Crazy to think that if he comes back next year, he could pass Jordan on the scoring list and Parish for rebounds.

What a privilege to get to follow him throughout his NBA career. I’m just really thankful for it all. Can’t even really put it to words, but for some reason, I don’t want to be sad and I’m not sad. It would have been sad if this journey with Dirk had ended early for whatever reason. It would have been sad if June 2011 never happened. I’m just simply grateful. And I hope he feels the same way. I hope he’s excited about his next chapter in life, and I hope he lives it with the same inspiring diligence, determination, and humility he displayed as a Maverick. God bless him.

There's so much to say. Fortunately others wrote very good pieces about how losing a sports figure that had been a part of your life is challenging. Just lots of weird emptiness right now.

2011 delivered one of my top 3 sports moments. Dirk might be gone, but that will stick forever. Thanks so much. I don't think I will enjoy a NBA championship the same way as I did back then.

I haven't said a lot about dirk's impending retirement... On one hand, I am extremely happy for him. I am overjoyed for the love that he has received from fans..from his contemporaries..from the media.. On the other hand, I am at a bit of a loss. It's an enormous hole that I now have. I have had two sports "loves' in my life. Dale Murphy and Dirk Nowitzki. Murphy retired in the 90's.. and now Dirk. I'm afraid that my life has changed so much and athletes have changed quite a bit as well..so much that I probably won't ever have another person/athlete that I truly care about in the same way. I just can't imagine caring about an outcome of a game as much as I did with these two sports giants. And to me, that is sad... I lived and died with every at bat and every game for the Braves for a decade. If any of you are familiar with the Braves of the 80's..well, they were just about as bad as the Mavs of the 90's.. So living and dying with every game... I did a lot more dying than living but it taught me to love the game regardless of the outcome. And that living and dying with each game..well, I can't say that it was the same with Dirk. I learned to pace myself a little bit better as I grew older. Obviously, every game wasn't a life or death thing. There was something called the playoffs (us 80's Braves fans didn't know anything about the playoffs). I just cannot imagine feeling like I did during the Mavs playoff runs.... I don't know.. I'm more or less at a loss right now. I feel as if I have a sports hole that won't ever be filled...

When I was younger I use to attend Dallas Maverick camps. I will never forget I saw two of the tallest guys I’ve ever witnessed in my life. One was Chris Anstey and the other was Dirk Nowitzki. Chris Anstey was the more vocal or the two....I don’t believe at the time Dirk even spoke English or at the very best spoke broken English. I had no idea that day that I was being introduced to one of the best players of all time and he was just 19 at the time. Surreal. It feels like you grew up with Dirk. We all essentially did. We saw him have to shed the “soft” label. We saw him become a leader. We saw him become a NBA champion. It’s easier to see Dirk retire now then it would’ve a few years ago. It was overdue but it’s emotional remember all the great memories Dirk and the Big 3 gave us. Appreciate him guys.....he’s the last of a dying breed.

Just a heads up, Mark Followill made his own tribute video to Dirk that really struck a chord with me. I encourage everyone to take a few minutes to watch that. I think Mark did a good job putting to words what many of else probably feel right about now.

Agree. My wife and I were fortunate enough to attend the 2011 Finals Game 6 in Miami when the Mavs won the title. We waited outside the AA Arena for an hour + with about 60 or so other Mavs fans after the game hoping to get a glimpse of the team. The entire team came out on the way to the bus, and Cuban was carrying the trophy. Dirk and Mark and many of the other players came by and greeted us, shook hands and took time for some quick photos. I actually got to give the championship trophy a couple of nice little pats. :-D It was so cool and so surreal. I'll never forget Deshawn Stevenson leaving the arena and walking right through the group of Mav fans and just walking off. LOL I was like... WTH? That's Deshawn Stevenson! That Game 6, the ceremony, and seeing the team afterward with such few people is my number 1 sports memory of all time!

It's a little hard to believe that was around 8 years ago. :-( I'm going to miss the Big German, but I'm so very happy for him, both professionally and personally. Has any player been given a more fitting tribute and thank you in his last home game? I can't think of a single one. He may be old by NBA standards, but he's still a pretty young guy, and he's got a family and young kids to enjoy watching grow up. I couldn't be any happier for him. Enjoy the next chapter of your life Dirk! You'll forever by my #1 sports hero. :-D

I haven't posted much in here since 2011.

But essentially this is where I am at. I am 35 years old now, and spent all of my childhood and teen years rooting for one athlete above every other one, above every other team, above every other sport. Wishing to see Dirk win a ring became everything in my sports fandom.

Him retiring right now is... yeah, just an incredible hole that I don't think will ever be filled again.

I wish my dad could have been around to see the tribute... His favorite players... Bird and Dirk (followed closely by Nash and Robert Parrish). He died just prior to the Mavs 2011 Championship... It would have been amazing for him to see Bird there talking about Dirk... Bird just doesn't do that kind of thing. It really shows you how much Dirk means to the basketball world. And we were fortunate enough to see it night in and night out as Mavs fans..

Well...I always say "Love ya Dirk!" and I really meant that. Today is a bittersweet day. I feel like a proud parent watching their son graduate from school. He's graduating from the NBA to the next phase of his life. What that is, we don't know. I'm sure it won't replace what we've had for the last 21 years.

I moved to Dallas back in 1997 and Dirk arrived in 1998. I grew up with him. I know Dallas is Cowboys country but the Mavs have always been my number one. Today I vacillate between smiles and tears. All the memories of the last 21 years of my life flash before my eyes. Going to the AAC and even going to Love Field to greet the guys at the airport after beating the Spurs.

I don't have enough words to describe how much 41 means to me. I'm still in a bit of denial but I'm probably gonna cry the rest of the summer. LOL

Love ya Dirk. Farewell friend.

Dont know....it still bothers me that it was his ankle making the decision and not his head.

Without the ankle...coming back with Luka, KP and a FA signing, going back to the playoffs...that would have been a great last season

I was lucky enough to have season tickets from 1982 to 86, and from '92 through 2011. I saw most of Dirk's great moments. One of the coolest was when he came up to me at the fence at Love Field when they got home from Miami. He said a few words to my camera, and I got one of my most precious photos.

@AndrewDBailey: Dirk Nowitzki made his NBA debut in 1998.

Before that, a total of 40 7-footers had hit a 3P. The combined total for 3P from those 40 players was 507.

Dirk Nowitzki made 1,982 3P in his career.
