Winston Cup is awesome. I've seen some of the IRL races and the cars run damn fast, but it's just not my cup of tea. I enjoy the closed wheel guys. Open wheel racing to me is just too predictable.

I guess this poll is a bit biased. A poll done on the internet is not likely to provide a true sampling of the auto racing fan. A bit too hi-tech.

Yet another bit of ignorance. Who is surprised?

Love Formula one racing. But stock car/ touring car really doesn't interest me too much.

OzMavs- I've seen a bit of the Formula One. Not bad racing. I jsut like the bump and grind stock car guys. if the open wheel guys do it they pretty much end up wihtout a tire or in the wall.

Still....it's amazing how fast those open wheels guys go. They can corner like mad too.

Yeah. I know what you're saying Doc.

Its hard to explain the differences between motor sport in different countries. In Australia, touring cars are most popular. Usually, the biggest races are held on street circuits.

Stock cars aren't all that big. Although, they were popular about five years ago. Drag racing is pretty popular still.

But Formula one, because the track is about 500 metres from my front gate, is the most popular.

well, the site says that drag racing scores 25, which makes it a leisure activity, apparently. i personally don't think drag racing is a leisure activity, but whatever.

First of all...interesting site MFFL. But, it misses the mark. It's someone's attempt to define sport and it is an enjoyable read but the following long accepted OLYMPIC SPORTS don't t qualify according to the site:

1. Cycling - so much for the Tour de France and the Olympic cycling events
2. Snow Skiing- again...another Olympic event bites the dust
3. X-country skiing- so many olympic athletes losing their sports. Very sad.
4. Fencing - uh oh.
5. Synchronized swimming- I guess since it's synchronized and not balls out swimming.
6. Triathalon - not a sport? Huh?
7. Bobsledding - aw too bad. I really liked this one too.
8. Snowboarding - aw damn. They just made this an olympic sport too.
9. Shot put - I guess the field events should be cut from competition.
10. Curling - well, hard to argue with this one, but it is an olympic sport.
11. Equestrian - tell the horses it isn't a sport. The olympic committee too.
12. High Jump - another field event bites the dust.
13. Ski Jumping - poor Eddie the Eagle. Now he's just a regular dude. No more athlete status.
14. Speed skating - I think Eric Hyden would disagree. Anton Ohno must be crying in his Wheaties.
15. Luge- Is someone prejudiced vs. winter sports?
16. Figure skating - you have to be kidding me.
17. Table tennis - a longtime olympic sport.
18. Marksmanship - the olympics are fading fast.
19. Polo - I assume they mean the horse-riden kind. Otherwise the water polo guys are going to be pissing in the pool.

That was just the casual perusal of one of their lists. These others are listed and could be argued (some by me some not) I suppose:
1. Rock Climbing - seems to fit a sport to me
2. Bullfighting - tell it to the bull and the south of the border folks. Some of these draw bigger crowds than the Rangers
3. Bowling - skill involved...
4. Dog Sledding - the Iditarod must be shocked
5. Cricket - use some raid....but the English and Indian folks seem to think it is
6. Croquet - goofy dressed geeks need sports too
7. Kayak racing - done this...very tiring....if you use the machine angle to argue vs. auto racing you have to accept this one
8. Skulling - same as above
9. Skateboarding - you decide as I don't watch it
10. Motocross - pretty fun to watch...I think it qualifies
11. Skeet shooting - all kinds of skill involved....
12. Fishing - B.A.S.S. paid Alton Jones more last year than most MLB guys so I guess he doesn't care what you call it.
13. Billiards - fun to watch...won't argue in its favor but it is competition
14. Trampoulining - WTF?
15. Darts - just don't hit the big guy in the butt or a boxing match will break out
16. Arm wrestling - tough call
17. Jai Lai - another tough call...only because it is such a regionalized thing
18. Motorboat Racing - sport. period.
19. Bodybuilding - no opinion
20. Squash - great with brocolli
21. Drag racing - sport.
22. Fox hunting - rich people need to feel athletic too
23. Horse shoes - fun fun fun...but not a sport
24. Crash Derby - same as above
25. Rollerball - ooohhh....check out the movie.

Finally, they list the following arguably accepted sports as Non-sports:
1. Golf - this could be a fun argument
2. 100 m dash - you are kiddig right?
3. Weightlifting - they must not have gotten olmpic tickets and gotten pissed off
4. Diving - again...arguable
5. Thoroughbred Racing - tell it to Seattle Slew
6. Cheerleading - won't call it a sport but those folks are incredibly talented
7. Gymnastics - horse poo. Gymnasitcs is pure sport
8. Badminton - uhhhhh
9. Auto Racing - they blow it again. This is sport.
10. Crew - team sport, got the axe because of the water-phobia of the website
11. Sailing - relaxing sport? Hell no...look at those Americas Cup guys working their collective asses off.
12. Surfing - stoners need sport too
13. Water Skiing - activity? Sport?
14. Wiffleball - why not list Baseketball with the SouthPark guys?
15. Marathon - the original olympic sport
16. Archery - sport of the ages in the highlands and other areas
17. Swimming - idiots

Finally, they list the following as the only sports...very shortsighted:
1. Football - no argument
2. Basketball - the greatest sport
3. Baseball - no argument
4. Soccer - I agree, but this will be another argument
5. Rugby - the badass only need apply
6. Ice Hockey - see above
7. Jousting -WTF? You mean the Sir Lancelot thing?
8. Tennis - the Williams sisters can sleep easy now
9. Wrestling - Rulond Williams is smiling
10. Boxing - this is only here because Mike Tyson threatened to kick their ass. I agree though.
11. Lacrosse - for the polo guys who couldn't find horses.
12. Water Polo - they let in a water sport?
13. Field Hockey - gender equity lives!
14. Volleyball - great sport
15. Team Handball - hookers need sports too. oops....that's not right is it?
16. Karate/Judo - hell yeah! Everybody was Kung Fu fighting!!!
17. Softball - Title IX entry

So let the arguments begin. Don't kill the messenger....it's all in the name of sport.

I don't live ovals.

I like circuits and street circuits more.

Maybe cause I only watch the races in TV.
