-office sources told ESPN.com that James on Tuesday agreed to sign a four-year contract with the Wolves worth an estimated $25 million. Wednesday is the first day free agents can officially sign contracts.

James had narrowed his choice down to Minnesota, Dallas and Houston -- where he maintains an offseason home -- and indicated over the weekend that the Mavericks had a slight edge, largely because of his relationship with Mavs coach Avery Johnson and their recent trip to the NBA Finals.

But the Mavericks and Rockets, according to sources, wouldn't commit to more than a three-year offer to the 31-year-old.

Minnesota's four-year pitch and the chance to team with Kevin Garnett won it for the Wolves, who have injected their backcourt with plenty of scoring potential by signing James and acquiring rookie Randy Foye on draft night.

Signing James alleviates Minnesota's need to start Foye as a rookie. James would likely team with Ricky Davis as the Wolves' starters in the backcourt, with defensive stopper Trenton Hassell at small forward and Foye coming off the bench.

If Foye can make an immediate impact and James can approach his production from last season's breakout performance in Toronto -- 20.3 points and 5.8 assists per game, as well as 44.2 percent shooting from 3-point range -- Garnett figures to be pleased.

The Wolves have resisted all trade interest in Garnett, vowing to take one more stab at building around their 30-year-old franchise player by finding scorers to play off him.

What a terrible decision, his big ego got the best of him. He took the most money and went to a team that has no shot at a title. What a loser.

ESPN - After a long courtship with a handful of teams, point guard Mike James has decided that Minnesota is the place for him, agreeing to sign a four-year contract worth an estimated $25 million. Other teams in the hunt for James were the Houston Rockets and the Dallas Mavericks .

James will now team with rookie Randy Foye and veteran Ricky Davis to form a formidable backcourt to help superstar Kevin Garnett.

funny. James is an idiot and an a-hole. I really wanted him here. I'm glad he is with Minny instead of Houston though. Have fun not making the playoffs, James. loser.

I was over this a week ago. When I found out Duffy was his agent I knew he wouldn't sign here. I will say i'm shocked we lost another player to Minnie that was a client of Duffy's.

Great news

Its also funny that he picked the team with the worst chance of even making the playoffs, just because they had a 4th year in their offer.

If no one gets hurt significally next season you are going to have Houston, Mavs, Nuggetts, Clippers, New Orleans, Suns, Spurs, LA, Kings and T-Wolves all fighting for a spot in the playoffs next season.. And I wouldn't even dismiss the Grizzlies or the Warriors just yet. The West is going to be crazy. There are going to be several good teams in the West who won't make the playoffs next season.

dtown add the jazz to your list. i made that point on another board. Looking at it the west is just so effing stacked its ridiculous. Think the nba would think about doing 12 west playoff teams and 4 east playoff teams? This does hurt my Hornets being better than the bulls bet but oh well.

Good for James, good for the Mavs.

Rarely will I begrudge a player getting the most out of a contract that he can. They have a limited number of years of high-earnings potential, and particularly a second- or third-tier player like James has to take it when it's offered.

Glad the Mavs didn't get screwed again trying to pursue the best bad/overrated/underperforming player available. Dampier was an understandable though regrettable situation, but James just wouldn't add enough to the team.

Would like to see them commit to developing Harris as the starter; look for a big guard with an outside shot who understands how to defend; and convince Terry of his value as a threat off the bench.

I would hope that since jet has his money now, he would be willing to come off the bench since it wont hurt his contract if that is what the mavs want

Edit-btw not saying he wouldnt have come off the bench anyway since he did when he first got here.

I completely agree, Kiki,....though I would not mind seeing how the DH/JT line handles a full season....

Why would you think of "dimissing" the grizzlies in the first place? They had the 4th best record in the west last year.
