“The Assyrian came down like the wolf on the fold; And his cohorts were gleaming in purple and gold; And the sheen of their spears was like stars on the sea; When the blue wave rolls nightly on deep Galilee.”

Women at the time of Troy wore only a single garment. Which is to say, no underclothing. And did not bathe with any frequency.

According to Herodotus, women of Sarmatia in the 5th century BC were descended from Amazons, reared on horseback from birth, and could not marry until they had killed a man in battle...

The Persians deployed so many bowmen at Thermoplyae that it was said their arrows could blot out the sun.

To which a Spartan commander: All the better, then we will be fighting in the shade.

"The bleaker the circumstances, the more imperturbable a Spartan was trained to be: and Leonidas, perfectly aware that sang-froid was the best morale-booster that he could offer his wavering allies, naturally looked to his own. They did not disappoint. When the barbarians fired their arrows through the air as to blot out the sun. The Spartans who were in the habit of dismissing arrows as mere spindles, womanish and cowardly, affected to be colossally unfazed. 'What excellent news," one of them drawled. "If the Mede hides the sun, then so much the better for us - we can fight our battle in the shade... "
- Tom Holland, Persian Fire

The historical Troy, aka Troy VIIa. Specified as having fallen between 1240 and 1230 BC. Bones of prototypal Hectors lie in the roadways, and there is evidence of step-by-step destruction.

After which the site was entirely abandoned for centuries.

In fact only two Spartans survived Thermopylae. One was killed in battle elsewhere. The other hanged himself in disgrace.

The fella who died in battle elsewhere was pretty legendary. The Spartan Aristodemus was one of the hand-picked 300 who accompanied Leonidas to Thermopylae, but along with one other hoplite, he contracted a severe eye infection and they were both ordered by Leonidas to recuperate back at camp. On the morning of the Spartan's last stand (on the third day) the unnamed other fella with the eye infection rushed to the pass and was killed, but Aristodemus followed his kings orders and survived the battle to return home with some surviving camp followers...

Of course, upon returning to the Pelopennesus he was branded a coward and a 'trembler' and he was forced to wear humiliating patches upon his previously proud, scarlet Spartan cloak, and was cursed as being one of the only two of the 300 to survive Thermopylae (the other fella who survived from the 300 was a messenger who hanged himself to escape the ignominy). However, that wasn't the end of the story for the 'trembler' Aristodemus, because less than a year after the death of his King, Aristodemus marched yet again to war, and broke rank from his comrades to throw himself alone into the front-line of the Persians at Plataea and dispatched almost thirty of them on his own in a raging, berserk, blood-fury before being killed himself, and thus very visibly redeemed his honor in the eyes of both his fellow Spartans, and ultimately, of history as well...

There were actually around 7000 Greeks at Thermopylae.

Yeah, but only 300 Spartans, not counting the 300 helots and camp followers that Herodotus cites...

Great. The guy managed an attack with one arm and one leg missing. I guess this must be the MVP of the B.C. season.

This morning as I swallowed a pill, my boss asked me what I was taking.

I told him it was a Claritin.

He asked me if I was taking it for "my hair".

"My hair?? No, its for allergies."

"Oh, well that's a major component of your hair and skin."

"Claritin??

"Yeah, Claritin."

"Ok".

Just another typical conversation with the boss....

There is no point at me being in the office this week.

NO POINT AT ALL.

I can't even test some apps I'm changing because it requires live production data from a warehouse system that isn't doing anything this week. I am so bored.

Frying big heaps of floured and seasoned chicken parts in delicious bacon grease is the proper way of making chicken, is what I would say...

I'm still losing wait, but keep on thinking about whether to play football at Martin High School or not. This would be my senior year and only chance. Plus, if my team makes it to state, the game will be played in Houston this year. That would be freaking amazing (but I think it is a pipe dream right now).

Ever since my friend collapsed on the field my freshman year (going into sophomore year) I haven't really been enthused about playing football. I played in 7th, 8th, and 9th grade.

I don't know, some advice from you guys would be nice.

Martin will lose to the Lamer Vikings or the Arlington Colts quicker than you can say blueberry pancakes. Sam Houston will be a bear as well. Look, there is no disgrace in bowing out when you are beat. You are clearly beat right now, and any effort you give would be spread out among these other Arlington schools like so much wheat among the chaff.

Or...you could get your dick out of your ass, and stop polling an online forum about whether you should be a man or not, and step up in the program like the other guys your age who aren't gay are stepping up. You wanna be a man, do what guys your age do. And don't look for reasons not to do it...

The best advice I can give to you is to say what the Nike commercials have been saying since 1987: Just Do It

You won't be a senior in high school ever again, so if you love playing football, play it now, while you can...

Thanks to both of you. I would give out rep, but I need to spread it around first.

I'm working out as hard as I can at a local high school right now in Houston (here for the summer). Fuck it, I'm playing. August 11th is when practice starts. Last year in high school. The loss of Jeremi Mathis hurts us (he graduated this year and was our best player). The biggest complaint from people is the O-Line. I think I could help there.

We'll see.
